INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.

  • Dear Friends, in Keeping with the Nostalgic Themes with Which We
Dear friends, In keeping with the nostalgic themes with which we normally open these Activity Pages, I thought I’d tell you a story about young love – its excitement, its promise, and its almost inevitable woes. It’s a true story, one from my own past. And it begins at Roller City, a roller skating rink located, in those distant days, on Alameda Avenue just west of Federal Boulevard in Denver, Colorado. It was a balmy Friday night when I first spied my Cinderella – a lovely, lithe thing with a cute smile, pink ribbons in her blonde hair, and very “girly” bons bons of matching color hanging on the front of her white roller skates. It might have been love at first sight but certainly by the time we skated hand in hand under the multi-colored lights in a romantic “couples skate,” I was a goner. Indeed, I fell more madly in love than I had at any other time in my whole life. I was 10 years old. I drop in that fact because it proved to be the relevant point in the impending tragedy of unrequited love. For you see, it turned out there was an unbridgeable gap in our ages. I was just getting ready to go into the 4th grade whereas I learned she was going into the 5th grade! Yipes! I had fallen for an older woman! How could I break it to her? And how would I deal with the rejection I knew must follow? I was in a terrible jam and so…and I’m not proud of it…I made up a lie.

  • Introduction
Notes Introduction 1. Although throughout this book, the identification of a Jewish "race" is associ ated with an anti-Semitic impulse, Jewish usage of "racial" terminology indi cates a certain ambivalence. See Harriet D. Lyons and Andrew P. Lyons, "A Race or Not a Race: The Question of Jewish Identity in the Year of the First Universal Races Congress;' in Ethnicity, Identity, and History, ed. Joseph B. Maier and Chaim I. Waxman, 499-518 (New Brunswick: Transaction Books, 1983). Even today, many Jews use the term "the Jewish race" with pride. 2. The Haskalah, or Jewish Enlightenment, which began in late eighteenth century, Germany, was a response to the European Enlightenment. Middle-class Jews, anxious to distance themselves from the ghetto and religious prejudice, sought to modernize Jewish communities by exposing them to secular thought. The Maskilim (the proponents of the Haskalah) believed that Jews were persecuted because they differed from dominant communities in terms of culture, language, education, dress and manners. By modernizing their schools, learning the spo ken language of the country in which they lived, and adapting their manners to those of their neighbors, it was hoped that individual Jews would be treated like any other citizens. 3. Steve Allen, Funny People (New York: Stein and Day, 1981), 11. 4. Most of the women listed here are not discussed further in this book, although I would like to suggest that they could be. Also, this study does not confine itself (at least in its earlier chapters) to comic performance. I present this list self consciously and order it alphabetically as an attempt at organization.

  • The Romantic Trumpet Part Two
110 HISTORIC BRASS SOCIETY JOURNAL THE ROMANTIC TRUMPET PART TWO Edward H. Tarr Continued from Historic Brass Society Journal, volume 5 (1993), pages 213-61. The two-part series is an expansion of an article written for Performance Practice Encyclopedia. We thank Roland Jackson, editor of this forthcoming reference work, for permission to we this material in HBSJ. For a Conclusion to Part One, containinga list oferrata, please see followingthe endnotes for the current installment. Summary of Part One In Part One, the author first attempted to show the various types of trumpets, cornets, and flugelhorns, both natural and chromaticized, that existed before the advent of valves, together with their literature. Before there were valved trumpets, for example, natural trumpets, etc., were made chromatic by the technique of hand-stopping or by being fitted with slides or keys. He then showed how the first valved brass instruments—in particular trumpets, and to a lesser extent, comets—were accepted into musical circles. Introduction to Part Two In Part Two, it is the author's aim to raise the flag on a forgotten figure in brass history— one who was reponsible not only for the development ofboth the Vienna valve and the rotary valve, but also for the creation of the first solo compositions for the newly invented valved trumpet: Josef Kail (1795-1871), the first professor of valved trumpet at the Prague Conservatory (served 1826-1867). For this reason, the central part of this study will be devoted to works hitherto unknown, written for the trumpet (and to a lesser extent the cornet, flugelhom, horn, and trombone) during his time.

  • Collection Highlights
COLLECTION HIGHLIGHTS “LATINOS AND BASEBALL” COLLECTING INITIATIVE Latino baseball players have been interwoven in the fabric of Major League Baseball for years. They've been some of the greatest, well-known names in baseball history. To reflect and celebrate that rich history, the National Museum of American History (“NMAH”) in collaboration with the Smithsonian Latino Center, launched Latinos and Baseball: In the Barrios and the Big Leagues. The multi-year community collecting initiative focuses on the historic role that baseball has played as a social and cultural force within Latino communities across the nation. The project launched a series of collecting events in late February in San Bernardino, California. A second event will be held in Los Angeles on July 17, 2016, and a third will be held in Syracuse, New York, on September 15, 2016. The events are designed to generate interest in the initiative, build on community relationships, record oral histories, and identify objects for possible acquisition by local historical associations as well as for the Smithsonian collections. The collaborative initiative seeks to document stories from across the U.S. and Puerto Rico and plans to collect a number of objects that could include baseball equipment; stadium signs; game memorabilia, such as handmade or mass-produced jerseys and tickets; food vendor signs; home movies; and period photographs. Curators will select objects based on the stories they represent and the insight they provide into the personal, community, and national narratives of the national pastime. “Baseball has played a major role in everyday American life since the 1800s, providing a means of celebrating both national and ethnic identities and building communities,” said John Gray, director of NMAH.
