Faith Voices Letter
In Support Of Keeping Houses Of Worship Nonpartisan August 16, 2017 Dear Senator: As a leader in my religious community, I am strongly opposed to any effort to repeal or weaken current law that protects houses of worship from becoming centers of partisan politics. Changing the law would threaten the integrity and independence of houses of worship. We must not allow our sacred spaces to be transformed into spaces used to endorse or oppose political candidates. Faith leaders are called to speak truth to power, and we cannot do so if we are merely cogs in partisan political machines. The prophetic role of faith communities necessitates that we retain our independent voice. Current law respects this independence and strikes the right balance: houses of worship that enjoy favored tax-exempt status may engage in advocacy to address moral and political issues, but they cannot tell people who to vote for or against. Nothing in current law, however, prohibits me from endorsing or opposing political candidates in my own personal capacity. Changing the law to repeal or weaken the “Johnson Amendment” – the section of the tax code that prevents tax-exempt nonprofit organizations from endorsing or opposing candidates – would harm houses of worship, which are not identified or divided by partisan lines. Particularly in today’s political climate, engaging in partisan politics and issuing endorsements would be highly divisive and have a detrimental impact on congregational unity and civil discourse. I therefore urge you to oppose any repeal or weakening of the Johnson Amendment, thereby protecting the independence and integrity of houses of worship and other religious organizations in the charitable sector. -

What Is a Capuchin Friar? What Do They Do? Who Are They?
what is a capuchin friar? what do they do? who are they? an introduction to the Exactly 257 years ago before anyone knew Capuchin Friars about capuchin monkeys (so named in 1758), there were Capuchin friars. It was more than 400 years after Capuchin friars came into existence in 1528 that anyone tasted a cup of cappuccino (first served in 1948). As for friar’s, no, they aren’t fryers, but some of them do prefer theirs fried, rather than baked or grilled. The ‘hood’? It’s all in the name. The brotherhood is found in all kinds of neighbourhoods, hoods and all. Even if you have known Capuchin friars for a long time, it wouldn’t be surprising if you found them somewhat mysterious. The Catholic Church has many religious Orders and communities of men. So what makes Capuchins different? Aren’t they Franciscans? And how are they different from Diocesan priests? It can all be confusing even for those well versed in Catholic life. Maybe you can recognize a Capuchin because of the curious, medieval clothing he wears, but you might wonder what makes him tick on the inside. Come to think about it, why do they wear that robe? And you might ask why anyone would want to be a Capuchin friar in this day and age? Is there a point to a bunch of men living together? Why don’t they get married like other people? And then there’s the money thing? Like everyone else they need it, but they take a vow of poverty. -

Christiansen Papal Diplomacy Talk V2
Pope Francis and Vatican Diplomacy By Drew Christiansen, S.J. Christ Church—Episcopal, Georgetown, D.C. June 10, 2014 In a new book, Pietro Parollin, the Vatican secretary of state, predicted that we can expect new diplomatic initiatives from Pope Francis. The interreligious prayer service this past weekend in the Vatican gardens is an example of the Pope’s personal diplomacy as was the Day of Prayer for Peace last year in advance of the projected US bombing of Syrian chemical weapon sites. But Francis has also opted for a more forthright use of Vatican diplomacy, sending off Vatican diplomats at the time of the chemical weapons crisis and to last February’s Geneva conference on Syria. The collaboration with the Church of England on anti-trafficking programs is another example of his activist policy. In naming Parollin as secretary of state, the Holy Father also chose a man able to fulfill his aspirations for Vatican diplomacy. Cardinal Parollin is a modest man, a good listener, an effective negotiator and a Quiet but decisive policymaker. He made progress in opening relations with Vietnam, prepared the ground for an opening with China, and worked less successfully to conclude long-running negotiations with Israel. Pope Francis has also let it be known that the first step in the restructuring of the Roman Curia will be to focus the Secretariat of State on diplomatic affairs. That focus will not only be on symbolic religious events, though they have a role on which I will say something at the end, but also on more energetic diplomacy in the usual fora aimed at pragmatic results. -

PRESENTATION of the COMMUNIQUÉS of the GENERAL CHAPTER 1. from January
[Translated from Original Spanish] Thy Kingdom Come! PRESENTATION OF THE COMMUNIQUÉS OF THE GENERAL CHAPTER 1. From January 8th through February 25th, 2014, the Extraordinary General Chapter of the Legion of Christ took place in Rome. His Eminence, Cardinal Velasio De Paolis, CS, and his two counselors, Fr. Gianfranco Ghirlanda, SJ, and Fr. Agostino Montan, CSI, presided. Sixty- one chapter fathers participated, 19 ex officio and 42 elected by the nine territories of the congregation and the centers of Rome. 2. This Extraordinary General Chapter marks the end of the journey of in-depth revision that the congregation has travelled since the apostolic visitation, which took place during 2009- 2010, and the naming of a Pontifical Delegate in the summer of 2010. Our principal tasks in the Chapter, as Pope Benedict XVI1 indicated and as Pope Francis confirmed2, were to revise the Constitutions and to elect a new central government for the congregation. 3. In the first days, in light of the reports that the Pontifical Delegate and the pro-General Director submitted, we focused on analyzing the life of the Congregation since the ordinary General Chapter that took place in 2005. One of the outcomes of the intense exchange of ideas that took place in those days was the communiqué that the Chapter approved on January 20th, 2014, about the journey of renewal of the Congregation. This same day, the elections of the new central government took place. Once the election had been confirmed and the Holy See made the two nominations that it had reserved to itself, the elections of Fr. -
