Heaner" reads the April 24, 1980 issue of The Rice Thresher, which holds the distinction of handing out the first-ever Sammy awards. Thirty years later, the voting format and awards categories have evolved somewhat (not to mention PricewaterhouseCoopers no longer handles the voting results), but the original spirit and purpose of the Sammys has remained unchanged: "To honor those members of the Rice Community who have excelled in the theatrical arts ... None of the winners will be blessed with either gold statuettes or national television exposure, but the sense of achievement and reward should still be there, nonetheless." Voting was open to the entire stu- dent body and more than 600 votes were tallied — three times more than those cast last year. So now, in that same spirit of "pride and commendation" as the original Sammys, the Thresher is pleased to present the win- ners of the 2010 Sammy Awards. FRESHMAN SEMINARS FALL 2010 What is a freshman seminar, and why should you take one? A freshman seminar is a class specifically designed to give first-year students an introduction to the humanities. Each course has a limit of 15 students who will be seated around a table in an intimate setting primed for lively, interactive discussion. There are no lectures in freshman seminars; rather, they consist of active conversations among students and faculty. Freshman seminars provide an environment of inquiry, a structured opportunity for encountering exciting ideas and learning how to articulate responses to them. Freshman seminars cover a wide range of humanities topics, all at an introductory level. They are a great way for new students to get to know a professor, develop an intellectual community with their peers, and learn important skills in a structured and stimulating educational environment.

Is that still not enough to entice you? How about the fact that all freshman seminars receive a D1 credit and are open only to first year students?

Check out Fall 2010's freshman seminar offerings and decide which course is going to be your exciting and rewarding introduction to the Humanities and a lifetime of learning.
