Goyette, External Member, Sociology © Copyright 2014 by Byung Kwan Chae All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT This dissertation is a sociological exploration of Korean Protestant immigrant churches in the United States and the influence of Confucian traditions on them. Neo- Confucianism was accepted as the state ideology in Korea in the late fourteenth century, and its influences are still strong in Koreans’ expressions of thought and worldviews, and Korean immigrants in the United States are no exception. Confucian elements are observed not only in Korean Protestant churches in Korea but also Korean immigrant churches in the United States. Thus, it can be said that Korean immigrant churches have the characteristics of a transnational religious institution. Transnationally, Confucian characteristics affect Korean churches. Further, Confucian traditions are integral to a collective consciousness for Korean immigrants, and thus their relationships and manners, based on Confucian traditions and teachings, enable them to maintain and reinforce their social solidarity. Moreover, such Confucian teachings and cultural mores are inculcated in most Koreans’ habitus. As social agents, church members use symbolic capital, such as age and Confucian manners, to gain higher status in the church. In particular, age can be considered generational capital that determines and legitimizes church members’ positions. -

Conclusion Abstract The Koreans, like the Israelites who have a history of hardship, are the heavenly people, chosen people, hidden in the history of the world that achieved the "Miracle on the Han River" overcoming numerous hardships and foreign invasions. This paper is the result of a long-term study on the activities and emigration of the Dan Tribe among the ancient Israelites. It is an archaeologically, linguistically and culturally important proof paper that will unveil the heavenly providence and secrets of the Koreans, the Dan Tribe. The main topics and contents of this paper are explained in three parts. In the first part, by succeeding in deciphering the ancient-Hebrew patterns on the roof-end tiles excavated in the Daedong Riverside in the Korean - 1 - Peninsula, I will reveal that Dangun, the founder of Korea, was the lost Dan Tribe of ancient Israelites. In the second part, by studying more than 100 kinds of evidences, such as similar customs, cultures, and temperaments of the Korean and Israelites, from the academic aspects of various adjacent studies, I will presented a proof that the King of Dangun(檀君),which belonged to the Kingdom of Northern Israel’ moved from the TEL DAN region to the northeast, settled on the Korean Peninsula, and established Gojoseon following the heavenly order. -

Schmitt What problem do Korean churches have now? Korean churches have had serious growth problems since the 1990s'. Although Korean churches have grown rapidly with the economic growth of Korea, there have been many contributions and evil influences of shamanism, which lies deep in the minds of Korean people. Obviously, shamanism has made a contribution to growth of the Korean church since Christianity was introduced. Many churches and pastors have consented to or utilized such a tendency. However, this created serious problems. Shamanism is anti-Biblical. Shamanism brought about a theoretical combination, transmutation of religion and many mistakes in church life. A questionnaire was used to reveal; these facts. Ultimately, this thesis calls attention to shamanist elements in Korean churches and suggests how to eliminate them. 894 Lunar New Year The lunar New Year, known as 561, W6ndan, W6ni! or Cbongch '0, is one of the most important holidays in Korea. During this holiday, there are traffic jams throughout the country as people rush to see their family and relatives. On the morning of Lunar New Year, people don traditional dress (hanbok). Various foods and wine are prepared, and then set in front of an ancestral tablet. The table is meticulously arranged according to Confucian tradition; however, many families also have their own traditions governing details of the arrangement. In general, fish is put on the east, meat on the west, fruit in front, rice and soup behind and liquor on the front table. A ceremony is then held during which the male family members pay respect to their deceased ancestors up to the fourth generation by making three full bows. Family members also visit the graves of their deceased ancestors. On this holiday, after cutting the grass from around the grave, they make a simple offering and then bow three times. In addition to paying respect to the deceased, each family member is expected to make two formal bows to his or her elders. According to custom, the elders then give the person a gift of money, particularly if the person is a child. Special foods are prepared for this holiday. In particular, rice-cake soup is typically served instead ofrice. For this reason, the question 'How many bowls of rice-cake soup have you eaten?' is sometimes used to ask one's age. In North Korea and China, mandu (dumpling) soup is often eaten instead. -

Tilland University of Washington Abstract Hateful and Heartwarming Bonds: The Senses as Strategy in the South Korean Family Bonnie R. Tilland Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Ann Anagnost Department of Anthropology This dissertation investigates women’s strategizing around the senses in South Korea, tracing the ways that women move between sensory experience as an ideal and as an object to put into motion. I argue that the language of the sensory is invoked to stand up to state or societal pressures regarding family-making, child-rearing, and maternal subjectivity. The senses, affect, and emotions are employed to carve out space for individual and family well-being within neoliberal logics of productivity, but these new areas of sensory possibility are too often colonized by the same neoliberal logics. Utilizing multi-sited ethnography, media analysis, and an interdisciplinary feminist perspective, I followed the language of sensory development and sensory experience in practice through participant-observation at community spaces, and through ethnographic interviews. The main issues of this dissertation include: first, the ways that the extended family in South Korea is structured through visual culture and watching/being seen, resulting in ambivalence, particularly in the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship. Second, how touch and other senses are conceived of as avenues for emotional and psychological fortification for young children, and how this cultivation of sensory education is extended not just to the mother-child bond, but also to national healing. -

ABSTRACT Gajung (House) Church Ministry as a Renewal Movement for Korean Protestant Church - Focusing on the Ministry of Seoul Baptist Church of Houston, Texas After Protestant missionaries came to the Korean peninsula in 1884, the Christian faith began to spread among Koreans, and Korean Protestant churches started to grow. During the modernization and industrialization of Korean society beginning in the 1960s, Korean Protestantism even saw the emergence of mega-churches like Yoido Full Gospel Church, Kwanglim Methodist Church, and Myungsung Presbyterian Church. Many people from both inside and outside the churches, however, currently criticize Korean churches. Critics even derided Christians who during their mission trip to Afghanistan in 2007 were kidnapped and killed by the Taliban. This research focuses on how to renew Korean churches through Gajung (House) church ministry as a response to the current situation of Korean Protestant churches. Chapter one introduces the statement of the problem, research questions, the theoretical framework, and the research methodology of this case study of Seoul Baptist Church of Houston, Texas, USA, (SBCH) and three other local churches in Korea participating in the same Gajung church ministry. Chapter Two outlines Korean church history from the earliest contact with the Christian faith, even before the coming of the first official missionary, the efforts to spread the gospel, and the remarkable church growth and the efforts promoting discipleship. Finally, the chapter discuses the need for church renewal in Korean Protestant churches in terms of socio-phenomenological and theological concerns. Chapter Three outlines the basic philosophy of Gajung church ministry of SBCH.
