    NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions By Ned Hémard My Spy Boy The great New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian anthem Iko Iko was first recorded as Jock-A-Mo in 1954 for Checker Records by New Orleans singer James Crawford, who worked under the name of Sugar Boy & the Cane Cutters. His group was also known as the Chipaka Shaweez, and the song is loaded with Créole patois (a blend of French and, in this case it is believed, some original Gambian words). Jock-A-Mo, Dr. John tells us, “means ‘jester’ in the old myth. It is Mardi Gras music, and the Shaweez was one of many Mardi Gras groups who dressed up in far out Indian costumes and came on as Indian tribes.” Also in the Chipaka Shaweez, according to Dr. John, “were Professor Longhair on piano, Jake Myles, Big Boy Myles, Irv Bannister on guitar, and Eugene ‘Bones’ Jones on drums.” Crawford, who “lived near the Battlefield where the Indians paraded” (Simon Bolivar and Melpomene), drew his tune from much earlier rhythms and incantations: “It came from two Indian chants that I put music to,” he explained. “Iko Iko was like a victory chant that the Indians would shout. Jock-A-Mo was a chant that was called when the Indians went into battle. I just put them together and made a song out of them.” Jock-A-Mo became a huge hit in 1965 as Iko Iko by the Dixie Cups on the Red Bird label, and was later included on the soundtrack for the 1987 film “The Big Easy”.

Toward illustrating this research potential, changing paleo-landscapes 2500–1500 BC reveal the ancient conditions of the places where people lived in both Taiwan and the northern Philippines, in this case exploring what transpired there during a critical time period that heralded deep transformation of the language history, cultural heritage, economic production, and population demography of Island Southeast Asia as known today. During the time range of interest, the region’s coastlines and habitat configurations were substantially different from today’s circum- stances, prior to change in sea level, accelerated slope erosion, lowland sedimentary buildup, and some of the world’s most rapid recorded tectonic uplift. The results show that people in eastern Taiwan at 2200–2000 BC faced a crisis of limited suitable landforms for their particular mode of subsistence economy, thus instigating overseas migration to the northern Philippines as a means to expand into other territories, with continued effects through 1500 BC and thereafter. She started playing the piano when she was two years old and the violin when she was three. Soon afterwards she started improvising simple melodies on the piano. Her attempts at composition started aged four, when she began writing an opera about a pirate called Don Alonzo.When she was 6, she composed her first full piano sonata, and at 7 she composed a very short opera called The Sweeper of Dreams. There followed various compositions for violin, piano, and chamber ensembles. Aged 9, Alma wrote a Concerto for violin and orchestra, which she premiered in 2015. Her first piece for symphony orchestra, Dance of the Solent Mermaids was also premiered in 2015. Aged 10, Alma finished a full length opera, Cinderella. A chamber version of the opera wasperformed in 2015, and the full version will be premiered in Vienna in December 2016. As a soloist on both violin and piano, Alma has performed in England, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Uruguay, USA, Israel, and Japan. She has also performed in prestigious events, including Google's Zeitgeist, alongside speakers such as Physicist Stephen Hawking. Alma’s first CD, The Music of Alma Deutscher was released in 2013, featuring a selection of her early compositions up to age 8. Alma has featured prominently in the international press and broadcast media, including the Ellen Degeneres Show in the US. Her YouTube channel has more than 3 million views.
