    Eugeen Van Mieghem: List of Works – Large Print Gallery 17: Antwerp and the River Scheldt Sack Mender Before a Dock, c.1926 Oil on canvas, 69 x 79cm Province of Antwerp The port of Antwerp was exceptional for the large number of women who worked on the docks. From the 1860s women replaced men, who had been demanding higher wages, in areas such as mending sacks, cleaning hides and picking coffee beans. There were an estimated 2000 women working in the port around 1900. Strangers, 1903 Oil on cardboard, 26 x 58cm Private collection Between 1873 and 1935 the Red Star Line transported almost three million emigrants from Antwerp to North America, many of whom were Jewish migrants from Eastern Europe. Van Mieghem lived in close proximity to this vast movement of people as in 1893 the Red Star Line built a warehouse opposite Eugeen’s mother’s café. There every migrant underwent a medical check and their clothes and luggage were disinfected. Van Mieghem’s painting “Vreemden” (“strangers”) records the traffic both ways – the port as a point of contact between cultures.     Het leven van Eugeen Van Mieghem 1875 Op 1 oktober 1875 werd Eugeen Van Mieghem geboren in de ouderlijke herberg In Het Hert op de Van Meterenkaai. Zijn vader Henri was scheepsbevrachter terwijl zijn moeder Virginie het café openhield. Eugeen groeide op aan de oever van de Schelde en temidden van de toenmalige havenactiviteit. In het café oberserveerde hij de kleurrijke bezoekers: schippers, matrozen, natiebazen, buildragers en zakkenmaaksters. De haven en de gewone mens werden later zijn inspiratiebron. De kunstenaar liet ons een indrukwekkend, uniek en virtuoos beeld na van de mens rond 1900 in een kosmopolitische wereldhaven. Van Mieghem werd terecht de “kunstenaar van het volk” genoemd. In 1873 startte de Red Star Line met het vervoer van emigranten vanuit Antwerpen naar de Nieuwe Wereld (eerst Amerika maar na WO I ook Canada). De schepen meerden aan bij de Rijnkaai. Het eerste kantoor van de Red Star Line bevond zich op de Jordaenskaai. 1883 Door de groeiende activiteit en de grotere schepen moest de Antwerpse haven uitbreiden. De stenen kademuren werden gebouwd en de oude vlieten gedempt. Rond 1883 bereikten de werken de Van Meterenkaai en vader Van Mieghem bouwde een nieuwe herberg in de Montevideostraat. Het café van de familie Van Mieghem (Montevideostraat nr. 6 met telefoonnummer 21) bevond zich op het Eilandje, een havenwijk volledig omgeven door de Schelde en de dokken. De straat was de grens van de haven met de bewoonde wereld. Eugeen liep school in de Keistraat en toonde er al snel zijn tekentalent. Aan het Antwerpse Koninklijk Atheneum kreeg hij les van o.a.

    Paper for the IAMS assembly in Malaysia 2004 RELIGION FOR MIGRANTS THE CASE OF THE NETHERLANDS Joop Vernooij In the Dutch public debate on migration the issue of religion has been underrepresented until now. Nevertheless religion is for migrants, not for all of them, very important and essential. In this essay I give first an historical sketch of the religious panorama of the Netherlands and especially of the religions of the migrants. I can distinguish different aspects and models of migrant religion. At the end I can design a new type of theology and pastoral approach for the migrants and the existing institutions of churches in the Netherlands. God at the steerage We want to start with a perhaps strange introduction under the title God at the steerage, as a tween-decks passenger. The Jewish Historical Museum of Amsterdam organized for 2003- 2004 an exposition of works of the Belgian artist Eugeen van Mieghem (1875-1930) living in the harbour of Antwerp, painting people on exodus, predominantly people of Eastern Europe around the turning of the century, to the new world of the United States of America with the Red Star Line. The expo is underlining the quest of migration. It is a phenomenon of life, a clear cut in history of individuals and nations. We have to do with a significant illustration of the migrants by ships, and actually by airplane, but with as basis the ship, the vehicle of a new life under new circumstances, centuries long and without end. Eugeen van Mieghem made migrants to the main subjects of his artistic life.

    Eugeen van Mieghem (1875-1930) and the Jewish Emigrants of the Red Star Line I) Eugeen Van Mieghem The early years Eugeen Van Mieghem was born at his parent’s inn in Antwerp (Belgium) on October 1 st 1875. His father, a former bargee opened a tavern at the bank of the river Scheldt around 1870. It was only in 1863 that a new spring for the Antwerp port started as the Belgian government bought from Holland the free use of the river Scheldt. Around 1880 the Van Mieghem family moved slightly further north to Montevideostraat on The Little Island (‘Het Eilandje’), the port area surrounded by the River Scheldt and the docks. The new inn was situated right opposite the building belonging to the Red Star Line, the shipping company that transported nearly 2.7 million European emigrants (of which Jews from Eastern Europe) to their new lives in America and Canada. In 1892 Van Mieghem enrolled at the Antwerp academy of art but was forced to leave the it after a clash with Professor Siberdt (the very same man who had dismissed Vincent Van Gogh in 1886). His father sent him to the port to look for freight for his shipping agency business. The new social trends of the beginning of the 20 th century struck a chord with Van Mieghem and he began to form ideals he never renounced: he wanted to be the artist of the people in this fast-growing world port. The world passed through his street The Ellis Island Immigration Station was opened in New York on January 1 st 1892 to receive the influx of exiles.

Who would have thought that a murder in Sarajevo would turn into a worldwide conflict, involving dozens of countries? The war to end all wars, was supposed to be over by Christmas 1914. Yet four years and millions of casualties later, the world looked back in horror. Home by Christmas n hindsight it seems improbable but, at the actual onset of the war in August 1914, both allies and central states were convinced that they would fight a short war battle - just a quick confrontation to straighten out matters, settle accounts and then go back home to celebrate Christmas. The men who went to the front, whistling, believed it and said to their wives, I’ll be home by Christmas! They would Isoon find out how wrong they were. Did each party have its justifications for going to war at the start? As the war went on, the initial reasons for being involved seemed to become less clear.     Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane Seminar: Artist as Witness - Migrations Wednesday 24th May 14:00 – 16:00 Artist as Witness - Migrations is a seminar in response to the exhibition Port Life - Eugeen Van Mieghem. Invited speakers will take Mieghem's work as a starting point to explore the idea of the 'Artist as Witness' in society and will expand into broader contemporary issues, such as climate change, labour migration and globalisation challenging the world today. For centuries various forms of art practices have responded to real world experiences and artists have consciously taken on the role of witness to events - from the intimate to the historical in scale - across human society. What does being a witness mean for an artist and how has such a role changed over time? Can meaningful work result? What responsibilities do artists and the art process take on and how can these responsibilities be fulfilled? These questions and more will be discussed by Alaina Claire Feldman, Dr Niamh Ann Kelly and Erwin Joos in individual presentations and a chaired discussion with Declan McGonagle. This seminar is initiated by Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane in collaboration with the Port Perspectives Programme – a focus on reconnecting Dublin port and Dublin city.
