The London School of Economics and Political Science Civilian Control of the Military in Portugal and Spain: a Policy Instruments Approach José Javier Olivas Osuna A thesis submitted to the Department of Government of the London School of Economics for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, London, March 2012 Declaration I certify that the thesis I have presented for examination for the MPhil/PhD degree of the London School of Economics and Political Science is solely my own work. e copyright of this thesis rests with the author. Quotation from it is permitted, provided that full acknowledgement is made. is thesis may not be reproduced without my prior written consent. I warrant that this authorisation does not, to the best of my belief, infringe the rights of any third party. I declare that my thesis consists of words. Abstract Despite their economic, political and cultural similarities, Portugal and Spain experienced dif- ferent trajectories of civil-military relations during the twentieth century. After having handed power over to a civilian dictator, Salazar, the Portuguese military eventually caused the down- fall of his authoritarian Estado Novo regime and led the transition to democracy. In contrast, in Spain the military, which had helped Franco to defeat the Republic in remained loyal to the dictatorship’s principles and, after his death, obstructed the democratisation process. is research sheds light on these different patterns by comparing the policy instruments that governments used to control the military throughout Portuguese and Spanish dictatorships and transitions to democracy. First, it applies Christopher Hood’s () ‘’ (nodality, authority, treasure and organisation) framework for the study of tools of government in order to identify trajectories and establish comparisons across time and countries.

The idea behind the special issue comes from this consideration: around the world, individuals are facing a critical moment, the COVID- 19 pandemic and its consequences require some reflections on many topics, often forgotten by scholars. This is the reason why many Italian and foreign scholars have been invited to give their contribution. Further- more, now more than ever, it is crucial to share knowledge coming from multiple disciplines and that’s why it was decided to write an entire issue in English. For scientific and intellectual correctness, the contents of single articles refer to the situation as in mid-May 2020. It is necessary to clarify that because this Special issue was published when many countries were start- ing to reduce their emergency measures to cope with the pandemic. We, the European Union. Teresa Winthuysen Alexander iii Javier de Winthuysen—terracotta likeness, circa 1919 was done by his friend, the sculptor Jacinto Higueras Fuentes (1977-1956) Javier de Winthuysen dedicated his self-portrait which appears on the front book cover to his good friends Lolita Palatin and Jacinto Higueras. iv “Portraits and sentimental caricatures from assorted Spaniards” Juan Ramón Jimenez Javier de Winthuysen 1920 New wild bear variety, he is a bear-gardener (blond, sentimental, with a sense of humor); he is a drinker of fountains and eater of jasmine flowers soaked in anise liqueur. Eternally learning to speak cub bear language at the cavern woods’ school, perdurable child and still (like the even-now impacted wisdom teeth) has not grown his second eyes. With these paradise-like primary eyes entangled like light violets among the green eyelashes, I say he looks and looks again at our eloquent, fine, true Andalusian countryside, and finally, foretelling its color, he renders it.

  • SHABTAI TZVI, LABOR ZIONISM and the HOLOCAUST by Barry Chamish
SHABTAI TZVI, LABOR ZIONISM AND THE HOLOCAUST by Barry Chamish CHAPTER ONE – DESTROYING YESHA ALM 1 - NAMING THE YESHA SPIES Poor deluded Israelis believe that the current moment of justice, when the government actually has freed the army to arrest their murderers, is a lasting trend. They will soon learn that the Oslo game is just on brief hold and the real goal of intimidating the Jewish residents of Yesha from their homes is merely on the backburner. Admittedly, the more perceptive see the signs. Two more Yesha rabbis have been murdered in the past month, Shapira and Dickstein, upping the total to about an even dozen in the past four years. And there is no denying that the murder of Rabbi Eliahu Shapira of Peduel wasn’t random terrorism. He was ambushed by a highly trained hit squad which possessed exact intelligence about his whereabouts. And another Arab girls’ school was bombed without deaths and again Jewish settler “extremists” were blamed. These same “extremists” blamed for similar school bombs in East Jerusalem and Tzur Bahr don’t exist. They are the creation of a group of Shabak officers, working hand in hand with the CIA and PLO, to remove Israel and its citizens from Yesha. And guess who the Israeli behind the plot is? Read on: CIA begins training Palestinian officers By Amira Hass, Ha’aretz 17 September 2002 “A training course for Palestinian Authority security officers got underway yesterday in Jericho. The course is being run by a team of security experts from the Central Intelligence Agency, Jordan and Egypt, and is taking place at the Intercontinental Hotel in Jericho.

  • Visita Al Complejo De La Moncloa Sede De La Presidencia Del Gobierno De España
