Not content to stay stagnate, our Club Racing program continues to evolve. In 2011, we began the BFGoodrich Tires SCCA Super Tour program. With the help of our partner, BFGoodrich Tires, the series expanded to nine events for 2012, and included one special event in each division. These race weekends featured elements that aren’t always available at National Races, adding to the competitors’ experi- ence. We also unveiled the Majors program in the middle part of the coun- try this season, giving racers in the Rocky Mountain, Midwest and Southwest Divisions an opportunity to run for a larger championship without having to travel the country. -

(Boyle Special) HAER No. IN-112 Location: Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana Present Owner: Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana Present Use: Display and limited exhibition Significance: The 1938 Maserati 8.C.T.F. chassis no. 3032, known as the Boyle Special, is nationally significant based on its relation to four criteria. First, it is associated with important events in automotive history and culture. The Boyle Special is the most successful automobile to be campaigned at the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. It was driven to victory twice, to third place twice and to fourth place once. The Maserati is associated with significant persons in automotive and American history, including: Wilbur Shaw, a successful and prominent American racing car driver and the first postwar president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway; Michael Boyle, an important American labor leader and race team owner; Ted Horn, Indianapolis racer and AAA National Championship winner; and Harry C. “Cotton” Henning, chief mechanic for Boyle Racing Headquarters who oversaw the mechanical preparation and attention for multiple Indianapolis winning cars including this Maserati 8.C.T.F. Third, the Boyle Special features significant design and construction value. Advanced engineering enabled the vehicle to remain competitive at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for over a decade and is representative of the work of a master, Ernesto Maserati, and the builders at Officine Alfieri Maserati S.A. -

Lil’ Red Rooster Our story begins with a highway smash-up. In spring of 1962, in the dead of an Arizona night, across old highway Route 66, on the remote desert near Yucca, Rocky Philipp, one of our three protagonists, and one of the Indy 500’s most savvy chief mechanics, had just left Los Angeles in a station wagon and was on his way back to Indy towing on an open trailer the J.H. Rose, an upright dirt championship car soon to create a sensation at Milwaukee. But Rocky fell asleep at the wheel and nearly rammed into a bridge abutment. And then Rocky; the station wagon and open trailer; and the J.H. Rose, all went swerving off the highway and plunging to the bottom of a dry river bed, where everything flipped over. Rocky was unharmed; the stooge helper riding along with him had lost a few teeth; the station wagon was totaled and the open trailer badly bent; but the J.H. Rose – so new it hadn’t been painted or chromed– was remarkably intact. Our story continues. A few weeks later, in New Jersey, on Trenton’s mile oval of paving, occurred the first 100-mile race of the season and the first for the J.H. Rose, which still was unpainted and un- chromed. Even worst, after riding through rainstorms on the open trailer, most of its coachwork was coated with rust. But rusted or not it set a world’s record for a mile track; also broke Trenton’s qualifying speed mark by four mph, and although losing to A.J.Foyt, Parnelli Jones, Rodger Ward, and Don Branson, it defeated Jim Hurtubise, Len Sutton, and Roger McCluskey. -

This event, made possible with the help of our friends and partners at Mazda and the Sports Car Rac- ing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), was met with questions at its announcement that have been answered in a big way, with more than 530 drivers on the entry list and a rejunvenaton of the west coast program all season long. While we haven’t been west of the Rockies since River- side International Raceway in 1968, it’s hard to believe it will be that long before we return again. The question on everyone’s mind, even more than usual, is who is going to win? Are there hidden gems on the west coast who may be making their first Runoffs appearance that will make a name for themselves on the national stage, or will the traditional contenders learn a new track quickly enough to hold their titles? My guess is that we’ll see some of each. -
