  • KEENE, Carolyn
KEENE, Carolyn Harriet Stratemeyer Adams Geboren: 1892. • Sound Learning Audiobook Collection Lists & Samples
Sound Learning Audiobook Collection Lists & Samples Introduction to Summer Listening “School's out for summer” proclaims the lyrics of a popular 1970s song by Alice Cooper. Kids are thrilled, but teachers and parents want to be sure kids don't fall prey to the dreaded summer slide, a term researchers have given to studies that show that students can lose one to three months of hard-won reading skills during the school break. How can parents and other caring adults help kids keep literacy skills strong? Dr. Teri Lesesne (“Summertime and the Reading Is Required?” Knowledge Quest, v. 43, no. 5, p 46-49), children's literature and reading expert, as well as an enthusiastic audiobook advocate, recommends that we “CARE about readers” by offering kids “Choice, Access, Response, and Enthusiasm.” Lesesne’s suggestion is echoed by Search Institute, creator of a framework of 40 Developmental Assets for young people that are key to school success and development into successful and contributing adults. Search Institute names reading for pleasure as a core asset and suggests creating a family tradition of reading together each day, with all screen media— television, cell phones, tablets, computers—turned off. How can families follow the advice of Dr. Lesesne and Search Institute? Try the pleasurable magic of audiobooks! Summer’s here, and the time is right for listening as families spend lots of time in the car: from pool to practice field or on trips to cross-country treks. Audiobooks turn those hectic travel times into shared literary experiences that banish boredom. Researchers have proven that audiobooks increase a listener’s vocabulary, comprehension skills, and fluency while educators advocate audiobooks for all ages, as listening is the fundamental language art which serves as the basis of reading, writing, and speaking skills.

This publisher made a comment to Larry Cochran during the Six Flags Over Texas 50th anniversary gathering in August about how we were losing too many industry greats (Cleveland Smith was our reference point) and losing them all too fast. Slade Little did we realize that we were seeing only the beginning of what would be a rash of obituaries to run in future editions of AT. Cochran’s response was short but true: “Our industry is old, and we are going to lose a whole lot more in the coming years.” One of the problems our industry has is that we, as a whole, have not done enough to record the stories that these older park legends have to tell. I know I’m as guilty as anyone for not recording conservations with the late William L. Cobb, Luther Clark, Cleveland Smith and Ron Toomer who were all in my local area. Now, their stories, knowledge and ability to verify our industry history are gone forever. visited briefly at the Golden Ticket Awards with AT EDITORIAL: Scott Rutherford, [email protected] Rick Root, World Waterpark Association, and he too agreed it was time to record the waterpark’s history Season’s end before more legends from that industry are gone.

  • Edward “Eddie” Rickenbacker Topic Guide for Chronicling America (
Edward “Eddie” Rickenbacker Topic Guide for Chronicling America (http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov) Introduction Born in Columbus, Ohio, to German-speaking Swiss immigrants, Edward Rickenbacker (1890-1973) only completed grade seven of school before dropping out to help provide for his mother after the untimely death of his father. Wanting to work with automobiles, Rickenbacker learned as much as he could about engineering before ultimately becoming an accomplished racecar driver. Rickenbacker drove in the Indianapolis 500 four times, but only finished once (1914). When war was declared on Germany in 1917, Rickenbacker enlisted in the Army with ambitions to become a pilot. He initially wanted to recruit a squad of racecar drivers as fighter pilots due to their familiarity to tight spaces and high speed, but the idea was rejected. Through hard work and perseverance, Rickenbacker was eventually assigned to the 94th Aero Squadron where he would go on to record 26 confirmed kills, earning him the status of “ace” and making him the most successful American fighter pilot during World War I. Rickenbacker earned several medals during his time, including a belated Medal of Honor that was awarded in 1931. Important Dates .
