An Examination of A.W. Tozer's Life As Practical Applications for Korean LIBERTY BAPTIST THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY AN EXAMINATION OF A.W. TOZER’S LIFE AS PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS FOR KOREAN PASTORS TO COMBAT THE PROSPERITY GOSPEL A Thesis Project Submitted to Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF MINISTRY By Sin Soo Jeon Lynchburg, Virginia December, 2014 Copyright © 2014 by Sin Soo Jeon All Rights Reserved ii LIBERTY BAPTIST THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY THESIS PROJECT APPROVAL SHEET A¯ _____________________________ GRADE Dr. Frank J. TOZER’S LIFE AS PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS FOR KOREAN PASTORS TO COMBAT THE PROSPERITY GOSPEL Jeon, Sin Soo Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary, 2014 Mentor: Dr. Frank Schmitt In recent years, more Korean pastors are preaching the prosperity gospel in order to pursue quantitative church growth and seem uninterested in companionship with God. However, faithful men, like Aiden Wilson Tozer, always preached the gospel of the Cross alongside an intimate relationship with God. His life and ministry are examples of a true pastor called by God. Like Tozer, pastors in South Korea must discipline themselves to walk with God. The purpose of this thesis is to provide Korean pastors with practical applications for combating the prosperity gospel by building intimate companionship with God in their ministries by examining Tozer’s life, writings, and sermons. The survey related to Korean pastors’ ministry and spiritual lives will be used to study and develop practical applications for intimacy with God. This study will help Korean pastors to combat the prosperity gospel and building an intimate relationship with God. Abstract length: 146 words. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First, I would like to give thanks and glory to the Lord who called me as a pastor and has led my family and I in His boundless mercy and love until now. I cannot help confessing that I am what I am by the grace of my Lord; I believe He will be with me until the day I finish the race and complete the task He has given me. I also gratefully acknowledge my mentor, Frank Schmitt, Ed. D. Though he has been in poor health, he has supervised my thesis with deep consideration and heartfelt affection. I will not forget the dedicated guidance he has given me. Additionally, I want to give thanks to my reader, Rodney Dempsey, D. Min., who carefully read my thesis in the midst of his busy schedule. I would like to thank the entire staff of the Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary as well. I can never thank Pastor Jin-Hwan Han and the members of Seoul Seomoon Church enough for giving me the opportunity to study abroad. I also want to thank Pastor Young-Chan Kim and the members of Light & Salt Presbyterian Church. I have a sister, Adeola O. Oyelabi, whom I will never forget in my life. She is my family in Christ and has been with me as a good proofreader and faithful prayer partner. I keenly appreciate her. I cannot help but give thanks to my family: to my parents and parents-in-law who have prayed with tears for me, and my brothers and sisters who have encouraged me in my studies. I am deeply indebted to my beloved wife, Yi-Young Yoon, and my children, Eunbi and Hyunbin. My wife has been of help to me with her ceaseless prayer, dedicated love, and adorable v encouragement, and my loveable children have also been beyond helpful during my studies and have endured until the completion of my thesis. All thanks and glory to God! vi TABLE OF CONTENTS ABSTRACT...................................................................................................................................iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS........................................................................................................... v TABLE OF CONTENTS ............................................................................................................vii LIST OF FIGURES.................................................................................................... xiii CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION ............................................................................... 1 The Statement of the Problem ............................................................................... 8 The Statement of Limitations .............................................................................. 9 The Biblical and Theological Basis ................................................................... 10 Biblical Basis ........................................................................................ 10 1 Corinthians 2:10-11 ............................................................... 10 Ephesians 6:18, Jude 1:20 ....................................................... 12 Psalm 119:18 ............................................................................ 14 Theological Basis .................................................................................. 15 Spreading the Kingdom of God ................................................ 15 A Prophetic Preacher ................................................................ 18 A Pastor as a Good Example .................................................... 20 The Statement of Methodology ........................................................................... 22 The Review of the Literature .............................................................................. 24 On the Prosperity Gospel ...................................................................... 24 vii On A. Pardington, Ph.D., one of the most gifted and devoted of men, allowed his life to fall into the ground and die that it might bring forth much fruit. After a marvelous experience of healing which released him from years of helpless suffering he secured the most thorough training which America could offer and then gladly spent himself in humble sacrificial service as a teacher of Christian workers and missionaries. His best years were consecrated to the ministry of the Word in the classrooms of the Missionary Training Institute at Nyack. To him fell the heavy duty of carrying the main courses and supplying the unbroken stream of inspiration which held restless young people to the necessary training process.

  • Confucian Protestant Churches Crossing the Pacific: a Sociological Study of Pre-Christian Asian Influences on Korean Immigrant Churches in America
CONFUCIAN PROTESTANT CHURCHES CROSSING THE PACIFIC: A SOCIOLOGICAL STUDY OF PRE-CHRISTIAN ASIAN INFLUENCES ON KOREAN IMMIGRANT CHURCHES IN AMERICA A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Byung Kwan Chae May 2014 Examining Committee Members: Dr. Terry Rey, Advisory Chair, Religion Dr. Sydney D. White, Religion Dr. Leonard Swidler, Religion Dr. Kimberly A. Goyette, External Member, Sociology © Copyright 2014 by Byung Kwan Chae All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT This dissertation is a sociological exploration of Korean Protestant immigrant churches in the United States and the influence of Confucian traditions on them. Neo- Confucianism was accepted as the state ideology in Korea in the late fourteenth century, and its influences are still strong in Koreans’ expressions of thought and worldviews, and Korean immigrants in the United States are no exception. Confucian elements are observed not only in Korean Protestant churches in Korea but also Korean immigrant churches in the United States. Thus, it can be said that Korean immigrant churches have the characteristics of a transnational religious institution. Transnationally, Confucian characteristics affect Korean churches. Further, Confucian traditions are integral to a collective consciousness for Korean immigrants, and thus their relationships and manners, based on Confucian traditions and teachings, enable them to maintain and reinforce their social solidarity. Moreover, such Confucian teachings and cultural mores are inculcated in most Koreans’ habitus. As social agents, church members use symbolic capital, such as age and Confucian manners, to gain higher status in the church. In particular, age can be considered generational capital that determines and legitimizes church members’ positions.

  • Dynasty in Korea
A Comparative Study on the Deciphering Petroglyph of Mt. Lawz(so-called Mt. Sinai) & the Ancient Hebrew on the Roof-End Tiles of Gojoseon(古朝鮮) Dynasty in Korea Park Tae-Seon (The Master of Ancient Hebrew Research Institute) E-mail: [email protected] Han Gang-Hyen (The President of International Academy of Neohumans Culture) E-mail: [email protected] Introduction The Body Ⅰ. ‘The Roof-End–Tile Pattern’ of Gojoseon(古朝鮮)Dynasty was Ancient Hebrew. Ⅱ. The Same Folk Gulture and Customs of the Koreans and Ancient Israelites Ⅲ. The Decoding and Secret of Mt. Sinai’s Petroglyph on which the Red Sea Miracle was Engraved by Moses. Conclusion Abstract The Koreans, like the Israelites who have a history of hardship, are the heavenly people, chosen people, hidden in the history of the world that achieved the "Miracle on the Han River" overcoming numerous hardships and foreign invasions. This paper is the result of a long-term study on the activities and emigration of the Dan Tribe among the ancient Israelites. It is an archaeologically, linguistically and culturally important proof paper that will unveil the heavenly providence and secrets of the Koreans, the Dan Tribe. The main topics and contents of this paper are explained in three parts. In the first part, by succeeding in deciphering the ancient-Hebrew patterns on the roof-end tiles excavated in the Daedong Riverside in the Korean - 1 - Peninsula, I will reveal that Dangun, the founder of Korea, was the lost Dan Tribe of ancient Israelites. In the second part, by studying more than 100 kinds of evidences, such as similar customs, cultures, and temperaments of the Korean and Israelites, from the academic aspects of various adjacent studies, I will presented a proof that the King of Dangun(檀君),which belonged to the Kingdom of Northern Israel’ moved from the TEL DAN region to the northeast, settled on the Korean Peninsula, and established Gojoseon following the heavenly order.

Schmitt What problem do Korean churches have now? Korean churches have had serious growth problems since the 1990s'. Although Korean churches have grown rapidly with the economic growth of Korea, there have been many contributions and evil influences of shamanism, which lies deep in the minds of Korean people. Obviously, shamanism has made a contribution to growth of the Korean church since Christianity was introduced. Many churches and pastors have consented to or utilized such a tendency. However, this created serious problems. Shamanism is anti-Biblical. Shamanism brought about a theoretical combination, transmutation of religion and many mistakes in church life. A questionnaire was used to reveal; these facts. Ultimately, this thesis calls attention to shamanist elements in Korean churches and suggests how to eliminate them. Abstract length: 125 words IV ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Liberty University has become one of my almamaters. I have some good memories of going to the classrooms on the quiet snowy campus. There was also a great change in me while I was taking the courses.
