This article explores Zion in the Bible, aggadot, customs and laws, ancient and modern poetry, and through the Zionist movement itself. Foreword Yearning for Zion is the root of what it means to be a Jew. "Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto the land that I will show thee" (Genesis 12:1) this is the Divine command to our Father Abraham; this is where the connection between being a Jew, and being a person whose homeland is the land of Israel, begins. For Jews all over the globe, the Land of Israel is the spiritual homeland. For those of us who live in the State of Israel, the land of Israel is our spiritual and physical home. After 2000 years of exile, we have arrived in our homeland a homeland which was not handed to us on a silver platter. Another people also loves this land, and fate has brought them to live here for hundreds of years. For decades we have extended a hand in peace and partnership. It is our hope that love for the Land of Israel will bring to all those who live within it, and those who love from afar, a life of peace, fraternity and prosperity. Indeed, may it be that "From Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of G-d from Jerusalem." Amen!     Article Between Yerushalayim DeLita and Jerusalem— The Memorial Inscription from the Bimah of the Great Synagogue of Vilna Jon Seligman Israel Antiquities Authority, Jerusalem 91004, Israel; [email protected] Received: 19 February 2020; Accepted: 18 March 2020; Published: 1 April 2020 Abstract: During excavations of the bimah (the platform for reading the Torah) of the 17th-century Great Synagogue of Vilna (Vilnius, Lithuania), an important memorial inscription was exposed. This paper describes the new finds associated with the baroque-rococo architecture of the bimah and focuses on the inscription and its meaning. The Hebrew inscription, engraved on a large stone slab, is a complex rabbinic text filled with biblical allusions, symbolism, gematria, and abbreviations. The text describes the donation of a Torah reading table in 1796 in honour of R. Ḥayim ben Ḥayim and of Sarah by their sons, R. Eliezer and Shmuel. The inscription notes the aliyah (emigration) of Ḥayim and Sarah to Eretz Israel, the Land of Israel. The interpretation of the inscription shows the use of multiple messianic motifs. Historical analysis identifies the involvement of the Vilna community with the support of the Yishuv (the Jewish community in Ottoman Palestine) and the aliyah of senior scholars and community leaders at the end of the 18th and early 19th centuries. Amongst these figures were Ḥayim ben Ḥayim and Sarah, with Ḥayim ben Ḥayim going on to represent the Vilna community in the Land of Israel as its emissary, distributing charitable donations to the scholarly Ashkenazi community resident in Tiberias, Safed, and later Jerusalem. I’m not dispassionate when it comes to Israel. Quite the contrary. The establishment of the state in 1948; the fulfillment of its envisioned role as home and haven for Jews from around the world; its wholehearted embrace of democracy and the rule of law; and its impressive scientific, cultural, and economic achievements are accomplishments beyond my wildest imagination. For centuries, Jews around the world prayed for a return to Zion. We are the lucky ones who have seen those prayers answered.   • Liturgical References to Zion כִּי־בָחַר יְהֹוָה בְּצִיּוֹן
    Liturgical References to Zion Zion, Eretz Yisrael (The Land of Israel) and Jerusalem are mentioned frequently in ancient Jewish texts: the ​ ​ Bible, the Prophetic Books, the Talmud, and the Siddur (Jewish prayerbook). The archeological evidence for ​ Jewish presence in The Land of Israel is abundant. An examination of liturgy reveals the connection of the people to The Land of Israel. Jews are directed to engage in formal worship services three times a day: in the evening (Ma'ariv), in the ​ ​ morning (Shacharit), and in the afternoon (Minchah). Additional blessings are recited prior to and following ​​ ​​ meals and on special occasions and holidays. Prayers are collected in the siddur, the compendium of liturgy ​ ​ that reflect the core beliefs of Judaism. The liturgy is a window into the unfolding history of the Jewish people, their faith, their relationship with G-d, with other people, with time and place, and to Eretz Yisrael. One of the ​ most progressive 19th century thinkers, Franz Rosenzweig, maintained that the prayer book is the enduring ​ “sum and substance of the whole of historical Judaism, its handbook and memorial tablet.” The liturgy contains biblical passages and rabbinic reflections that praise, thank, and declare the wonder of the G-d’s creation. In studying the liturgy and prayers for special occasions at home or in the synagogue, one can see both the physical place and the spiritual aspiration of Zion continually identified. While it has evolved over two millennia, the basic structure and core content of the Siddur and the special prayers for home and synagogue ​ ​ th were codified and have been set for worship since the early rabbinic period, about the 6 ​ century of the ​ common era.

    3/6/2009 JEN Winter 2003- Alvin Schiff Article The Development of Israel Study Programs By Alvin Schiff Full-time study in a yeshiva or seminary in Israel for one or two years after graduation from a yeshiva or Jewish day high school is now a commonplace phenomenon in North American, English, French, South African, and Australian modern Orthodox Jewish education. The overall impact of the post-high school yeshiva and seminary study programs is substantial, particularly regarding religious ritual experience, commitment to continued Torah study, and to Zionism, including the desire to make aliyah. The Israeli Zionist yeshivot for men and seminaries for women inculcate a strong feeling of responsibility for K’lal Yisrael , a love for the State of Israel, and initiate a continuing relationship with the Jewish State and the yishuv . In 1957, as pedagogic consultant and supervisor of the Department of Jewish Day Schools and Yeshivot of the Jewish Education Committee of New York (now the Board of Jewish Education of Greater New York), I developed two types of programs for study in Israel. The first type —Tochnit Yod Bet (The Twelfth Year Program)—was for seniors in public high schools who studied in Conservative and Reform supplementary schools and for seniors in yeshiva and Jewish day high schools. The second type of program — Tochnit Yod Gimmel (The Thirteenth Year Program) — was for graduates of public high schools who also studied in Reform and Conservative congregational schools and for graduates of Yeshiva and Jewish Day High Schools. The program for seniors — Tochnit Yod Bet — was based upon the reality that seniors in New York high schools spend the spring term of their senior year largely on non-academic projects since, essentially, they have completed the high school curriculum and have taken all the necessary exams for graduation.
