If you look at the final credits, which nobody reads except for insiders, then you are surprised to see how many colleagues you had who took care of all the details. Everyone says, ‘I made the film’ and doesn’t realize that in the case of a success all branches of film making contributed to it. The director, of course, has everything under control. —Robert Siodmak, November 1971 A book on Robert Siodmak needs an introduction. Although he worked ten years in Hollywood, 1941 to 1951, and made 23 movies, many of them widely popular thrillers and crime melo- dramas, which critics today regard as classics of film noir, his name never became etched into the collective consciousness. -

A: I wanted to present a group of children on whom absolute values are being imposed. What I was trying to say was that if someone adopts an absolute principle, when it becomes absolute then it becomes inhuman. The original idea was a children’s choir, who want to make absolute principles concrete, and those who do not live up to them. Of course, this is also a period piece: we looked at photos of the period before World War I to determine costumes, sets, even haircuts. I wanted to describe the atmosphere of the eve of world war. There are countless films that deal with the Nazi period, but not the pre-period and pre-conditions, which is why I wanted to make this film. -

HUMANITIES INSTITUTE Burak Sevingen, MA The Testament of Dr. Mabuse 1933 Fritz Lang (1890-1976) Contents Overview Story Themes Characters Character Analysis (Dr. Mabuse – Professor Baum) OVERVIEW Following his institutionalization at the end of Dr. Mabuse the Gambler (1922), the titular character spends part of the following decade drawing endless pages of zeros. They would have a name for that— ‗cipheritis‘ or ‗zero stroke‘ was an alleged psychological condition characterized by compulsively writing rows of ciphers in hyperinflation-ridden Weimar Germany.1 Mabuse‘s attack on the German currency was thwarted—he was printing counterfeit bills in order to fuel inflation—and the finale of the Fritz Lang‘s silent film had left him defeated. During a ferocious showdown with the security forces of the state, his stronghold was besieged and followers were killed or arrested. Ultimately, Mabuse would retreat to the cellar that housed the forgery, where he would get entrapped and unhinged. He was mute and unresponsive when captured and was subsequently placed in a mental asylum. Dr. Mabuse Returns. Back in his heyday, operating behind the façade of a psychiatric practice, Mabuse would ensnare wealthy individuals thanks to his expertise in hypnotism and mind control. Always craving for more power, he would also organize sophisticated con schemes to exploit the weaknesses of the financial system and wreak havoc. The malevolent doctor returns with the 1933 sequel The Testament of Dr. Mabuse in a semi-comatose state—hardly the spectacular comeback the viewer would expect from the domineering villain. His endless pages of scribbling at the mental hospital had eventually given way to words and meaningful sentences. -

The last one had its protagonist forsake his love interest in favor of a hero of the Czech resistance—which also happened to be the subject of Fritz Lang‘s Hangmen Also Die! It was inspired by Czech resistance fighters‘ assassination attempt of Reinhard Heydrich that had left the Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia wounded. Next day, on 27th May 1942, Lang and co-writer Berthold Brecht conceived of a film loosely based on the event1. Shooting would begin not long after Heydrich‘s death in early June as a result of complications from his wounds. Reinhard Heydrich. Heydrich‘s appointment as Reichsprotektor in 1941 had made him the military dictator of Czechoslovakia. As the head of the major security services in the entire Reich, he was Germany‘s top policeman and ranked second to Heinrich Himmler in the SS. His resume included significant contributions to the planning and execution of the Night of the Long Knives in 1934 against the leadership of the SA stormtroopers, the Kristallnacht pogrom against German Jews in 1938 and organizing the false flag provocations on the Polish border in 1939 that gave Germany a pretext for attacking that country. As the architect of the final solution, Heydrich was the founder of the Einzatzgruppen murder squads that followed German armies and the network of extermination camps in the occupied territories. -
