Adioumment (Board Action) Naples Elementary School Board of Education Updates ~ June 2018 Last month I share with you that I was able to attend a Tier III Response to Intervention training with Mrs. Piedici and Mrs. Grove. The workshop was presented by Ali Hearn from the Midwest PBIS Network. This educational organization supports the implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports in state, local, and community agencies throughout the Midwest. A partner with the National PBIS Technical Assistance Center, the Network develops the capacity of schools to prevent problem behaviors, promote positive school culture, and to evaluate the impact on both social and academic success of all youth, including those with the highest level of need. Following the workshop, Joe Fantigrossi came to Naples to work with an Elementary Team (Aaron O’Rourke, Chris Arsenault, Liz Dormer, Kyle Inda, Julie Austin Robert Birdsall, Brian Meteyer, Tammy Matthews, Katie Piedici, Christine Green and I). Joe comes from Lyons CSD and works with multiple districts in our region to provide support and training in this RTI model, as well as trauma informed instruction. It was a great opportunity to begin a discussion around our goals of auditing our current practices within a Three-Tiered Model of Support and aligning our teaming structures. I am happy to report that with every department represented, we had a productive morning determining an action plan moving forward. While we have a lot of work to do, we feel we have a better focus on what our true needs are. Mrs. Piedici, Julie Austin, Carrie Grove and I attended a follow-up conference on June 4th (“Check In /Check Out”) which is an intervention we plan to turn key train our staff on in the fall. This summer we have been invited by Joe to join colleagues from other districts in a two day Tier 1 training in July, followed up by another intervention training offered by our WFL Teacher Center (“Zones of Regulation: Helping Students Regulate Emotions in Their World”). I am very excited about the work ahead that will support our students! We are incredibly blessed to have a team of staff who values our students’ emotional health as much as their academic growth. Our students in Grade 4 have completed the annual Science State Assessment. The performance exam was administered on May 23rd and the written exam was on June 4th. I would like to say a huge thank you to Mr. Liebentritt for assisting with the administration of the performance exam, and to Mrs. Green, Mrs. Crawford and Mrs. Becker for scoring. Grade 6 completed ELA computer based field testing on June 6th. We are glad to have our state assessments completed for the year! We will use part of our summer curriculum time to review our students’ data and instructional implications. “Increasing STEAM Opportunities and Student Engagement”: As we reflect on the 2017-2018 school year, I am so proud of the work Mrs. Castle, Mrs. Wordingham and Mrs. Radin-Snaith have done to increase STEAM activities for our students. This picture is one of my all time favorites…I think it truly captures the engagement and pure joy our students experience when they are able to have the freedom to problem solve, collaborate and create. The possibilities are endless for our young learners and we are so fortunate to have a staff that embraces STEAM! As we plan for the year ahead, here are goals that we have for the coming school year: Increase STEAM opportunities for primary students. Currently our 1st graders go to the STEAM lab in groups of 6-8 students during our RTI block and participate in literature based projects and challenges. This has been an engaging educational opportunity for our students and we hope to increase the amount of times students are able to participate. Increase STEAM opportunities for our 2nd graders. Currently a group of 6 students rotate through the lab for a half hour session one time per week and participate in activities such as STEAM challenges and Dash and Dot. The teachers hope to carry over more of the activities in the classroom while still collaborating with Mrs. Wordingham with their weekly session to increase the number of students participating each week. Mrs. Wordingham will continue to work with the Grade 3 Team to offer a weekly after school STEAM session. It was such a popular choice that we had to do a lottery for sign- ups, showing us once again how engaging these opportunities are for our students. Ms. Brennan is planning to investigate an electronic journal that will support enrichment potentially across the grade level. Continue and expand upon the use of Spheros and EV3s Grades 4-6, as well as coding opportunities for students K-6. We currently have 4 Breakout EDU boxes at the Elementary School and 2 at the Jr./Sr. High School. Mrs. Wordingham was able to facilitate classroom use of these during computer lab times as well as in classrooms. We would love to add to our current inventory!! Continue our development of “STEAM Carts” that teachers can sign-out. Continue to work with teachers in grades 4-6 to offer additional STEAM activities for students not enrolled in chorus (which currently has 82 students signed up!). This is a once a week opportunity for 45 minutes. Our staff has truly embraced “the Arts” in STEAM, and this is another example of making sure all students have enrichment opportunities. Students are allowed to sign up on a Google doc for what activity interests them. The teachers plan and run the group activities. Development of program goals and training around our new virtual reality equipment and possible HyperDocs (student centered lessons that inspire curiosity and creativity). Continue to foster understanding (in students and staff) of the Engineering Design Process. Increase after school Makerspace activities for all grade levels. Continue to support our amazing Elementary Robotics Program (Session 1 flyer is attached!) Review of our keyboarding instruction after analyzing year end data. It will be a full house again this summer at Naples Elementary School! We will run 2 programs – Summer Academy and the Summer Special Education Extended School Year Program. The Summer Academy is 5 weeks, Monday-Thursday, and the Summer Special Education Program is 6 weeks, Monday-Friday. Both programs are half day (8:00-11:00am). We are now fully staffed and look forward to welcoming close to 100 students this summer! We would like to give a special thank you Mrs. Green and Deputy Jaus for hosting Summer Safety Talks to our K-6 students. The following is from a featured story on our website: On Wednesday, June 13th, Officer Jaus spent some time with our elementary students to talk about summer safety! He reviewed important information about riding bikes and water safety. He also talked about making good choices with electronics and using the internet. All of the students greatly enjoyed talking about how to be safe this summer! Here are some important tips from Officer Jaus: Bike Safety: Have a properly fitted helmet. Make sure your bike is in good working order. Follow traffic signs and rules for biking on the road. Always walk your bike when you cross the road. Water Safety: Wear a properly fitted lifejacket when on the water. Always have an adult present when you swim. Keep your hands and feet inside the boat when boating.
