FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DESIREÉ PEPPER-VENZANT

Dear HFS Supporters, Friends, and Family:

In April, I spoke of a little hummingbird who took on what seemed to be an impossible task. But the little bird never gave up, because he was doing what he could to make a difference. This is what we are doing at HFS Schol- ars, making a difference by doing what we can for scholars and families. HFS is pursuing a new journey this year; one filled with excitement as we continue to develop new leaders.

HFS provides high school scholars with not only financial assistance, but one-on-one mentoring with successful profes- sionals. HFS has over 100 volunteers that assist our scholars through mentoring and support. We are committed to aca- demic excellence. We provide educational enrichment group activities and college admission support. We have dedi- cated and qualified academic directors that meet monthly with scholars tracking their success.

Our mission is to assist economically disadvantaged Chicago inner-city high school students, who show academic and leadership promise, achieve their educational goals. Our objective is clear – providing long term life skills which lead to success for our scholars. HFS is in its 17th year of in preparing scholars to take on the world. 100% of our graduates have matriculated to attend top colleges and universities, including Big Ten, Ivy League and Historically Black Col- leges. Our scholars are National Honor Society students, officers of student government, musicians in school bands, performers in school plays, and leaders in team sports. While our scholars set out to achieve the best, they realize the importance of giving back to their communities. Throughout the years, students perform community service and this year alone, our scholars performed over 3,000 service hours. Our scholars helped at homes for the elderly, assisted with high school charity functions, participated in walk-a-thons and served in community centers/parks and public libraries.

HFS continues to raise funds to support scholars. The current economic climate has resulted in increased difficulties for many families to afford a quality private education for their children. It is even more critical and urgent that we support as many scholars as financially possible. We depend on the financial support from individuals and companies to provide assistance with our scholarships. Each scholar benefits from every donated dollar. For one year, you can support a scholar for $5,000, send a junior to an ACT prep course for $500, or send an incoming freshmen to summer school to prepare for the rigor of high school for as little as $400. We need your support to help us in order to make a difference in the young individual lives of our scholars. They are our future!

Thank you very much for your continued support of the HFS Chicago Scholars program.

Sincerely,

Desireé Pepper-Venzant Executive Director

This year, Big Shoulders is providing partial scholarships to 9 HFS scholars attending Big Shoulders Fund-supported high schools. The Big Shoulders Fund, long a supporter of HFS, has been a champion for Chicago’s inner-city families since 1986 raising over $10M a year for Catholic elementary and high schools. We are honored to collaborate with Big Shoulders in support of our scholars.

The HFS program has a very special place in my heart. Thanks to the HFS, my parents were able to afford to send both me and my brother to private Catholic schools. Moreover, through the mentorship program, I was able to form a close relationship with a peer who guided me through proper decision- making, setting career goals, and life outside of my neighborhood. The HFS program opened doors for me, as I was able to grow both as a student and as a person.

After graduating from Holy Trinity High School in 2000, I attended the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). I chose to major in bioengineering, due to its diverse applications in healthcare and potential growth and impact in research. After graduating from UIC, I had the opportunity to work at Baxter Healthcare, as a Biomedical Equipment Technician in the Medical Device Depart- ment. While at Baxter my interest of flow analysis of the infusion pumps grew, and as a result, I decided to pursue a graduate degree in chemical engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). During my two years at IIT, I became involved in a research project studying the use of nano-hydrogels for targeted and controlled drug delivery. My experience at IIT further stimulated my passion to study and conduct research. As a result, I am currently pursuing a doctorate in chemical engineering at Case Western Reserve University (, OH) Fact… studying nanomaterials for diverse applications in energy conversion and storage. My success would not have been possible without the support of HFS and the 100% of HFS impression that they left upon me. I appreciate that I had the opportunity to be an HFS Scholars have Scholar and am truly grateful. matriculated to College

Daniel Shepherd 2012, Tom Ricketts, Christopher Ballenger, 2005 HFS Chicago Scholars was proud to welcome Tom Ricketts, the Executive Chairman of the Chicago Cubs, as our 2010 Leadership honoree. Mr. Ricketts and our student speakers spoke at our 4th annual Leadership Break- fast to over 300 guests at the Standard Club. Highlights include:

 Pedro Omar Gutierrez (HFS 2008), now a Northwestern University junior, spoke of the opportunity cre- ated and expectations set by HFS for him and his siblings. He noted that he is the first person in his family to attend college.

 Christopher Ballenger (HFS 2005), a recent graduate of Southern Illinois with a Computer Science/ Math degree, spoke of the influence of his HFS mentor on his success.

 Artis Lewis (HFS 2008), now a University of Chicago junior studying pre-med, thanked HFS for giving her family the opportunity to send her to a great high school and pushing her to be her best.

Mr. Ricketts immediately engaged the audience by speaking of his childhood and telling about the priority his parents placed on education. He spoke of his appreciation to his parents for saving in order to provide him a great education. He also compared the training of a baseball player with the educational opportunities given to our HFS scholars. Success in each case demands dedication, mentoring and nurturing. He lingered well after the program to speak to several of our scholars, who were thrilled by his words of advice.

FROM THE MENTOR BOARD PRESIDENT, DAVID BOCHENEK

HFS Chicago Scholars believes in a simple but highly successful three-part formula; combine great kids with a great education and great mentorship and they will be tremendously success- ful. The mentoring program is a cornerstone of HFS Chicago Scholars. We work to match every scholar in a one-on-one mentoring relationship with a young professional who wants to make a difference in a young person’s life. Mentors provide guidance, assistance and friend- ship to help our scholars better navigate the path to college and beyond. Mentors fill a void for many of our scholars who often have very few examples in their families or neighborhoods of people who have gone on to college.

I started mentoring with HFS because I was new to Chicago and I wanted to find a way to get involved in the community. As a consultant, mentoring with HFS was a great fit for me because I knew I could commit to one Saturday morning a month, and I could call my scholar from wherever I happened to be that week. Now three scholars and nine years later, I am so happy to consider myself part of the HFS family. I have personally drawn so much inspiration from how hard our scholars work to overcome the obstacles that life has placed between them and their goals. Whether it was helping with English homework, reviewing college essays or advising on financial aid packages; knowing that I have been able to play a tiny part in seeing Kelvin, Diego and soon Pablo graduate high school and sign that acceptance letter to a college is an incredible feeling.

Mentors and scholars meet as a group on Saturday mornings about once a month. In addition, mentors stay connected with their scholars regularly via phone or email. Becoming a mentor in the HFS Chicago Scholars program is one way to make a direct impact on a young person’s life. The HFS Mentor Board creates an organized structure for a great scholar – men- tor experience, but we depend on new volunteers to make that happen.

We hope that you chose to get involved by volunteering as a mentor. Everyone's involvement does make a difference! For more information: www.hfschicagoscholars.com

MY SCHOLAR MY FRIEND Tania Velazquez (left), Senior & Mentor April Gardner (Right)

My name is April Gardner and I have been an HFS Mentor since 2007. I am a Buyer in the Aero-space division at Castle Metals. Being a mentor has strengthened my coaching and leadership skills by having oppor- tunities to interact with teenagers of a different generation. Learning how to bridge this gap has helped in me in my daily work with individuals of different functional and cultural backgrounds. Being a part of this program has helped me to be- come a more influential professional and a stronger facilitator.

Tania Velazquez is an honor student at Mother McCauley High School and it has been an honor to mentor such a gifted and motivated student for four years. Tania and I have fostered a trusting bond through our interactions at HFS events. One of my favorites was the scavenger hunt at the Chicago History Museum. We used our creativity and analytical skills to navi- gate our way through the hunt. I learned about Tania's strengths, weaknesses and goals in a fun pressure free environment. We have also taken time to share elements of our personal lives. I have attended fund-raising events sponsored by her debate club and we also had the chance to let loose at a theatre performance of music and dance. Every year, Tania has become more and more confident and it has been a pleasure to watch her mature in her adolescent years. I am very proud of Tania and proud to call Tania and her parents my friends!
