Biographical / Historical Reverend Eli Mowry was a Presbyterian missionary and educator, originally from Ohio. In 1909 he moved to Pyongyang with his family, where they lived until 1941. Mowry eventually became head of Soongsil Academy, which was eventually to become Soongsil University. In 1919 Eli Mowry was arrested by Japanese authorities for harboring anti-Japanese student protesters. His incarceration and trial became an international incident. In 1950, Mowry was awarded the Decoration of Honor, Third Order, from the Republic of Korea. In 1968, he and his wife Lois received an additional special citation from the Korean government. • Seo Hui's Compromise and Demands for the Goryeo Dynasty
Territorial Diplomacy: Seo Hui's Compromise and Demands for the Goryeo Dynasty Jungmin Bae, Jin Young Kim, Do Hyun Choi, Sunyoung Hwang, Andrew Chanho Kim Senior Division Group Performance Process Paper: 477 words The brilliant diplomacy demonstrated by Seo Hui, a civil servant during the Goryeo dynasty, when dealing with the Khitans in 993 C.E. is literally a textbook case of “conflict and compromise”—many Korean history textbooks include the famous story of how Seo Hui averted war with the Khitans and expanded his country’s territory with only his wits. The compromise he engineered in the face of serious conflict is still praised as a solution that effectively solved the problem at hand by accurately assessing the geopolitical situation of that time. Although we knew Seo Hui’s territorial diplomacy would be a good topic for this year’s National History Day, we had significant difficulty finding primary sources to corroborate our performance. We were puzzled at the dearth of original documents dating back to the Goryeo dynasty, as most of us had expected detailed records like The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, which were written during the dynasty which succeeded Goryeo. Through research, we learned that the lack of primary documents from the Goryeo era could be attributed to the Japanese Invasions of Korea(1592-1598) during which Goryeo documents were destroyed. However, we were luckily able to gain access to online versions of Goryeosa and Goryeosajeolyo, historical records of Goryeo written during the Joseon dynasty. Although these are secondary sources, they were written before Goryeo records were lost, thus ensuring their accuracy.

  • Being in North Korea
Praise for Andray Abrahamian’s Being in North Korea “By far the most informative book I’ve read on life in North Korea. Andray Abrahamian writes very entertainingly and knows what he’s talking about. This is a rich and surprisingly revealing portrait of a super-secretive society.” — Michael Palin “Quite simply, a must-read for anybody going to North Korea. For everybody else, it is a literary excursion of the best kind — humane, funny in ways you will never expect, grim when it should be, and rich beyond belief with hard-won expertise.” — Evan Osnos, Staff Writer, The New Yorker “Each page of Being in North Korea is a fresh revelation. Andray Abrahamian has spent more time in North Korea than anybody I know and he’s such a knowledgeable and amusing guide that you’ll feel like you’ve had the privilege of an exclusive tour by the time you finish reading his book.” — Barbara Demick, Los Angeles Times “Few North Korea watchers have the breadth and depth of experiences like Andray Abrahamian. Ranging from running a nonprofit training North Koreans on entrepreneurship to undertaking academic studies as a PhD-trained scholar, the author’s work highlights his valuable perceptions about North Korea’s society and markets. Being in North Korea captures Abrahamian’s experiences in a way that informs and entertains.” — John S. Park, Harvard University “What is it like over there? This simple but at the same time immensely difficult question is what Abrahamian seeks to answer. Having worked in North Korea and speaking the language, he is the right person for such an endeavor.

Conducting Research on North Korea using Commercial Satellite Imagery, Map and Other Geographic Data Matthew G. McKinzie, Ph.D. and Thomas B. Cochran, Ph.D. Natural Resources Defense Council Presented at the 54th Pugwash Conference on Science and World Affairs Seoul, Republic of Korea 4-9 October 2004 In 2003 the Nuclear Program at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) undertook a project to create a geo-spatial database of North Korea, drawing on information from U.S. and South Korean military maps, 10-meter resolution black and white and 15-meter resolution color satellite imagery covering the entire Korean peninsula and—most importantly—NRDC’s extensive collection of higher-resolution commercial satellite imagery of North Korean cities and other specific areas. Currently the NRDC database contains over 3,500 data records, including sites relating to the North Korean economic and power-generating infrastructure, political leadership and military. Each data record is comprised of data fields that identify the point of interest by name, its coordinates and function, the source of the coordinates, reference data and other characteristics of interest. A general description of the database format, including a simplified record classification scheme to facilitate sorting the data records and constricting database queries and graphic themes, can be found in The U.S. Nuclear War Plan: A Time for Change, Chapter 3 and Appendix C (See, http://www.nrdc.org/ Fig. 1: The NRDC North Korea nuclear/warplan/warplan_ch3.pdf.
