    Homer Economicus: Using The Simpsons to Teach Economics Joshua Hall* West Virginia University Getting students to understand the economic way of thinking might be the most difficult aspect of a teaching economist=s job. The counterintuitive nature of economics often makes it difficult to get the average student to think Alike an economist.@ To this end, the need to keep students engaged and interested is essential when teaching economic principles and interdisciplinary approaches to engaging students are becoming increasingly common. For example, Leet and Houser (2003) build an entire principles class around classic films and documentaries while Watts (1999) discusses how literary passages can be used to teach a typical undergraduate course more effectively. I further extend this interdisciplinary approach to economic education by providing examples from the long-running animated television show The Simpsons that can be used to stimulate student discussion and engagement in an introductory course in microeconomics. Using The Simpsons in the classroom The bulk of this paper describes scenes from The Simpsons that illustrate basic economic concepts. While the examples are pretty straightforward, the difficulty in using The Simpsons lies in deciding: where to place the examples into the lecture and the best way to present the scene to the students. _____________________________ * The author gratefully acknowledges the financial support of The Buckeye Institute. This paper investigates the relationship between market competition and program type diversity in the over-the-air television industry. Specifically, market competition is divided into intra-network competition and intra-media competition, i.e. terrestrial television vs. cable TV. Also this paper uses a comprehensive model of program types, with 281 program type categories, which have never been used in previous studies. The results show that program type diversity keeps decreasing over time and intra-network competition has a negative effect on program type diversity. Also, intra- network competition is a more important factor on program type diversity than inter- media competition.

    OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY OF STATE ELECTIONS DIVISION Directive of the Subject: Directive Issued at Date: Number: Secretary of State the Request of: 2016 Statutory Hand Secretary of State November 14, 2016 2016-3 Count of Ballots The Secretary of State in carrying out the duties of the office shall issue detailed directives necessary to maintain uniformity in the application, operation and interpretation of Oregon election laws. (ORS 246.110 & 120). The information provided here is an official directive of the Secretary of State. ORS 254.529 requires County Elections Officials, after each general election, to hand count a percentage of ballots and compare the hand counted tally of votes to the tally produced by the vote tally system for the same ballots. This directive provides instruction on how to conduct the hand count of ballots cast at the November 8, 2016, General Election.
