Citation information: DOI 10.1109/TKDE.2019.2948607, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON KNOWLEDGE AND DATA ENGINEERING 1 Large-scale Cost-aware Classification Using Feature Computational Dependency Graph Qingzhe Li, Amir Alipour-Fanid, Martin Slawski,Yanfang Ye, Lingfei Wu, Kai Zeng, Liang Zhao Abstract—With the rapid growth of real-time machine learning applications, the process of feature selection and model optimization requires to integrate with the constraints on computational budgets. A specific computational resource in this regard is the time needed for evaluating predictions on test instances. The joint optimization problem of prediction accuracy and prediction-time efficiency draws more and more attention in the data mining and machine learning communities. The runtime cost is dominated by the feature generation process that contains significantly redundant computations across different features that sharing the same computational component in practice. Eliminating such redundancies would obviously reduce the time costs in the feature generation process. Our previous Cost-aware classification using Feature computational dependencies heterogeneous Hypergraph (CAFH) model has achieved excellent performance on the effectiveness. In the big data era, the high dimensionality caused by the heterogeneous data sources leads to the difficulty in fitting the entire hypergraph into the main memory and the high computational cost during the optimization process. Simply partitioning the features into batches cannot give the optimal solution since it will lose some feature dependencies across the batches. -

Schmalenberger ABSTRACT Stylistic Evolution of Jazz Drummer Ed Blackwell: The Cultural Intersection of New Orleans and West Africa David J. Schmalenberger The two primary functions of a jazz drummer are to maintain a consistent pulse and to support the soloists within the musical group. Throughout the twentieth century, jazz drummers have found creative ways to fulfill or challenge these roles. In the case of Bebop, for example, pioneers Kenny Clarke and Max Roach forged a new drumming style in the 1940’s that was markedly more independent technically, as well as more lyrical in both time-keeping and soloing. The stylistic innovations of Clarke and Roach also helped foster a new attitude: the acceptance of drummers as thoughtful, sensitive musical artists. These developments paved the way for the next generation of jazz drummers, one that would further challenge conventional musical roles in the post-Hard Bop era. One of Max Roach’s most faithful disciples was the New Orleans-born drummer Edward Joseph “Boogie” Blackwell (1929-1992). Ed Blackwell’s playing style at the beginning of his career in the late 1940’s was predominantly influenced by Bebop and the drumming vocabulary of Max Roach. -

The musical and spiritual life of Mary Lou Williams (1910 - 1981) came together in her later years in the writing of Mary Lou's Mass. Being both Roman Catholic and a jazz pianist and composer, it was inevitable that Williams would be the first jazz composer to write a setting of the mass. The degree of success resulting from the combination of jazz and the traditional forms of Western art music has always been controversial. Because of Williams's personal faith and aesthetics of music, however, she had little choice but to attempt the union of jazz and liturgical worship. After a biography of Williams, discussed in the context of her musical aesthetics, this thesis investigates the elements of conventional mass settings and oral tradition found in Mary Lou's Mass. -

ABSTRACT Title of Document: KOREAN DANCE AND PANSORI IN D.C.: INTERACTIONS WITH OTHERS, THE BODY, AND COLLECTIVE MEMORY AT A KOREAN PERFORMING ARTS STUDIO Lauren Rebecca Ash-Morgan, M.A., 2009 Directed By: Professor Robert C. Provine School of Music This thesis is the result of seventeen months’ field work as a dance and pansori student at the Washington Korean Dance Company studio. It examines the studio experience, focusing on three levels of interaction. First, I describe participants’ interactions with each other, which create a strong studio community and a women’s “Korean space” at the intersection of culturally hybrid lives. Second, I examine interactions with the physical challenges presented by these arts and explain the satisfaction that these challenges can generate using Csikszentmihalyi’s theory of “optimal experience” or “flow.” Third, I examine interactions with discourse on the meanings and histories of these arts. I suggest that participants can find deeper significance in performing these arts as a result of this discourse, forming intellectual and emotional bonds to imagined people of the past and present. Finally, I explain how all these levels of interaction can foster in the participant an increasingly rich and complex identity. April 3, 2021 OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE MARGIE EVANS, ICONIC AND SOPHISTICATED QUEEN OF THE BLUES, DIES AT 81 Dateline: Shreveport, Louisiana, April 3, 2021 Margie Evans, a legendary, international Blues and Gospel entertainer, songwriter, music producer, actress, music historian, community activist and motivational spokeswoman, who broke barriers for African American female Blues performers with poise, dignity and sophistication, died on March 19, 2021. In addition to her musicianship, Evans is noted as an activist for parity in music education as well as a promoter of the legacy of Blues music. As she often said, “I’ve been around a long time and I’ve really paid my dues.” She was age of eighty-one. A family statement did not reveal the cause of death. The lengthy career of the unsung, effervescent entertainer is chronicled in her first biographical memoir, “Margie Evans: The Classy, Sophisticated Queen of the Blues, due for release on Amazon in two weeks. In all of her endeavors, Evans embodied African American women of courage, faith and wisdom who demanded respect. In each of her acting roles, radio commercials, iconic albums and international tours, she represented complex, decisive women, articulating a profound grace, depth, perseverance and dignity in each of her performances. Marjorie Ann Johnson was born in 1939 in Shreveport, Louisiana, in the United States. She chose to be known as Margie. Raised as a devout Christian, Margie Evans’ early exposure to music was through gospel, inspired by her mother, Mrs. Veva Williams, who taught Latin and piano. After graduating from Grambling College, majoring in elementary education, in 1958, Margie moved to Los Angeles, where she later married her longtime friend and neighbor, Rev. -
