  • Acclaiming the Future
Name: Anouk van der Zee Student number: 3467449 Format: Bachelor thesis Supervisor: dr. Barnita Bagchi Acclaiming the Future A Critical Analysis of the Contemporary Value of High Fantasy Literature Foreword to this thesis I took the opportunity to write about a genre I feel passionate about for this thesis. As I started to look for secondary literature to support my analyses, what I found was almost completely based on related topics, not much on high fantasy itself. Especially on the subject of the fan- tastic, which is close but ultimately not relevant to my choice of genre. I’ve used one line from Todorov’s The Fantastic—almost the go-to work for literary critics interested in this area—in all, and it was a quote from another text to support the claim that the fantastic differs from the marvellous, on which high fantasy is built. As I started to worry about the sustainability of my own thesis, I realised that this is my topic. Consider everything that has been allowed to wear the tag of literature in the last few decades. Some of these definitely fall into the popular or cult category, yet are given serious considera- tion. Not high fantasy, as if the genre were already dead and buried with no other frontrunner than Tolkien. But when a genre—any genre—is still alive, turning out novels and having pu- blishers especially devoted to it (such as Tor Books), literary criticism cannot assume that no other literary work will be turned out. Therefore, its quiet refusal to pay serious attention to the genre is incomprehensible, even unreasonable, and has created a very dismissive atmos- phere—from the critics down to the mainstream reader public.

Abstract In this essay I will analyse in depth Jim Butcher’s and George R.R. Martin’s female protagonists in Butcher’s Dresden Files and Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. The essay will demonstrate how both Butcher and Martin depict their female protagonists and companion characters and how their female characters cope with violence in a different manner than how most female writers let their characters do. Moreover, I will analyse and explain how Butcher and Martin’s female protagonists and companion characters are good examples of strong female characters. Both series will be discussed and analysed separately, and subsequently compared to each other, as well as to similar series by female authors, in order to demonstrate how Butcher and Martin depict their female protagonists differently from female authors. 1 ENC1145 (#14017) Secondary Worlds and (Imaginary) Travel Narratives Instructor Name: Samantha Baugus Course meeting times & locations: T 8-9, R 9, MAEB 0229 Office Location and Hours: Turlington 4367, T 4-5 (10:40-12:35) Course website: Canvas Instructor Email: [email protected] Course Description: Traveling holds a complicated and tense position in society — people travel for pleasure and work, to escape persecution, to conquer new lands, to obey oppressive regimes and captors. But traveling is not limited to the reaches of the world as we know it. In this course we will be exploring travel to what J. R. R. Tolkein termed “secondary worlds” — the worlds of science fiction and fantasy. Why do people write about travel to places that don’t exist? Is there a difference between a fantastic travel narrative and a realistic travel narrative and does that difference matter? Does secondary world travel exist outside of fiction, and should we go to these places? And, most importantly, what is a primary world and what is a secondary world? Our texts will focus on traveling from the primary world to secondary worlds, to different versions of the primary world, and to imaginary places that are part of the primary world. By thinking about these three different kinds of travel, we will think about colonialism and imperialism (what happens when we go to a new world), identity politics (how we interact with the inhabitants of these new world), and the political stakes of inventing new world (why do we need to create the final frontier). Of equal importance will be logistics and modes of travel: defining modes of travel, how we make them, and how we get to secondary worlds.

  • Terry Pratchett -A (Disc) World of Collecting
TERRY PRATCHETT -A (DISC) WORLD OF COLLECTING Colin Steele Background Terrence David John Pratchett - Terry Pratchett - is the author of the phenomenally successful Discworld series and is one of contemporary fiction’s most popular writers. Since Nielsen's records began in 1998, Pratchett has sold around 10 million books in the UK, generating more than £70 million in revenue. His agent and original publisher, Colin Smythe says Pratchett has either written, co-written or been creatively associated with 100-plus books, notably Discworld titles, Despite this prodigious output, Pratchett is one of the UK’s most collectable authors, particularly for his early books and special editions. Pratchett‘s first book, The Carpet People, was published in 1971, while his first Discworld novel, The Colour of Magic, appeared in 1983. 36 more Discworld books have followed, many of which have topped the UK hardback and paperback lists. Pratchett's novels have sold more than 60 million copies and have been translated into 33 languages Until Pratchett’s recent diagnosis of an early stage of a rare form of Alzheimer’s disease, he usually wrote two books a year, which reputedly earned him £1 million each.
