Sole cropping and improved intercropping systems have been advocated in the last few years to increase yield in the dry savannah areas of Nigeria. This study investigated the level of adoption of high yielding cowpea cropping systems including factors that infuenced their use and farmers’ perceived production constraints and preferences. A total of 420 farmers across 36 villages of northern Nigeria were interviewed, and data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics to appraise farmers predominant cowpea cropping systems and factors that determine the use of sole versus intercropping were identifed with the aid of binary logit regression. Furthermore, pairwise comparison ranking was deployed to understand farmers’ view of cow- pea production constraints and preferred traits. Results: The results revealed that, many of the farmers (42%) still grow cowpeas in the traditional intercropping and a good number (25%) cultivate the crop as a sole crop, while 23% had felds of cowpeas in both sole and intercropping systems. Farmers reported the incidence of high insect pests, limited access to land, desire to have multiple benefts, and assurance in the event of crop failure as reasons for preference for intercropping over sole planting. -

Ibrahim 1Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Umaru Musa Yar’aduwa University, Katsina. 2Department of mathematics Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto Nigeria [*Corresponding Author: [email protected]] ABSTRACT: In this paper, data of infectious diseases were collected from the two senatorial zones of Katsina state, and analyzed using cluster analysis, a multivariate technique. This necessitated a partition of the set of diseases into groups such that the diseases with similar degree of prevalence were identified. The result of the cluster formation shows that Malaria is more prevalent in all of the two zones, followed by Cholera and Typhoid fever using the Single Linkage and Centroid methods. The Complete Linkage and Ward methods showed that Malaria is the most prevalent followed by Typhoid fever and Cholera in Katsina zone, while in Daura zone Typhoid fever is more prevalent followed by Malaria and Cholera. The number of clusters tends to vary from one zone to another. This is achieved by using Chi-square test for independence. The study concludes that the use of clustering methods provides a suitable tool for assessing the level of infections of the disease. This is because insecurity and its various multifaceted manifestations like bombings, cattle rustling, farmland destruction, kidnapping/hostage taking, destruction of life and property, creation of fear among others has become a hydra headed monster which security agents in Nigeria appear incapable of addressing. Bloody clashes between Fulani herdsmen and farmers over grazing lands have led to the killing or maiming of people and razing down of houses as well as food storage facilities. The herdsmen claimed that they are the original owners of the land in the agrarian areas. According to them, the natives had sold it to them for their cows to graze. This is an allegation the farmers have consistently debunked, saying that the land was never at any instance sold to the herdsmen and that the cows damage their crops while grazing. Cattle-rustling has also been a major cause of unrest as cows are stolen by criminal-minded youths. This scenario has played out many times in Guma, Makurdi, Gwer West, Agatu, Logo, Kwande, Buruku and parts of Kastina-Ala local government areas of Benue State. -

Rural Non-Farm Income and Inequality in Nigeria
2. BACKGROUND INFORMATION, DATA AND SURVEY AREA The utilized data were collected from five different villages surveyed in rural Northern Nigeria between 2004 and 2005. These villages are situated within the Hadejia-Nguru floodplain wetlands of Jigawa state in Northern Nigeria. Data were collected from 200 households selected using a multi-stage stratified random sampling approach. The first sampling stratum was selection of the dry savanna region of northern Nigeria, which comprises six states: Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna and Jigawa. The second stratum was the selection of Jigawa state. Two important elements informed this choice. First, Jigawa state, which was carved out of Kano state in August 1991, has the highest rural population in Nigeria; about 93 percent of the state’s population dwells in rural areas3. Second, agriculture is the dominant sector of the state’s economy, providing employment for over 90 percent of the active labor force. For effective grassroots coverage of the various agricultural activities in Jigawa state, the Jigawa Agricultural and Rural Development (JARDA) is divided into four operational zones that are headquartered in the cities of Birni Kudu, Gumel, Hadejia and Kazaure. Hadejia was selected for this study, forming the third stratum of sampling. Within the Hadejia emirate, there are eight Local Government Areas (LGAs): Auyo, Birniwa, Hadejia, Kaffin-Hausa, Mallam Madori, Kaugama, Kirikasamma and Guri. Kirikasamma LGA was selected for this study, representing the fourth sampling stratum. Kirikassama LGA was specifically chosen because of the area’s intensive economic development and correspondingly higher human population compared to many other parts of Nigeria. In the fifth stratum of sampling, five villages were selected from Kirikassama LGA: Jiyan, Likori, Matarar Galadima, Turabu and Madachi. -

The State has 44local govemment areas out of which 18 are Meso endemic with few hyper-endemic foci. The State falls in the Sudan Savannah and Sahel zones. Howeyer, the endemic areas are generally located in the Sudan savannah. The Ivermectin Distribution Programme (IDP) is in the 7th treatment round in some of the LGAs while in the 6th treatment round in others. However, CDTI strategy started in 1999. The CDTI project is therefore implemented in 779 communities of the 18 APOC approved local governments. Mobilization of the community members was conducted in all the targeted communities. In addition to mobilization, the state officials conducted advocacy visits to all the endemic local government Areas. The Launching of the commencement of 2002 prograrnme, which was performed by His Excellency, the Deputy Governor of Kano State increased awareness and acceptance of Mectizan by the people in the State. Electronic media, town criers and CDDs were among the mobilization strategies adopted for community mobilization. Targeted Training and re-training of CDTI programme personnel was conducted at state, LGA, and community levels, for those that are new in the programme as well as those with training dfficulties.
