I presented a section of the third chapter of this dissertation at the Latina/o Studies 25th Anniversary Symposium at the University of Michigan held in October 2009. I presented a draft of the entire third chapter at the Newberry Library Seminar on Borderlands and Latino Studies in April 2011. Chávez. A section of the fourth chapter of this dissertation served as the foundation of the paper I delivered at the Annual Meeting of the American Studies Association in October 2011. Close family and friends supported me in various ways as I worked to finish this project. My parents, Rosendo and Teresa Abreu, bid me farewell each morning and welcomed me home each evening as I commuted from their house in Orlando to the archives in Tampa. They also never asked me, not once, the dreaded question: “So, when are you going to be done?” My aunt, Gilda Abreu, provided me with a place to sleep and sangria to drink during two extended stays in New Jersey to complete research in New York City. The main Soviet installation and the site of Soviet military GHQ is at La Gobernadora hills, near the country's principal naval base of Marie!. Five large tunnels have been constructed in the La Gobernadora area. They are 105 ft. wide -- permitting two - way traffic -- and have reinforced ceilings 30 ft . high. Two of the tunnels penetrate La Gobernadora hills laterally for a distance of 6 miles , according to a Rebel Army lieutenant who personally toured the tunnels during their construction and has defected. Guided missiles are secreted in the tunnels, according to reports from the mili­ tary arm of the Cuban resistance movement. Other sources inside Cuba say that at least one tunnel has been air-conditioned for the storage of nuclear warheads, and that another has been equipped with refrigerating equipment for storing liquid oxygen used for ballis ­ tic missiles. Electrical systems have been installed at the nearby base of Meseta de Anafe, add the latter sources, and are connected with the guided-missile stations at La Gober­ nadora and the Havana military 11 horseshoe 11 {see ''Military 1Horseshoe 1 Around Havana, 11 FCN No.

    Surnames and Migrations: The Barcelona Area (1451-1900)1 Joan Pau Jordà Joana Maria Pujadas-Mora Anna Cabré Spain Abstract Catalan onomastics, and specifically the evolution of surnames, has been conditioned by several demographic, political and social processes that have imparted singular characteristics over the course of centuries. The combination of these factors resulted in a significant number of homonymic surnames, making it impossible to correctly identify their geographical origin based solely on linguistic criteria. As a possible solution to this, this paper proposes the use of the cluster analysis method to introduce a further criterion for their identification and classification. Historical registers of Marriage License Books from the Diocese of Barcelona are the source selected to achieve this goal. These records, which collect information on more than two million surnames, were maintained between 1451 and 1905 in a set of 291 books (Llibres d’Esposalles) kept at the archives of the Barcelona Cathedral. * * * Introduction The study of historical migrations is one of the most difficult demographic phenomena to investigate due to the absence of specific records until recent times. Given this lack, it is necessary to rely on indirect sources and methods that have already shown great potential, such as the analysis of surnames.2 However in the Catalan case – as well as in others – the evolution of onomastics, and specifically the evolution of surnames, has been conditioned by several demographic, political and social factors that have imparted singular characteristics over the course of centuries. The combination of these processes, as explained below, has made it necessary to propose the use of complementary methods to correctly identify the geographical origin of surnames and to complement existing linguistic criteria.

A combination of institutional, legal, intellectual and cultural analysis, the dissertation investigates how citizenship evolved and functioned on the Barcelonese stage. To this end, the thesis is structured into two parts. Part 1 includes four chapters, within which I establish the legal and institutional background of the Barcelonese citizen. Citizenship as a fiscal and individual privilege is contextualised within the negotiations that shaped the limits and prerogatives of monarchical and municipal power from the thirteenth to the late fourteenth centuries.

Cabrera’s text is a hybrid ethnographic book of religion, slave narratives (oral history), and folklore (songs, poetry) that she devoted to a group of Afro-Cubans known as “los Congos de Cuba,” descendants of the Africans who were brought to the Caribbean island of Cuba during the trans-Atlantic Ocean African slave trade from the former Kongo Kingdom, which occupied the present-day southwestern part of Congo-Kinshasa, Congo-Brazzaville, Cabinda, and northern Angola. The Kongo Kingdom had formal contact with Christianity through the Kingdom of Portugal as early as the 1490s.

En 1937 se traslada a Nueva York y trabaja y graba con la orquesta de Cugat. Se atreve con números como Bruca maniguá, coto privado de Miguelito Valdés. Graba y canta también en 1938, con la orquesta de Nilo Menéndez y en ese mismo año, cambiando completamente de formato a dúo con Machito para el Cuarteto Caney.
