Scholars have failed to assess cinematic achievements or the potential of adaptations as interpretive tools. This study will be the first to gauge the success of the five films attempting to recreate and inter pret Crane's vision. I gratefully acknowledge the benefic criticism of Dr. Gordon Weaver, Dr. Jeffrey Walker, and Dr. William Rugg. Each scholar has provided thoughtful direction in content, organization, and style. INVENTORY TO ARCHIVAL BOXES IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING, AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by MBRS Staff (Last Update December 2017) Introduction The following is an inventory of film and television related paper and manuscript materials held by the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. Our collection of paper materials includes continuities, scripts, tie-in-books, scrapbooks, press releases, newsreel summaries, publicity notebooks, press books, lobby cards, theater programs, production notes, and much more. These items have been acquired through copyright deposit, purchased, or gifted to the division. How to Use this Inventory The inventory is organized by box number with each letter representing a specific box type. The majority of the boxes listed include content information. Please note that over the years, the content of the boxes has been described in different ways and are not consistent. The “card” column used to refer to a set of card catalogs that documented our holdings of particular paper materials: press book, posters, continuity, reviews, and other. The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database. Boxes indicating “MAVIS” in the last column have catalog records within the new database. To locate material, use the CTRL-F function to search the document by keyword, title, or format. Paper and manuscript materials are also listed in the MAVIS database. This database is only accessible on-site in the Moving Image Research Center. Legs, shouts. The scrape and snap of Keds on loose alley pebbles seems to catapult their voices high into the moist March air blue above the wires. Rabbit Angstrom, coming up the alley in a business suit, stops and watches, though he's twenty-six and six three. So tall, he seems an unlikely rabbit, but the breadth of white face, the pallor of his blue irises, and a nervous flutter under his brief nose as he stabs a cigarette into his mouth partially explain the nickname, which was given to him when he too was a boy. He stands there thinking, the kids keep coming, they keep crowding you up. His standing there makes the real boys feel strange. Eyeballs slide. They're doing this for themselves, not as a show for some adult walking around town in a double-breasted cocoa suit. It seems funny to them, an adult walking up the alley at all. Where's his car? The cigarette makes it more sinister still. Is this one of those going to offer them cigarettes or money to go out in back of the ice plant with him? They've heard of such things but are not too frightened; there are six of them and one of him. The ball, rocketing off the crotch of the rim, leaps over the heads of the six and lands at the feet of the one. -

The Mirrors of Naturalism: Stephen Crane’s Pragmatic Determinism Anthony Manganaro A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2017 Reading Committee: Robert Abrams, chair Monika Kaup Mark Patterson Program Authorized to Offer Degree: English © 2017 Anthony Manganaro University of Washington Abstract The Mirrors of Naturalism: Stephen Crane’s Pragmatic Determinism Anthony Manganaro Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Robert Abrams English My dissertation contributes to current scholarship on nineteenth-century American naturalism by arguing that the emergent theories of determinism and pragmatism were antithetical to, and yet dependent upon, one another. On the one hand, Stephen Crane’s fiction reveals determinism’s heavy weight upon the naturalist genre (the sense that humans cannot affect their worlds), yet unlike Frank Norris or Jack London, for instance, Crane innovatively employs pragmatic elements that work against the very deterministic frameworks that structure his stories. By tracing the dialectic between these theories, I demonstrate how Crane’s fiction not only reveals the destructive relationship between nature and humanity but also, in his pragmatic suspicion of static concepts, the failure of language to accurately interpret the world of the fin de siècle. My lens provides for more complex interpretations of Crane in addition to Theodore Dreiser in ways that highlight how the deterministic yet pluralistic character of naturalism serves -

Contact: [email protected] <em>Yellow Sky</em> (Fox Home Entertainment, 5.23.2006) In the age of Chris Columbus and Brett Ratner, it may be hard to believe that Hollywood once consistently turned out smoothly professional films. In the forties, even routine assignments were handled with great care by studio directors, craftsmen who took their jobs seriously. William Wellman’s 1948 <em>Yellow Sky</em> is a perfect example: interesting story, solid characters, good performances, excellent use of location, skilled cinematography and editing. Nothing to get excited about, but a pleasant way to spend 98 minutes. Stretch (Gregory Peck) is the laconic leader of a gang of bank robbers who escape from the pursuing cavalry by venturing across a vast salt desert and find themselves in the ghost town of Yellow Sky, once, according to a fallen sign, “the fastest growing town in the territory.” Stretch’s boys are about to give up and die of thirst until the unexpected appearance of Mike (Anne Baxter), a comely young woman who tells them where the town’s spring is. Once refreshed, the outlaws decide that the only reason the girl and her grandpa (James Barton) have stayed behind must be gold and try to convince the pair to reveal its location. -

Caliban’s Books: The Hybrid Text in Peter Greenaway’s Prospero’s Books by James Tweedie This essay discusses Peter Greenaway’s Prospero’s Books as an allegory of the ad- aptation of canonical literature to cinema, with The Tempest’s colonial concerns refigured as a confrontation between a “masterful” original and an “unfaithful” follower. The essay then situates the film’s meditation on the literary artifact and neobaroque aesthetics in opposition to the discourses of heritage circulating in Thatcherite Britain. In early Westerns there are those classic chase scenes in which we see a train and men on horses galloping beside it. Sometimes a rider succeeds in leaving his horse and pulling himself aboard the train. This action, so beloved by directors, is the emblem- atic action of cinema. All film stories use cross-overs. —John Berger The Canonical Artifact in a Thatcherite Moment. Like Shakespeare’s original, Peter Greenaway’s version of The Tempest, Prospero’s Books (1991), dramatizes a series of stormy passages. The most literal are geographical, as Prospero’s exile takes him from Milan to a Mediterranean island and, after he exacts his revenge, back to his dukedom. But the film and the play (and centuries of criticism) also suggest that the powerful conjurings of Prospero, his “arts” and “magic,” tease us out of a literal mode of reading and into an allegorical one: Prospero’s island becomes an alchemical laboratory for a reconfiguration of geological elements, a microcosm of colonial rela- tions, or a stage peopled only by actors and a director, thereby laying bare the prac- tice of stagecraft and artistic “illusion.” Greenaway’s film of course performs the literal action of the play proper, but it also provides a meditation on its large allegori- cal significance by inserting another narrative, both embedded within and superim- posed upon the play: the expanded story of Prospero’s books.
