Historical Fiction for Children and Young People: changing fashions, changing forms, changing representations in British writing 1934‐2014 Ann Christine Clark This thesis is submitted for the qualification of Doctor of Philosophy School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics Newcastle University Resubmitted July 2015 Abstract In Language and Ideology in Children’s Fiction (1992) John Stephens forecast the demise of children’s historical fiction as a genre on the grounds that both history itself and the humanist values Stephens saw as underpinning historical fiction were irrelevant to young readers in postmodernity and intrinsically at odds with the attitudes and values of literary postmodernism. In fact, by the end of the millennium juvenile historical fiction was resurgent and continues to propagate humanist ideology. This study explores the changing nature and status of the genre as it has been published in Britain since Geoffrey Trease’s ground‐breaking Bows Against the Barons, a left‐wing retelling of the Robin Hood story, was published in 1934. Consideration is given to the relationship between cultural change and the treatment of the structure, themes, settings and characters that typically feature in historical novels for the young. The work comprises an Introduction and three themed case studies based on a character (Robin Hood), a historical period (the long eighteenth century), and a historical event (the First World War). The case studies are used both to chart changes in the nature, quantity, and reception of historical fiction and to demonstrate the extent to which writers have used historical narratives to explore concerns that were topical at the time the books were written. -

7th GRADE SUMMER READING! June 2020 Dear Incoming 7th Graders, We hope that you have an enjoyable and relaxing summer! At the same time, we don’t want to see you forget all of the skills you have worked so hard on during 6th grade. To keep your skills sharp, we ask you to read two novels this summer to kick off the 7th Grade 20 Book Reading Challenge that we will continue throughout the year. We are encouraging each student to read 20 books throughout this year. Attached is a sheet to record the title and authors of each book that is read. Print out the challenge page and add the two titles and authors of the books you read over the summer. Then bring the challenge page to class with you to turn into your ELA teacher. We encourage students to read across a variety of genres, themes, and authors. The books we read as a class will count toward the 20 books. It is our motto that you can always read more than 20 and should never strive to do less. The book of your choice CANNOT be a book with a film version. Throughout the course of the year we will be exploring the theme of transformation on top of our exploration of story structure and how authors transform traditional structures. This theme will be a reoccurring topic in both our class discussions and writing for each unit we study. We encourage students to utilize the school and public libraries as a means of finding great books to read. -

Most chapters of the novel study focus on one or two chapters of Woodsong and are comprised of four different activities: • Before You Read • Vocabulary Building • Comprehension Questions • Language and Extension Activities A principal expectation of the unit is that students will develop their skills in reading, writing, listening and oral communication, as well as in reasoning and critical thinking. Links with the Common Core Standards (U.S.) Many of the activities included in this curriculum unit are supported by the Common Core Standards. Through the Texas Reading Club, students in grades 2-9 meet real-life and fictional detectives, spies, cops, and criminals. They can also investigate detection techniques and the science of crime solving. The flexibility of the program allows teaciers to decide what aspects of the theme to use and which to ignore. Librarians are encouraged to involve their school districts, other staff members, and volunteers in planning and promoting the program. They are discouraged from embarrassing children by rating their reading skills, criticizing their taste in books, or appearing to doubt their honesty about whether they have read their books. This guide provides ideas for activities, crafts, bulletin boards, speakers, and book and film materials related to the theme.
