WALK YOUR PATH www.TIANNIABARNES.com www.MAGRITTESHOES.com IG @tianniabarnes FB /TianniaBarnes [email protected] EDITOR’S NOTE In the days of Insta-everything it is no surprise to see success be measured through social status—media that is. With modern day supermodels like GIGI HADID, KENDALL JENNER and CARA DELEVINGNE taking control of our news feeds, we can’t help but wonder how the INSTAGIRLS came about. #GIRLSQUAD Since the 40s, we’ve been used to the idea of a supermodel. BETTINA GRAZIANI ruled fashion for two decades creating the token lifestyle we refer to today as modelesque. Earning exorbitant modeling fee’s of $1,300 an hour and wedding international playboy ALY KHAN, she set the bar of what to expect going forward. Soon after, young girls would be introduced to the largest fashion icon to date— BARBIE, followed by TWIGGY in the 60s, to our first COVERGIRL, CHERYL TIEGS in the 70s. From that point on we became familiar with the household names of Linda, Naomi, Christy, Cindy, Tatjana and Claudia. A clan of glamazon women, who partied together, did business together and more importantly, didn’t get out of bed for less than $10,000. In 2000, we were re-introduced to a new powerful and glamorous athletic confidence that would rewrite the prerequisites of modeling—also known as GISELE BÜNDCHEN, who according to FORBES became the first billionaire supermodel. Not only was she fresh, she also quickly learned that in order to stay in the game you would need to rewrite the rules. And she did… But how does one keep up, let alone compete? You don’t. You recreate the status quo and move forward with what is before you. For modern day models, it’s about being relevant and not pigeon holed to being JUST a model. We no longer look for the impossible build with goddess features…to the time where the fashion world felt like an impenetrable bubble. Instead, we live in a social world where everything comes in an instant and you automatically see what the world thinks. It’s a social world where fashion, lifestyle and poetic approaches are in bloom. The modern day supermodel, is truly a wonder woman. Proving that as times change we continue to evolve and stay relevant, and if you don’t believe us, check out their IG. #INSTAPIC #FASHION #MODELLIFE #SPRING2017 #ME 14 | thelafashion.com THE LA FASHION MAGAZINE Editor in Chief/Art Director NINA VARGAS THELAFASHION.COM Creative Director ALEJANDRA VALENCIA Layout Design SAVANAHA LAMP Managing Editor TINA MILOSAVLJEVIC Beauty Director ANDY CALERO Beauty Editor MIRA BALEV-JOHNSON COVER GIGI HADID Photographed by DOUGLAS BASSETT SPRING 2017 for LAFM at ELIE SAAB PARIS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH EDITORS LISA ODIGIE, MIRA BALEV-JOHNSON, CONTENTS PETER CURTI, PIERINA MEDINA VIVID COLORS The Return of the Supermodel COOKING FRESH FLAVOR SENSUAL & UNCENSORED CONTRIBUTING DESTINEE DUBOSE, GABRIELLA LAYNE, 06 Featuring: AVA CAPRA 68 GIGI HADID 96 with Chefs SERENA POON 110 An Interview with TRINA EDITORS JEAN RUSSET and CHARLES CHEN EDITOR’S NOTE FASHION IN BLOOM URBN MVMNT PHOTOGRAPHER SUZANNE STRONG 14 78 Featuring ALEXXIS CARDENAS WATERCOLOR FLORALE 114 Featuring AUDREY ALLEN and 100 Featuring KATY JOHNSON and KRISLIAN RODRIGUEZ CONTRIBUTING PIERRE BROWN, THE BIGGEST ICELINK GERALDINE MORENO PHOTOGRAPHERS REBECCA PEREZ 18 PARTNERSHIP IN FASHION 86 The Finer Things in Life 12 #GOALDIGGERS LAFM & FNL NETWORK THE TRIPLE THREAT 124 TO WATCH IN 2017 ADVERTISING BONNIE ZAVALA, MEGAN AVERBURCH A Model’s Fairy Tale Wedding 108 Fashion, Music & Beauty BARBIE 88 CHRISTINA GALIOTO with CC CLARKE STYLE SCOPES BUSINESS ALLYHA PHILLIPS, KAREN JOHNSON 20 The Original Supermodel 142 Spring Tips for your Sign CREATIVE SERVICES HOLLY PHELPS VINTAGE BARBIE 22 Featuring CASEY CLARE, DIGITAL AD STRATEGY & BENJAMIN LEVI COHEN, ANNA ASIA and SVETLANA IVANOVA PLANNING TINA MILOSAVLJEVIC WHAT TO WEAR SPECIAL THANKS JOSEPH CAVALLO 30 THIS SPRING With Style Expert RAYNE PARVIS APPRECIATION TO EVETTE DE CARLO, ROSALINA LYDSTER INSTAGRAM Printed in the USA by JOSTENS 32 CHANGES FASHION MARKETING FOR GOOD SPRING 2017 ISSUE ©2017 by The LA Fashion Magazine Multimedia. One financial player who took a look at American Apparel said there’s plenty of opportunity to improve the business. Inventories, for instance, could turn much quicker. “Everyone sees the quality of the brand,” said the source, who described Charney was “a very, very tal- ented merchant,” but said he had become a one-man band, personally overseeing the company’s 249 stores. “American Apparel, as a brand, should be big abroad,” the source said, noting it could do that and maintain it’s U.S.-based production philosophy. But how the brand develops from here depends on who’s in the driver’s seat. Summer The company scrambled over the weekend to set up a stockholder rights plan, or poison pill, to prevent ousted Charney from regaining control of the firm by accumulating more stock.

But the IPO comes at a time of instabil- ity in the European economy, growing uncertainty Eyes over the strength of the U.S. recovery, a slowdown in growth in China and Brazil and a few lackluster IPOs in recent months, including Facebook.
