Peter and Paul, must be numbered without doubt among the greatest events of the Church. In fact it was the largest in the number of Fathers who came to the seat of Peter from every part of the world, even from those places where the hierarchy has been very recently established. It was the richest because of the questions which for four sessions have been discussed carefully and profoundly. And last of all it was the most opportune, because, bearing in mind the necessities of the present day, above all it sought to meet the pastoral needs and, nourishing the flame of charity, it has made a great effort to reach not only the Christians still separated from communion with the Holy See, but also the whole human family. At last all which regards the holy ecumenical council has, with the help of God, been accomplished and all the constitutions, decrees, declarations and votes have been approved by the deliberation of the synod and promulgated by us. Therefore we decided to close for all intents and purposes, with our apostolic authority, this same ecumenical council called by our predecessor, Pope John XXIII, which opened October 11, 1962, and which was continued by us after his death.

The Apostolic See has always ensured that the canons forbidding the marriages of Catholics with heretics have been observed religiously. Occasionally such marriages have been tolerated in order to avoid more serious scandals. But, even then, the Roman Pontiffs saw to it that the faithful were taught how deformed these marriages are and what spiritual dangers they present. A Catholic man or woman would be guilty of a great crime if he presumed to violate the canonical sanctions in this matter. And if the Roman Pontiffs themselves very reluctantly relaxed this same canonical prohibition in some serious cases, they always added to their dispensation a formal condition: that the Catholic party must not be perverted, but rather must make every effort to withdraw the non-Catholic party from error and that the offspring of both sexes must be educated entirely in the Catholic religion. Mixed Marriages 2. Therefore, guided by the example of Our predecessors, We are grieved to hear reports from your dioceses which indicate that some of the people committed to your care freely encourage mixed marriages. For the same reason almost unknown are portrait miniatures in such carrier. Cardinals, from around the world, get together to select one of their number to be the next pope. Before that happens, though, a series of rituals take place inside the Vatican. After a pope dies, and is officially declared "dead" by a doctor, the Cardinal Camerlengo (that is, the chamberlain) becomes Church administrator until a new pope is selected. The Camerlengo resides in the Vatican palace while performing all of his duties. One of his duties is to personally confirm that the pope has, indeed, passed away. All of the pope’s personal belongings are removed from his apartment and the place is taped and sealed with wax.

This concept brought about the birth of the Crusades, and stirred up many a king and emperor, in obeisance ro the papacy's aims, ro take up arms against the Moslem infidels who occupied and held the Holy Land. A SWORD AND A HELMET Moved by feelings of gratitude, the Supreme Pontiffs naturally sensed the obligation to recompense all those who had distinguished themselves in the implacable and bloody struggles on the frontiers of Christianity and also those who, within their countries, had contributed to the triumph of the Catholic faith. Among such rewards, one may mention the insignia ofthe 'Tuck and Casque' solemnly blessed by the Pope, which had at one and the same time a symboliC value and the repute to ensure victory ro the soldiers of the Holy Cross. The Tuck was asilver gilt sword, about five feet long. The Casque was a helmet of purple velvet embroidered with gold and adorned with the dove of the Holy Ghost in pearls.
