Artist Statement – Clare Whitney

Opposite attractions inspire my daily workings.

Something old with something new, something handmade with something found.

I am the silent observer of all things, colour, form, movement, sound and touch,

I strive to create a constant thread between the past, present and future, within my images.

I love nothing more than lying down and looking straight up into the patterns of the clouds, treetops and grasses and getting visually lost in nature’s kaleidoscope of colours and patterns.

Living in Thornbury, I have had my studio in the heart of Melbourne for the past 8 years, my inspiration is found anywhere from my local streets and parklands to the ocean and bush land both in Australia and abroad, whereever I am ….I am observing and inspired.

Local endangered species’, the human figure and symbolic shapes are captured and introduce onto old maps, music sheets and pages of text.

Working within the boundaries of these collected backgrounds, endangered species are printed onto old collected maps significant to where they live whilst music sheets have common songbirds dancing across their notes; I try to create an everlasting relationship between the two.

Winged things have always interested me from flying ants, precious beetles and endangered birds all the way to the ancient winged gods, the detail of nature’s mechanics and humankinds’ imagination is particularly visually fascinating to me.

I am most inspired by the role Nature has played throughout history’s story telling through mythology, fairytales, dreamtime and symbology both environmentally and historically.

I love a good second hand store, garage sale or market to pour over for ideas and see history and fashion, patterns and designs all sprawled out on a trestle table, they are tiny visual collections of a strangers personal belongings and past, laid out for you to see, touch, converse, remember even purchase to live another day. 1

One’s personal passing on of their stories…

I want to put life back into the old music sheets, discarded maps and text books, take it off the shelf and put it up onto the wall for all to see with new eyes.

I find these beautiful creations of mans original forms of communication the perfect relationship for my drypoint images to marry...everlastingly....

Bio

Clare Whitney studied Fine Art at The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, 19911993, R.M.I.T, where she majored in painting.

Since completing her degree in 1994, she has travelled, lived and worked over the years in Western Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan and Fiji.

Throughout her travels Clare set up working studios and taught painting in local schools and community groups, from very young children to adults.

These experiences allowed her the opportunity to express and exhibit her own artworks both interstate and abroad. Influenced by her immediate environment and personal experience; the landscape, human figure, and organic forms are captured and translated through rich colours and symbolic shapes on canvas and paper.

Images of insects, birds and fish represent other ‘worlds’ that coexist alongside mankind. Clare’s images illustrate the ideal of man/woman becoming one with these ‘worlds’ once again.

Clare Whitney now resides in Melbourne and works from her studio in the heart of the city.

Dedicating herself full time to her art, she continues to create and exhibit recent works from her studio and galleries throughout Melbourne.

Gecko News ● Sue Gilford’s drawing classes are held in our studio at Gecko Studio Gallery between 9.30 and 12.30 and 1.30 to 4.30 Mondays. The classes are for beginners through to established artists who want to push themselves a little and find new ways of approaching their art. Sessions are $40. Easels are provided, and an extensive range of drawing equipment, materials and papers are available through Gecko Studio Gallery at 10% off retail (a discount available to all members of local art groups and classes), or you can bring your own materials. Bookings are essential due to class size. Contact Sue on 5688 1550. ● Kerry and I were in Horsham last week visiting our friend Lynne Quick in nearby Natimuk. We met a friend of Lynne’s; Marian Anderson of Red Rock Bookshop and Gallery. Marian has been a printmaker for over thirty years. Her bookshop and gallery features some fantastic books (lots of art especially artist books and printmaking) and her gallery space at the back of the bookshop showcases local artists. If you are up that way drop in, say hello to Marian and mention you read about her in this newsletter. I should say she also has a wicked sense of humour. Buy a book or artwork while you are there. http://redrockbooksngallery.com.au/ We also went to Mount Zero between Horsham and Natimuk (no idea why it is named Mt Zero – nothing on the internet I could find) and went to the café there, part of a large olive growing business. Great café, fine produce and fascinating plants and animals (lots of roos among the olive trees). John Mutsaers was born in Eindhoven, the Netherlands in 1942, and arrived in Melbourne in 1956 aged thirteen. For most of this year John will be travelling to various parts of Gippsland to paint the character and personality of gardens in the region. In partnership with Gippsland Country Life magazine and Town and Country Gallery in Yarragon, John will mount an exhibition in October called, “The Painted Gardens of Gippsland”. He will depict on canvas some of the gardens previously featured in the magazine plus others he has been invited to visit. The paintings will be shown at the gallery as part of the, “Gardivalia Festival”. Sat 6 Sun 28 October. Email [email protected] 10 5 Daily. 111 Princes Highway, Yarragon. Ph: 5634 2229. The playful paintings of Queenslandbased artist Victoria Reichelt linger somewhere between geometric abstraction and hyperrealism. In Catalogue Reichelt presents new and recent works from her Spectrum series to explore book spines and library shelves as sources of unexpected aesthetic delight. The works consider the motivation behind the collecting impulse to form a colourful essay on our love of books. 8 September to 4 November.

● The 2012 John Leslie Art Prize. The John Leslie Prize is one of Australia’s most prestigious prizes for landscape painting, and consistently attracts the highest calibre of artists working in Australia. In 2012 the Prize is offered in four award categories totalling $20,000 in prize money, made possible by the generous support of the Gallery’s Patron John Leslie OBE. 29 September to 25 November. ● The Inconvenience of Change Michael Georgetti . 13 October to 25 November. A certain shambolic quality takes hold in the kinetic (moving) artworks of Michael Georgetti. A combination of painting, sculpture and commonplace objects are used to build precarious structures that examine the absurd nature of humanity’s relationship with machines. These strange structures have a temporal quality to express human failure. Opening and artist talk Friday 12 October. ● The Rapture of Death Andrew Browne, Adam Cullen, Julia DeVille, Juan Ford, Anne Judell, Sam Leach, Ben Quilty, Kate Rhode, Ex DeMedici, V.R. Morrison, Ricky Swallow, Michael Zavros, and others . 10 November to 20 January. The Rapture of Death is the experience of delight upon escaping grave danger, writes Prue Gibson. It offers the sweet knowledge that you are safe, at least for the moment, from the clutches of darkness. And it is a phrase which refers to the fear or apprehension of death, rather than the actual experience of dying. Based on the book of the same name by Prue Gibson (Published by Boccalatte Pty Ltd), The Rapture of Death features major works by some of Australia’s leading artists. Like the book, this unusual exhibition is a philosophical enquiry into the use of deathly imagery in contemporary art, and investigates why fear of death is an intrinsic part of life. Opening: Friday 30 November 6.00pm. To be opened by Prue Gibson, Author, The Rapture of Death ● Port of Sale Civic Centre 6870 Foster St, Sale. Ph 5142 3372. Open weekdays 10 – 5pm. Sat & Sun 12 – 4pm. www.wellington.vic.gov.au/gallery. Free entry. Maffra Exhibition Space ● Seen in the Light. Light in the Box. 14 September to 27 October. Participating Artists: MichelleDeb Armstrong, Ellen Burton, John Butler, Philip Cappadona, Di Deppeler, Don Dickie, Marcus Foley, Rhonda Gray, Kellie Hancock, Jeni Irwin, Josephine Jakobi, Daniel Jenkins, Ian Keegan, Jan Learmonth, Robert Logie, Annie Marshall, John McKenzie, Joyce Nowrungsah, Jason Parmington, Vanessa Power, Anna Roberts, Kate Shone, Wilma Ross, Dore Stockhausen, Mary Sullivan, Eileen Thurgood, Bev Wilkin, Jerry Williams and Gary Yelen. This exhibition of 29 black boxes is an East Gippsland Art Gallery touring exhibition. Seen in the Light was East Gippsland Art Gallery's contribution to the Creative Gippsland month of May celebrations. The project involved 2 parts; Light Graffiti – an exhibition that invited secondary school students to ‘draw with light’ and Light in a Box – artworks by local artists. Light in a Box invited 29 artists to create a piece in a 20x20x25cm box – the work only visible when viewed through a security lens and illuminated by a small light activated by the viewer. The result is a fascinating collection of miniature installations, each containing a unique creation. ● Maffra Secondary College VCE Graduate Exhibition. 2 November to 17 November. Visit the Cbus Gallery at Latrobe Regional Gallery during winter and enjoy a selection of figurative works from the Cbus Collection of Australian Art. Artists include Jessie Trail, Jean Bellette, Norman Lindsay, Bernard Hall and John Brack. ● Alexandra Sassé Regarding the Face . International Power Hazelwood Community Access Gallery. 22 September – 21 October. Alexandra Sassé is influenced by the expressiveness of German Expressionism, Byzantine icon painting and the French Fauve movement, as well as Byzantine icon painting in her recent portraits. Sasse’s painted heads are worked from life from a select circle of models including friends and associates. Her aim is neither to reproduce reality nor to delineate a character. According to Sassé, she “is not heading the picture towards a truth already grasped, but responding to something unfolding. This is something ambiguous, as would be expected in work which is created over time, not in a moment – the state of sitter and artist is not a fixed reference.” ● Julia Robinson Some to the Stone. 1 September – 4 November. Superstition features prominently throughout history in all cultures, as humans have long attached significance to items and rituals that can logically have no real power of their own. The exhibition Some to the stone explores a number of lesser known superstitions originating in Europe and Scandinavia. The work interprets the homespun solutions to the perceived threat of witchcraft through a simple, domestic aesthetic that draws on traditional techniques such as stitching, woodcarving and pottery. In examining the historical practice of superstition, Robinson tries to make sense of that complex human need to trust things beyond our power, to take meaning from nothingness and find comfort in language, ritual and gesture. Julia Robinson is represented by Anna Pappas Gallery. ● Made to Last A NETS Victoria Touring Exhibition in partnership with the Centre for Cultural Materials

Conservation and supported by LaTrobe Regional Gallery. Curated by Sherry Vardy. 12 September – 28 October. Contemporary artists use traditional, modern and sometimes unconventional materials for a variety of reasons; the materials are integral to their conceptual practice, workable or readily available. Made to Last highlights the significance of the artist's original intent to assist in the long term preservation of their practice. This exhibition explores investigative methods of conservation including the behaviour of materials over time and techniques used to preserve and document work for the future. Artists include Brook Andrew, Penny Byrne, Juan Ford, Ghostpatrol and Claire Anna Watson. ● Living Traditions: the Art of the Belief . A National Gallery of Victoria Touring Exhibition. 3 November – 13 January 2013. This exhibition draws upon diverse material from across all areas of the NGV’s rich collections to explore a range of living religious traditions found in the Australian community today. Many works of art rarely exhibited before, dating from the medieval period through to the contemporary, will look afresh at religious practice and belief as seen through the eyes of artists past and present. Manuscripts of sacred texts, ritual vestments, objects employed in worship and images of divinities will reveal the rich diversity and common threads of spiritual practice and belief in contemporary Australia. ● Insight The Hermansburg Potters Collection of the Moreton Bay Region. 10 November – 20 January 2013. Insight is a travelling exhibition developed by Moreton Bay Regional Council and Simon Turner, toured by Museum and Gallery Services Queensland. The Aranda people from Hermannsburg, a former Lutheran mission about 130km west of Alice Springs, are generally known for their Namatjira style watercolours. Since 1980, the Hermannsburg Potters have been producing a vibrant and highly original form of ceramic art that draws on many influences yet strongly reflects the distinctive visual culture of the region. The potters embrace yet reinterpret all these influences and traditions in their own painted ceramics. The collection features works by Irene Mbitjana Entata, Carol Panangka Rontji, Judith Pungkarta Inkamala, Clara Ngala Inkamala, Ester Ngala Kennedy, Lindy Panangka Rontji, Rona Panangka Rubuntja, Dawn Ngala Wheeler and Rahel Kngwarria Ungwanaka. ● Opening hours: Mon to Fri 10am to 5pm, Sat & Sun 11am to 4pm. Known for his thrilling celloplaying that incorporates new techniques to create a unique mix of folk, bluegrass, jazz and R&B, Sollee possesses roughsmoothsmoky vocal stylings and a knack for intricate arrangements that has brought about comparisons to Sufjan Stevens. Sollee shares himself completely with his audience, whether it be by personal lyrics, or his commitment to the environment. Sollee can often be found riding a bicycle to his concerts (cello strapped to the back), which have become legendary for their intimacy. Mossvale Park ‘Summer Of Soul’ . Sunday 6th January, 2013. The day will feature some of the best Soul and music around with a dash of Blues and a touch of Surf Rock. A mix sure to inspire lots of foot tapping and dancing when not lazing or strolling in the beautiful surrounds of Mossvale Park. ● and the DapKings (USA) Sharon Jones and her 9 piece band, the DapKings have ventured to Australia before, to perform at Byron Bays Blues Festival and WOMAD. In 2013 they are coming to Australia to headline at the Sydney Festival and we are thrilled that they are venturing down to South Gippsland to headline Mossvale Park ‘Summer of Soul’. Sharon Jones & the DapKings are a celebration of, and a testament to, the soulful and beautiful possibilities of music. As distinguished as their recordings may be, Sharon Jones & the DapKings have become truly renowned thanks to their incredible live show and relentless touring. Although it’s no easy task to keep such a vast ensemble on the road, the band continues to pack hundreds of clubs worldwide, including two consecutive sold out shows last year at New York’s legendary Apollo Theatre, a historical evening at Celebrate Brooklyn! at the Prospect Park Band Shell that brought a reported crowd of nearly 20,000 people and showstopping sets at SXSW, Coachella, Lollapalooza, Roskilde, Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, North Sea Jazz Festival, and WOMAD. Most recently, the band has been invited by fellow soul enthusiast, Prince, to open for him at his shows in New York City, Paris, and Ghent. Sharon’s newest CD, ‘I Learned The Hard Way ‘was produced by and recorded in its entirety on an old Ampex eighttrack tape machine at ’ “House of Soul Studios.” The record drips with warmth and spontaneity rarely found since the golden days of Muscle Shoals and . Ms. Jones’s voice, never stronger, evokes at once the raw power of , the moaning soulfulness of , the rhythmic swagger of , and the melodic command of Aretha Franklin. From the lush Phillysoul fanfare that ushers in the top of the with “The Game Gets Old,” to the stripped down Sam Cooke style that closes it with “Mama Don’t Like My Man,” the band dances seamlessly through the most simple, crafted arrangements with subtlety and discipline. This is the “Daptone Sound” at its finest and is a welcome breath of fresh air. ● Los Coronas (Spain) Los Coronas are a pioneering instrosurf group from Spain. From their beginnings, in 1991, they have grown from being under the shade of the most purist instrumental surf to reinventing a genre that proves to be more alive than ever. Departing from a sound that feeds directly of the primitive and original instrumental rock of the 50's and 60's, Los Coronas make a revision of the Spaghetti westerns essence, the rides of Curro Jiménez a fiction legendary Spanish bandit of 19th Century or the Don Brown's surf documentaries. In this way they revisit and renovate a genre, the instrumental Surf, which they know well, where they have grown, a genre that they have been claiming for since their beginnings in 1991. Once the lesson has been well learnt, they have decided to contribute with their own vision, in which their personal experience has become their main influence. It's a vision where the sands of the Californian beaches join with those of the desert, achieving this way a borderline surf loaded with southern touches and with echoes of the trumpets of “El Degüello” in the siege of The Alamo. In an odd appropriation of the musical essence of Mexico or the South of the USA, 10

Los Coronas assimilate, reinterpret and adapt it as its own. ● Clairy Brown & the Bangin’ Rackettes This nine piece ensemble have been making a splash at home and internationally with their original take on soul, jump blues, doowop, ska and r’n’b. Clairy Browne and her harmonizing girl gang the Bangin’ Rackettes have earned a reputation for their dynamic live show which is an experience from start to finish, created with the intention of taking their audience to another place complete with all the heightened hysteria of 1960’s music TV. As a journalist recently put it: “To label the show a ‘gig’ is a huge injustice to the whole production. While the spectacle is electrifying, the spine of the group is Browne. She’s warm, ballsy, with an enormous voice that could move mountains.” Madeleine O’Gorman, The Music.com.au ● Chris Wilson Chris Wilson has been an essential part of the rock & scene in Australia since taking the stage with the Sole Twisters over 20 yrs ago. Stints with Harum Scarum and Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls followed, and by the end of the 80s, Chris was renowned as one of the finest vocalists, harmonica players and songwriters, fronting the superb Crown of Thorns. Chris has appeared at every major Australian festival and his performances, filled as they are with his own brand of sensuality and the dynamic power that leaves his audiences so satisfied, are always a highlight. Chris’ stage presence, voice and talent are all as big as the country he lives in. Chris Wilson is a master of his craft. ● Saskwatch Freshly back in the country from a run of shows at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival Spiegeltent, 2012 continues to be a very big year for soul funk ninepiece Saskwatch. Having previously selfreleased 2 7 inch records, Saskwatch signed to Melbourne indie Northside Records // Shock in May for the release of 7 inch single Your Love. Just two months later they backed this up with the release of their début LP, Leave It All Behind. Taking cues from the likes of James Brown and Aretha Franklin, as well as New Yorks bangin’ modern soul scene (Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley et al); Saskwatch combine said cues and bring their own love, grit and sweat to the fore, all in highfidelity, over 12 new tracks. Replete with the sweetest jams and heavy steppin’ funk joints, Leave It All Behind, ticks all the boxes and looks fantastic doing it. Nkechi Anele’s vocals are world class, as is Liam McGorry’s song writing. “Wow, this girl can wail. And I say that with the utmost respect. This is good time sunny soul, the kind made famous by acts like The Supremes....” – Dan Buhagiar (triple j) ● Steve Smyth Steve blew us away with his commanding support performance for Lanie Lane earlier in the year so it is with much enthusiasm that we have invited him back to perform. ‘Steven Smyth is one of those artists who draws you in even before you’ve heard him perform. There seems to be an energy that clings to him which reaps mystery and a deep, honest passion. And when you see him perform you feel like he’s conveying a million conversations, a million experiences filled with heartache, love, excitement… And he delivers his songs with pure honesty and an unconscious bliss. You can almost hear the churning out of his mind through his antique Remington typewriter.’ Triple J Unearthed

Tony and Fleur Dawkins bottled their first vintage in 2000 and say their best asset is their beautiful, northfacing hillside vineyard. A rain shadow over their area limits summer and autumn rainfall, which in turn provides a long cool ripening period, ideal for diseasefree ripening. They use only their own grapes, handcrafting smallbatch wines, and fuss over them from vine to glass. “We are passionate producers who strive for high quality and believe in minimal intervention. Our philosophy is that a wine’s quality comes from where and how it was grown and when it was picked. Ninety per cent of the work is done by the time the grapes are in the shed. Allow the grapes to ferment clean and cool, drain and get the wine into barrel asap and then wait. Sometimes being patient and waiting is the very best and also hardest thing to do.” They have chosen these two very special wines for Moo’s: 2012 Sauvignon Blanc – powerful tropical fruit nose, gripping tight acidity and a pretty palate of pollens to finish. Will stand up to many Asian spices or cut through creamy pasta sauces. A very happy drink on it's own too. 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon – sweet red and black currants wrapped in fine grippy tannins and spicy oak to give length and depth of flavour. Suited to hard cheeses, game meats and robust dishes. Artist of the Month Val Tunbridge was practically born with a brush in her hand and a paint palette alongside her breakfast bowl and lives for art and craft. A former Secondary Art & Craft teacher, Val returned to her passion after raising her children and over the years has passed on her enthusiasm to young and old alike. Her exhibition at Moo’s is a showcase of the diversity of her talent and interests. “Painting has always been my passion and I love doing my own thing. Having an allergy to oil paint I mostly use acrylics or pastels or a combination of mediums – canvasses, cards. Paint, colour, texture and nature intrigue me – always looking for new ideas I can always learn something from our environment.” 89 Whitelaw St, Meeniyan.
