Abstract: Plant diseases cause losses of approximately 16% globally. Thus, management measures must be implemented to mitigate losses and guarantee food production. In addition to traditional management measures, induced resistance and biological control have gained ground in agriculture due to their enormous potential. Endophytic fungi internally colonize plant tissues and have the potential to act as control agents, such as biological agents or elicitors in the process of induced resistance and in attenuating abiotic stresses. Abdel – Azeem Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, University of Suez *Corresponding author: e-mail: Canal, Ismailia 41522, Egypt [email protected] Received 26/6/2010, Accepted 6/4 /2011 ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Abstract: By screening of available sources of information, it was possible to figure out a range of 310 taxa that could be representing Egyptian Ascomycota up to the present time. In this treatment, concern was given to ascomycetous fungi of almost all terricolous substrates while phytopathogenic and aquatic forms are not included. According to the scheme proposed by Kirk et al. (2008), reported taxa in Egypt belonged to 88 genera in 31 families, and 11 orders. In view of this scheme, very few numbers of taxa remained without certain taxonomic position (incertae sedis). It is also worthy to be mentioned that among species included in the list, twenty-eight are introduced to the ascosporic mycobiota as novel taxa based on type materials collected from Egyptian habitats. The list includes also 19 species which are considered new records to the general mycobiota of Egypt. When species richness and substrate preference, as important ecological parameters, are considered, it has been noticed that Egyptian Ascomycota shows some interesting features noteworthy to be mentioned. At the substrate level, clay soils, came first by hosting a range of 108 taxa followed by desert soils (60 taxa). -

Lists of names in Aspergillus and teleomorphs as proposed by Pitt and Taylor, Mycologia, 106: 1051-1062, 2014 (doi: 10.3852/14-060), based on retypification of Aspergillus with A. niger as type species John I. Pitt and John W. Taylor, CSIRO Food and Nutrition, North Ryde, NSW 2113, Australia and Dept of Plant and Microbial Biology, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720-3102, USA Preamble The lists below set out the nomenclature of Aspergillus and its teleomorphs as they would become on acceptance of a proposal published by Pitt and Taylor (2014) to change the type species of Aspergillus from A. glaucus to A. niger. The central points of the proposal by Pitt and Taylor (2014) are that retypification of Aspergillus on A. niger will make the classification of fungi with Aspergillus anamorphs: i) reflect the great phenotypic diversity in sexual morphology, physiology and ecology of the clades whose species have Aspergillus anamorphs; ii) respect the phylogenetic relationship of these clades to each other and to Penicillium; and iii) preserve the name Aspergillus for the clade that contains the greatest number of economically important species. Specifically, of the 11 teleomorph genera associated with Aspergillus anamorphs, the proposal of Pitt and Taylor (2014) maintains the three major teleomorph genera – Eurotium, Neosartorya and Emericella – together with Chaetosartorya, Hemicarpenteles, Sclerocleista and Warcupiella. Aspergillus is maintained for the important species used industrially and for manufacture of fermented foods, together with all species producing major mycotoxins. The teleomorph genera Fennellia, Petromyces, Neocarpenteles and Neopetromyces are synonymised with Aspergillus. The lists below are based on the List of “Names in Current Use” developed by Pitt and Samson (1993) and those listed in MycoBank (www.MycoBank.org), plus extensive scrutiny of papers publishing new species of Aspergillus and associated teleomorph genera as collected in Index of Fungi (1992-2104). -

THE EFFECT OF OCTOPUS PREDATION ON A SPONGE-SCALLOP ASSOCIATION Thomas J. Ewing , Kirt L. Onthank and David L. Cowles Walla Walla University Department of Biological Sciences ABSTRACT In the Puget Sound the scallop Chlamys hastata is often found with its valves encrusted with sponges. Scallops have been thought to benefit from this association by protection from sea star predation, but this idea has not been well supported by empirical evidence. Scallops have a highly effective swimming escape response and are rarely found to fall prey to sea stars in the field. Consequently, a clear benefit to the scallop to preserve the relationship is lacking. We propose that octopuses could provide the predation pressure to maintain this relationship. Two condi- tions must first be met for this hypothesis to be supported: 1) Octopuses eat a large quantity of scallops and 2) Octo- puses must be less likely to consume scallops encrusted with sponges than unencrusted scallops. We found that Chlamys hastata may comprise as much as one-third of the diet of giant Pacific octopus (Enteroctopus dofleini) and that E. dofleini is over twice as likely to choose an unencrusted scallop over an encrusted one. While scallops are a smaller portion of the diet of O. rubescens this species is five times as likely to consume scallops without sponge than those with. This provides evidence the octopuses may provide the adaptive pressure that maintains the scallop -sponge symbiosis. INTRODUCTION The two most common species of scallop in the Puget Sound and Salish Sea area of Washington State are Chlamys hastata and Chlamys rubida. -

La ocratoxina A (OTA) se considera uno de los principales problemas emergentes en la industria del café, dado que el proceso de tostado no asegura su destrucción total. El objetivo de este estudio fue identificar las especies fúngicas productoras de OTA en café tostado de Nayarit, así como evaluar el efecto de plasma frío en la inhibición de esporas de hongos micotoxigénicos, detoxificación de OTA, así como en algunos parámetros de calidad del café. Se aislaron e identificaron hongos micotoxigénicos mediante claves dicotómicas, después se analizó la producción de OTA y aflatoxinas (AFB1, AFB2, AFG2, AFG1) por HPLC con detector de fluorescencia. Las cepas productoras de toxinas se identificaron por PCR utilizando los primers ITS1 e ITS4. Después se aplicó plasma frío en muestras de café tostado inoculadas con hongos micotoxigénicos (A. westerdijikiae, A. steynii, A. niger y A. versicolor) a diferentes tiempos 0, 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 y 18 min, con una potencia de entrada 30 W y un voltaje de salida de 850 voltios y helio publicitario (1.5 L/min). -

Agarkar Road, Pune - 411 004, India; corresponding author e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: A new species, Gymnoascus verrucosus sp. nov., isolated from soil from Kalyan railway station, Key words: Maharashtra, India, is described and illustrated. The distinctive morphological features of this taxon are its 28S verruculose ascospores (ornamentation visible only under SEM) and its deer antler-shaped short peridial 18S appendages. The small peridial appendages originate from open mesh-like gymnothecial ascomata made up echinulate ascospores of thick-walled, smooth peridial hyphae. The characteristic morphology of the fungus is not formed in culture Gymnoascaceae where it has very restricted growth and forms arthroconidia. Phylogenetic analysis of different rDNA gene ITS sequences (ITS, LSU, and SSU) demonstrates its placement in Gymnoascaceae and reveal its phylogenetic Onygenales relatedness to other species of Gymnoascus, especially G. petalosporus and G. boliviensis. The generic concept phylogeny of Gymnoascus is consequently now broadened to include species with verruculose ascospores. A key to the accepted 19 species is also provided.
