Expansions on the Book of Ezekiel Introduction This
Expansions on the Book of Ezekiel Introduction This document follows the same pattern as other “expansion” texts posted on the Lectio Divina Homepage relative to books of the Bible. That is to say, it presents the Book of Ezekiel to be read in accord with the practice of lectio divina whose single purpose is to dispose the reader to being in God’s presence. The word “expansion” means that the text is fleshed out with a certain liberty while at the same time remaining consistent with the original Hebrew, a practice not unlike you’d find in a modern day yeshiva. There’s not attempt to provide information about the text nor its author; that can be garnered elsewhere from reliable sources. Besides, inserting such information can be a distraction from reading Ezekiel in the spirit of lectio divina. One requirement for lectio divina as applied to the Book of Ezekiel is demanded, if you will. That consists in taking as much time as possible to ponder and to linger over a single word, phrase or sentence. In other words, the whole idea of a time limit or covering material is to be dismissed. Obviously this runs counter to the conventional way we read and process information. Adopting this slow-motion practice isn’t as easy as it seems, but even a small exposure to it makes you sensitive to the Book of Ezekiel as an aide to prayer. Apart from this approach, the text at hand has nothing to offer, really. As for reading it, anyone will discover quickly that it’s rather chopped up, not coherent as one would read a conventional text. -

Zion in the Sources: Yearning for Zion Briana Simon :כותב המאמר Have you ever wondered where the world 'Zion' actually comes from? This article explores Zion in the Bible, aggadot, customs and laws, ancient and modern poetry, and through the Zionist movement itself. Foreword Yearning for Zion is the root of what it means to be a Jew. "Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto the land that I will show thee" (Genesis 12:1) this is the Divine command to our Father Abraham; this is where the connection between being a Jew, and being a person whose homeland is the land of Israel, begins. For Jews all over the globe, the Land of Israel is the spiritual homeland. For those of us who live in the State of Israel, the land of Israel is our spiritual and physical home. After 2000 years of exile, we have arrived in our homeland a homeland which was not handed to us on a silver platter. Another people also loves this land, and fate has brought them to live here for hundreds of years. For decades we have extended a hand in peace and partnership. It is our hope that love for the Land of Israel will bring to all those who live within it, and those who love from afar, a life of peace, fraternity and prosperity. Indeed, may it be that "From Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of G-d from Jerusalem." Amen! The Memorial Inscription from the Bimah of the Great Synagogue of Vilna
Article Between Yerushalayim DeLita and Jerusalem— The Memorial Inscription from the Bimah of the Great Synagogue of Vilna Jon Seligman Israel Antiquities Authority, Jerusalem 91004, Israel; [email protected] Received: 19 February 2020; Accepted: 18 March 2020; Published: 1 April 2020 Abstract: During excavations of the bimah (the platform for reading the Torah) of the 17th-century Great Synagogue of Vilna (Vilnius, Lithuania), an important memorial inscription was exposed. This paper describes the new finds associated with the baroque-rococo architecture of the bimah and focuses on the inscription and its meaning. The Hebrew inscription, engraved on a large stone slab, is a complex rabbinic text filled with biblical allusions, symbolism, gematria, and abbreviations. The text describes the donation of a Torah reading table in 1796 in honour of R. Ḥayim ben Ḥayim and of Sarah by their sons, R. Eliezer and Shmuel. The inscription notes the aliyah (emigration) of Ḥayim and Sarah to Eretz Israel, the Land of Israel. The interpretation of the inscription shows the use of multiple messianic motifs. Historical analysis identifies the involvement of the Vilna community with the support of the Yishuv (the Jewish community in Ottoman Palestine) and the aliyah of senior scholars and community leaders at the end of the 18th and early 19th centuries. Amongst these figures were Ḥayim ben Ḥayim and Sarah, with Ḥayim ben Ḥayim going on to represent the Vilna community in the Land of Israel as its emissary, distributing charitable donations to the scholarly Ashkenazi community resident in Tiberias, Safed, and later Jerusalem.
