This months contra I picked up at a local dance and couldn't resist finding a piece of music that would be suitable for Square Dancers. I found it and here's the dance, "Stars of Joy." I don't know the author so if anyone does I'll credit them in future articles. The dance is improper with 1, 3, 5, etc crossed over. One word of caution before the first movement. Always take a good look at your corner/neighbor! Intro; l's face down, 2's face up Al: COUPLES (4 hand) RIGHT HAND STAR -1- (8) Turn the star full around till the men are on their starting side. Ladies keep the star. I recommend a hands across star not the wrist star. MEN STEP OUT, LADIES CHAIN TO THEIR CORNER (8) The men roll out of the star to their left to end facing into the set. The ladies continue turning the star till they face their original corner/neighbor for the courtesy turn to face in. A2: LADIES LEAD RIGHT SHOULDER HEY (16) Ladies finish the hey facing the center of the set. Men wait in place on their own side. B1: LADIES STEP ACROSS & PARTNER SWING (16) The full 16 counts allows some extra time to finish the hey and then take 4 steps to cross and finish with an 8 count swing. Do not try to make the hey, ladies cross and swing fit exactly within the phrase of the music. The particular music allows this flow crossing the phrase without notice. B2:LADIES CHAIN ACROSS (8) With the couple across LEFT' HAND STAR -1- . Turn the star till the l's can look down and 2's look up toward the next couple in progression with whom to make the next 4 hand right hand star. Music for the dance is to be found on Blue Star 2453, "Im Sitting On Top Of The World." %

eptember is the start of fall and the start of school. This is the time to approach S the local school to see if they are willing to have a class on CW dancing for their students. Teaching students to dance is a very important social skill and will enhance most children's self-esteem. It is also a great time to start classes outside the school system for adults. The biggest obstacle is finding a hall in which you can teach. Many teach in Country Western bars, but many people do not want to go to these places to learn. We find it much better to hold classes in the Community Center or a church. Be sure you find a place with a parking lot that is well lit and safe. Have fun teaching non-dancers to dance. It is the greatest reward you can have in this activity. This months dance is:

FRANK LANE MILESTONE, 1981

A founding member of CALLERLAB, Frank started square dancing as a member of an exhibition group at Central High School, St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1939. Four years of journalism college and a war-time stint as a pilot in Italy with the 15th Air Force, interrupted the dancing, but by 1948, having been impressed by the pleasures that men and women derived, from square dancing, Frank decided this was the direction for him, and calling eventually became his full- Frank become a member of the Square time occupation. Can you believe that summer has come and gone already??? Where did the time go?? Before you know it, we will be back into the swing of fun nights, block parties and Saturday night dances. Just imagine closing off a section of your street and getting all the neighhbors together for a little cookout and square dance. It's a good way to introduce them to the best activity for fun, exercise and friendship .... Dancing!! Why not give it a try... Just walk right up to the friend who is a little hesitant and say "I'd Love To Dance With You." Don't be afraid, they won't say ... "There Goes The Neighborhood."
