These poorly studied projections arise as extensions either of external spiral cords or of interspaces between cords. This paper describes taxonomic, phylogenetic, architectural and func- tional aspects of serrations. Cord-associated serrations occur in cerithiids, strombids, the personid Distorsio anus, ocenebrine muricids and some cancellariids. Interspace-associated serrations are phylo- genetically much more widespread, and occur in at least 16 family-level groups. The nature of serration may be taxonomically informative in some fissurellids, littorinids, strombids and costellariids, among other groups. Serrated outer lips occur only in gastropods in which the apex points more backward than upward, but the presence of serrations is not a necessary byproduct of the formation of spiral sculp- tural elements. -

By hydrolyzing biologically active peptides in tissues and biological fluids, they are involved in the control of many physiological processes. They became established targets for new therapeutic agents in cancer, but also in parasitic diseases like malaria. Marine organisms are promising sources for biomolecules but few examples of neutral aminopeptidase inhibitors are described. The goal of this work was to search in Cuban marine invertebrates, for inhibitory activities of neutral aminopeptidases of biomedical relevance, belonging to the M1 and M17 metallopeptidase families. The screening of inhibitory activities was performed using aqueous crude extracts and their 2.5 % TCA treatments. The treatments with 2.5 % TCA increased the recovery of inhibitory activities versus all enzymes tested and from all of marine species. -

Abstract: Three hundred and eighty-four gastropod species from the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica are report- ed. Eight species are new records for Costa Rica: Cyclostrema tortuganum, Rissoina c.f. fenestrata, Vanikoro oxychone, Epitonium c.f. denticulatum, Latirus infundibulum, Hastula salleana, Daphnella lymneiformis and Tenaturris c.f. inepta. Thirteen species are found on the Caribbean and Pacific coasts of Costa Rica: Tegula fas- ciata, Cymatium nicobaricum, Anachis lyrata, Costoanachis varia, Mitrella ocellata, Agaronia testacea, Hastula cinerea, Architectonica nobilis, Dolabrifera dolabrifera, Stylocheilus striatus, Cavolinia longirostris, Phidiana lascrucensis and Spurilla neapolitana. In comparison with a recent report of the Caribbean and west- ern Atlantic gastropods of Colombia, the Costarican fauna hardly presents 35.8% of those species. Similarly, in comparison with a work from Panama, the quantity of species shared between Costa Rica and its nearby coun- try is 48.2%. The number of species reported here is probably an underestimation because few micromolluscs have been studied and no samples have been collected in deep waters nor in the north part of the coast. The beaded periwinkle Cenchritis muricatus, previously known as Tectarius muricatus, is a sea snail species that belongs to the family Littorinidae (GBIF.org, 2011). They have a single shell that is asymmetrically coiled around an anterior-posterior axis; the shell at the apex (tip) of the spire is the oldest, with additional whorls added as the snail grows (De Victor and Crowe, 2010). The shell is a cream colour, with pale pink at the top, and has six to seven whorls with its distinctive bumps or beads which identify this species (Fig. 1). The size of the shell is usually about 10-12mm in the adult stage (Wikipedia, 2014). UWI The Online Guide to the Animals of Trinidad and Tobago Ecology DISTRIBUTION. It resides mainly in the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and the Lesser Antilles (Fig. 2), including Trinidad and Tobago (Wikipedia, 2014). HABITAT AND ACTIVITY. The numbers of C. muricatus were examined in the Bahamas during July-August 1995 and June 1999 (Emson et al., 2002), just after a hurricane had swept over this country in 1995. C. muricatus were found from lowest tide mark, but the highest densities were found above the high tide mark. They were inactive during daylight hours and on nights with little or no rain or humidity, especially for those that were not close to the water’s edge (Fig.
