Apuleius1 ∵ These two passages from two authors, one writing in Greek, the other in Latin, set the stage of this book on Mystery cults in Visual Representation in Graeco-Roman Antiquity. In this introductory chapter we begin with a broad and problematiz- ing overview of mystery cults, stressing the original features of “mysteries” in the Graeco-Roman world – as is to be expected in this collection, and as is necessary when dealing with this complex phenomenon. Thereafter we will address our specific question: the visual language surrounding the mysteries.     1 The following information has been supplied by the Greek Aliens Bureau: It is obligatory for all EU nationals to apply for a “Registration Certificate” (Veveosi Engrafis - Βεβαίωση Εγγραφής) after they have spent 3 months in Greece (Directive 2004/38/EC).This requirement also applies to UK nationals during the transition period. This certificate is open- dated. You only need to renew it if your circumstances change e.g. if you had registered as unemployed and you have now found employment. Below we outline some of the required documents for the most common cases. Please refer to the local Police Authorities for information on the regulations for freelancers, domestic employment and students. You should submit your application and required documents at your local Aliens Police (Tmima Allodapon – Τμήμα Αλλοδαπών, for addresses, contact telephone and opening hours see end); if you live outside Athens go to the local police station closest to your residence. In all cases, original documents and photocopies are required. You should approach the Greek Authorities for detailed information on the documents required or further clarification. Please note that some authorities work by appointment and will request that you book an appointment in advance. Required documents in the case of a working person: 1. Valid passport. 2. Two (2) photos. 3. Applicant’s proof of address [a document containing both the applicant’s name and address e.g. photocopy of the house lease, public utility bill (DEH, OTE, EYDAP) or statement from Tax Office (Tax Return)]. Typical example of this is the northeastern side of Parnassos National Park, which is traversed by the Tithorea’s trail, at the “Aesthetic forest of Tithorea, near the village of Tithorea. The purpose of the present research is to highlight the specific characteristics of Tithorea’s trail concerning biodiversity, landscape, geomorphology, history and culture, as well as to offer proposals about its management in the protected area of Parnassos National Park. The management and promotion of Tithorea’s trail could become a model for alternative forms of tourism in mountainous areas and it will help to integrate the protected area in the wider ecological, economic and social environment for the sustainable development of the region.

From this information management system there are proposed certain public works that are grouped in two categories, i.e. works that are needed for the entire Attica district and have a general character for the whole region (1 st category works) and then, works that are specifically needed for every particular and individual municipality (2 nd category works).     Ceramic Production and Exchange in the Late Mycenaean Saronic Gulf William D. Gilstrap A Thesis Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Archaeology University of Sheffield February 2015 Abstract This thesis examines the production, exchange and consumption of pottery around the Saronic Gulf, Greece, during Late Mycenaean period, specifically Late Helladic IIIB1 to Late Helladic IIIC Phase 1, roughly 1300-1130 BC. While the focus of many studies of Mycenaean political economy has fallen on Messinia and the Argolid, the choice of the Saronic Gulf offers the chance to examine ceramic crafting, movement and use in an area which hosts no accepted ‘palatial’ centres. It aims to examine the role of pottery in everyday social and economic transaction, taking a ‘bottom-up’ approach to shedding light on Mycenaean society and economy. Pottery from a wide range of sites has been studied: urban centres such as Athens; harbours at Kanakia on Salamis and Kalamianos in coastal Corinthia; small settlements of Stiri in Corinthia, Myti Kommeni on Dokos and Lazarides on Aegina; sanctuary sites of Eleusis and Ayios Konstantinos, Methana; and finally the settlement and pottery production site of Kontopigado, Alimos near the Attic coast. Based on typological and macroscopic fabric studies, a large number of samples have been chosen for examination by an integrated programme of petrographic, chemical (by neutron activation analysis) and microstructural analysis (by scanning electron microscopy), in order to group and characterise to pottery according to composition, to reconstruct key aspects of ceramic manufacture and, where possible, to suggest the area or location of their production.
