Gilboy University of Hull 201108684 Abstract (Thesis Summary) The objective of this thesis is to establish meme theory as an analytical paradigm within the fields of screen and fan studies. Meme theory is an emerging framework founded upon the broad concept of a “meme”, a unit of culture that, if successful, proliferates among a given group of people. Created as a cultural analogue to genetics, memetics has developed into a cultural theory and, as the concept of memes is increasingly applied to online behaviours and activities, its relevance to the area of media studies materialises. The landscapes of media production and spectatorship are in constant fluctuation in response to rapid technological progress. The internet provides global citizens with unprecedented access to media texts (and their producers), information, and other individuals and collectives who share similar knowledge and interests. The unprecedented speed with (and extent to) which information and media content spread among individuals and communities warrants the consideration of a modern analytical paradigm that can accommodate and keep up with developments. Meme theory fills this gap as it is compatible with existing frameworks and offers researchers a new perspective on the factors driving the popularity and spread (or lack of popular engagement with) a given media text and its audience. -

The Simpsons' Waylon Smithers
The Simpsons’ Waylon Smithers Introducing the Character Waylon Smithers Jr. is an animated character and one of the “regular” cast members of the long-running Fox network’s cartoon for adults The Simpsons. The show, which recently entered its fourth decade, is a comedy and parody that takes a satirical look at American society and Western cultural values. Waylon Smithers Jr. is the personal assistant to Mr. Montgomery Burns, the chief executive officer (CEO) of the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant. Cast as Mr. Burns’s selfless, self-effacing, and dedicated assistant, Smithers, as he is referred to on the show, is a gay man who has not let his sexual identity become known to others on the show. He secretly fantasizes about sexual trysts with his boss and even has a pop-up screen saver on his computer that contains a naked image of Mr. Burns that says “Hello Smithers, you’re quite good at turning me on.” Smithers is often the butt of jokes by others at the power plant, most notoriously Homer Simpson, who has long suspected Smithers of being gay. Smithers continually ingratiates himself to Mr. Burns—a deeply narcissistic and sadistic employer and person who may at some level know of Smithers’s interest in him and who takes advantage of him at all turns. Trump, although foretold by Matt Groening’s The Simpsons,1 was a surprise to many.2 But the shock, disbelief, and horror were especially acute for the intelligentsia. They were told, guaranteed really, that there was no way for Trump to win. Yet he prevailed, pulling off what poker aficionados might call a back- door draw in the Electoral College. Since his victory, the reverberations, commotions, and uproars have never ended. Some of these were Trump’s own doing and some were hyped-up controversies. We have endured so many bombshells and pur- ported bombshells that most of us are numb. As one crisis or scandal sputters to a pathetic end, the next has already commenced. There has been too much fear, rage, fire, and fury, rendering it impossible for many to make sense of it all. Some Americans sensibly tuned out, missing the breathless nightly reports of how the latest scandal would doom Trump or why his tormentors would soon get their comeuppance. Nonetheless, our reality TV President is ratings gold for our political talk shows. In his Foreword, Professor Michael Klarman, one of America’s fore- most legal historians, speaks of a degrading democracy.3 Many difficulties plague our nation: racial and class divisions, a spiraling debt, runaway entitlements, forever wars, and, of course, the coronavirus. Associate Professor “KID POWER!’”: THE SUBVERSIVE AGENCY OF CHILDREN IN ADULT ANIMATED SITCOMS Carly Toepfer San Francisco, California 2015 In my thesis, using contemporary feminist analyses about children, obedience, the nuclear family, and media influence, I theorize the representations of children in adult animated sitcoms. I argue that these television shows are ripe with representations of children subverting adult actions and beliefs through their own agency and rebellion, which they enact in two main ways: through sibling relationships and friendship/peer groups. Using episodes of both The Simpsons and Bob's Burgers, I analyze what these shows reveal about the agency of children and argue that these characteristics are not written merely into individual characters, but are an innate part of childhood in these shows. is a correct representation of the content of this thesis. Homer Economicus: Using The Simpsons to Teach Economics Joshua Hall* West Virginia University Getting students to understand the economic way of thinking might be the most difficult aspect of a teaching economist=s job. The counterintuitive nature of economics often makes it difficult to get the average student to think Alike an economist.@ To this end, the need to keep students engaged and interested is essential when teaching economic principles and interdisciplinary approaches to engaging students are becoming increasingly common. For example, Leet and Houser (2003) build an entire principles class around classic films and documentaries while Watts (1999) discusses how literary passages can be used to teach a typical undergraduate course more effectively. I further extend this interdisciplinary approach to economic education by providing examples from the long-running animated television show The Simpsons that can be used to stimulate student discussion and engagement in an introductory course in microeconomics. Using The Simpsons in the classroom The bulk of this paper describes scenes from The Simpsons that illustrate basic economic concepts. While the examples are pretty straightforward, the difficulty in using The Simpsons lies in deciding: where to place the examples into the lecture and the best way to present the scene to the students. _____________________________ * The author gratefully acknowledges the financial support of The Buckeye Institute. The mother bird carefully gathers any materials that she may weave together to build a home for her babies, and then she meticulously constructs the nest piece by piece to make it strong and resilient. Although the basic construction of most nests is similar, each bird constructs their nest with creativity - gathering whatever materials they may find, whether they be pieces of yarn, fabric, or even trash. Although each nest serves the same basic purpose, each nest is unique and different. Just as the mother bird builds her nest with great care, determination and perseverance, we, as social work- ers, steadfastly and adamantly work to build up our clients. We also come alongside our clients to assist them in securing safety, to cheer them on as they grow into their strengths, and to help them tap into their resiliency admist difficult life circumstances. Although this aspect of social work and the client-centered relationship is foundational for all of us, each of us possess a unique practice that is influenced by our per- sonal experiences, perspectives and creative touch. We each bring something different to the profession of social work. Our hope is that this journal can provide a forum for sharing our views on social justice. -

ABSTRACT In this study, the opening sequence part of “The Simpsons” cartoon examined according to creation of meaning by using semiology. The time period of this part is approximately seventy-five seconds and all shots were examined according to their relation between ideology and its sub meanings. The aim of this project is to bring out that an animated cartoon which is created for children can contain several sub-meanings and symbols which can shape the judgements of adults which are classified in different age groups, in seventy-five seconds time period. As a result, “The Simpsons” cartoon, try to impress viewers by using similar characteristics in its scenes and give a message that “we are all the same” and also by using symbols and sub-meanings some issues such as production and consumption balance, place of the women in society, and standardized community were also try to create in the adults mind.
