Duro Oni examines the role of lighting in the contemporary Nigerian theater with emphasis on theatrical activities in Arena Lagos. .is Lighting? A good itartin.g DOint will involve reluming to •rancis Reid's2 observation that "Stage ighting is not an exact science: it is science in the service, of performing arts. Rules are very few it indeed there are any." Lighting is a combination of science and art; science being the understgnding of trie technology in the proguction of righting instruments and equipment and art being the creative use of such instruments and equipment. For. lighting is as much a oqrt of the artistic process as any of the other aspects of the theater, helping to create the necessary atmosphere and mood for <GLENDORA REVltVfxAlriain Quarterly on the ArtsxVOI3@No2> <107> 0 dramatiC presentation. In defining stage lighting, Reid3 summarized the main aims of lighting for theatrical productions thus: Stage lighting is a fluid, selective, atmospheric, sculptural illumination appropriate to the style of a particular production. Reid's definition prescribes the primary functions of stage lighting - and accepted by most writers on the subject — as illumination, selectivity, fluidity, atmosphere, mood, dimensionality and creating effects. It was not until recently that the functions of stage lighting were further elaborated upon.

  • “500 Children Missing in Lagos”: Child Kidnapping and Public Anxiety in Colonial Nigeria
CHAPTER 4 “500 Children Missing in Lagos”: Child Kidnapping and Public Anxiety in Colonial Nigeria Saheed Aderinto and Paul Osifodunrin Introduction The title of this chapter is a front-page headline of the July 31, 1956, issue of the West African Pilot, the best-selling newspaper in 1950s Nigeria.1 The newspaper reported the arrest of one Lamidi Alabi, accused of kidnapping three children (Ganiyu Adisa, Musibawu Adio, and Asani Afoke, all boys, between the ages of three and four) on July 30 and the tumultuous atmosphere at the Lagos Central Police Station, where he was then held. It was truly a difficult day for the police force, which tried to control a mob of over 5,000, com- posed of a “surging crowd of angry women” that wanted to lynch the 38-year-old Alabi for committing a dastardly act; among them were “several mothers” who each sought to ascertain that her child was not among the victims.2 The riot police, a special security force, had to be called in to get the outburst under control.3 The Evening Times reported that traffic at Tinubu Square “came almost to a standstill.”4 Alabi’s arrest did not end the public interest in his case. His first court appearance played host to a “record crowd” of “anxious” onlookers whose interest in the saga only increased as the police investigation and criminal proceedings progressed.5 This chapter explores the phenomenon of child abduction and public anxiety in colonial Nigeria through examination of newspaper sources supplemented with colonial archival materials. It engages the numerous circumstances under which children lost their freedom to 98 SAHEED ADERINTO AND PAUL OSIFODUNRIN kidnappers and the responses from the colonial government and Nigerians.

  • Physical Planning Policies on Lagos Island and Their Effects on Urban Morphology

It is the visible limb of the state that is used to direct and control development. In Lagos State, physical planning is used more in ‘development control” rather than “development planning”. It also comes into use in the many instances of urban renewal. The rapid urbanization witnessed by Lagos State brought about a sprawl on the whole of Lagos Island. The combination of rapid urbanization, physical planning policies and the cultural heritage of the area have evolved a cocktail of highly diverse styles in the buildings and metropolitan form within the same continuum. This research examines the physical planning policies on Lagos Island over a twenty-year period (1995-2015) and their direct effects on the evolution of the city while trying to control development.

  • Politics in Nigeria: a Discourse of Osita Ezenwanebe’S ‘Giddy Festival’
Humanitatis Theoreticus Journal, Vol. 1(1) (2018) (Original paper) O R I G I N A L A R T I C L E Theatre Politics in Nigeria: A Discourse of Osita Ezenwanebe’s ‘Giddy Festival’ Philip Peter Akoje Department of Theatre Arts, Kogi State University, Ayigba. Email: [email protected] Phone Number: +2347039781766 Abstract Politics is a vital aspect of every society. This is due to the fact that the general development of any country is first measured by its level of political development. Good political condition in a nation is a sine qua non to economic growth. A corrupt and unstable political system in any country would have a domino-effect on the country's economic outlook and social lives of the people. The concept of politics itself continued to be interpreted by many political scholars, critics and the masses from different perspectives. Corruption, political assassination, greed, perpetrated not only by politicians but also by the masses are the societal ills that continue to militate against socio-economic and political development in most African countries, particularly Nigeria. Peaceful political transition to the opposition party in Nigeria in recent times has given a different dimension to the country’s political position for other countries in the region to emulate. This paper addresses the concept of politics and presents corruption in Nigerian society from the point of theatre, using Osita Ezenwanebe’s Giddy Festival. The investigation is grounded in sociological theory and the concept of political realism. This paper recommends that politics can be violent-free if all the actors in the game develop selfless qualities of leadership for the benefit of the ruled.

79I /f NIGERIAN MILITARY GOVERNMENT AND PRESS FREEDOM, 1966-79 THESIS Presented to the Graduate Council of the North Texas State University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS By Ehikioya Agboaye, B.A. Denton, Texas May, 1984 Agboaye, Ehikioya, Nigerian Military Government and Press Freedom, 1966-79. Master of Arts (Journalism), May, 1984, 3 tables, 111 pp., bibliography, 148 titles. The problem of this thesis is to examine the military- press relationship inNigeria from 1966 to 1979 and to determine whether activities of the military government contributed to violation of press freedom by prior restraint, postpublication censorship and penalization. Newspaper and magazine articles related to this study were analyzed. Interviews with some journalists and mili- tary personnel were also conducted. Materials collected show that the military violated some aspects of press freedom, but in most cases, however, journalists were free to criticize government activities. The judiciary prevented the military from arbitrarily using its power against the press. The findings show that although the military occasionally attempted suppressing the press, there are few instances that prove that journalists were denied press freedom.
