Education South West Multi Academy Trust schools are all in South Devon, and are a mix of primary, all-through and secondary schools: Primary Schools: Christow, Blackawton, East Allington, Kingswear, Rydon and Stoke Fleming All-through schools: Dartmouth Academy Secondary Schools: Coombeshead Academy, Kingsbridge Community College and Teign School. Key points of joining Education South West Multi-Academy Trust Common values shared by South Hams Federation and Education South West: A strong moral purpose where the needs of children always come first. A culture of ambition and high aspirations. A commitment to ensuring that all children achieve well, regardless of their situation or starting point. A commitment on the part of Education South West that each school or group of schools within the Trust has its own identity within its community which is supported by Local Governing Body comprising parents, staff and community members. A culture of openness and a belief that sharing best practice helps to improve the education that we can provide for all of our children. We want all our staff to continuously develop their expertise because this will ensure the children get the best education possible. Education South West will bring the benefits of: Kingsbridge Community College is a Teaching School that works with its alliance of schools to provide a wide range of training for teachers and support staff. Kingsbridge Community College was the first of 32 schools across the country to gain a licence from the DfE to run the National Professional Qualification suite of programmes for middle, senior leaders and headship. Kingsbridge Community College is also a Research School, amongst the first five such schools to be appointed nationally, helping teachers improve their practice based on up-to-date educational research evidence. Being part of a larger group of schools provides the opportunity not just to recruit the best staff but to retain them by offering them wider opportunities across our schools.     FINAL REPORT 1 | P a g e Salcombe Bioblitz 2015 – Final Report Salcombe Bioblitz 2015 This year’s Bioblitz was held in North Sands, Salcombe (Figure 1). Surveying took place from 11am on Sunday the 27th September until 2pm on Monday the 28th September 2015. Over the course of the 24+ hours of the event, 11 timetabled, public-participation activities took place, including scientific surveys and guided walks. More than 250 people attended, including 75 local school children, and over 150 volunteer experts and enthusiasts, families and members of the public. A total of 1109 species were recorded. Introduction A Bioblitz is a multidisciplinary survey of biodiversity in a set place at a set time. The main aim of the event is to make a snapshot of species present in an area and ultimately, to raise public awareness of biodiversity, science and conservation. The event was the seventh marine/coastal Bioblitz to be organised by the Marine Biological Association (MBA). This year the MBA led in partnership with South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and Ambios Ltd, with both organisations contributing vital funding and support for the project overall. Ambios Ltd were able to provide support via the LEMUR+ wildlife.technology.skills project and the Heritage Lottery Fund. Support also came via donations from multiple organisations. Xamax Clothing Ltd provided the iconic event t-shirts free of cost; Salcombe Harbour Hotel and Spa and Monty Hall’s Great Escapes donated gifts for use as competition prizes; The Winking Prawn Café and Higher Rew Caravan and Camping Park offered discounts to Bioblitz staff and volunteers for the duration of the event; Morrisons Kingsbridge donated a voucher that was put towards catering; Budget Car Hire provided use of a van to transport equipment to and from the event free of cost; and donations were received from kind individuals.

    Mortimers in the 16th century Devon Tax Rolls In 1524, Henry VIII raised a tax in attempt to fund the war with France. This was repeated again in 1543. These records are among the earliest accessible records of Mortimers in Devon and give us a glimpse of the prosperity and distribution of members of the Mortimer family during the first half of the 16th century. Overall, there were 25 men and women listed in 1524, having already spread to 16 parishes. 19 years later, they had absented from several of the aforementioned parishes but expanded to 19 parishes. The name has been standardised to Mortimer for internet search purposes. Little meaning was attached to the spellings of names in the 1500s and spelling varied widely.     Newsletter 7 September 2020 Dear All, A new term; one that will be like no other in many ways I am sure, but one which promises an awful lot of good and surely has to be better than the previous 3 half-terms we have gone through. I will try to keep this brief. During the lock-down period, all of us have been engaged in ensuring children were safe and had access to on-line and home learning. As well as working through bank holidays, half terms and Easter to keep our schools open and operating for key workers and vulnerable children, staff across the trust have worked tirelessly to ensure that staff and children were suitably equipped and that every member of ESW was supported. As an organisation, we also worked closely with Devon to support other schools and the council, and continue to do so. In addition, we made over 500 face visors at the start of the lock-down period, working as part of a co-ordinated team with KEVICC and the UTC, providing these to local care homes, hospices and hospitals. Over the summer senior staff, support staff and teachers have also been working in revamping schemes of learning to take account of lost curriculum time, working to secure destinations as a result of Centre Assessed Grade outcomes (in addition to dealing professionally and swiftly with that whole fiasco) and working with all staff across the trust to ensure schools are able to open for the new term. I would also like to welcome Tracy Hannon to the team as our Director of School Improvement.

The first and most significant was that we entered our fifth year. During that time we have learnt much about how to run a successful national network of local Hubs of schools with a common purpose of providing the best education possible for all our pupils, especially the most disadvantaged. Membership of the Network of Excellence reached over 300 schools. This increase came from some new Hubs and also the continual growth of our existing ones. The next milestone was our decision not to form a Challenge Partners MAT. This was made for two reasons. The considerable additional funding we would have had to provide to support its formation, and that our leadership team felt our role was to support those members who wished to form their own MATs and not to compete with them. There are now over 30 MATs in Challenge Partners, with more joining. Nearly a third of the schools are now in MATs and the numbers continue to increase significantly. This has caused us to focus on our core provision for our schools and that now includes the very popular weekly email and a national brokering service.

    Teign School is an 11 - 18 comprehensive school and a member of Education South West which comprises 4 secondary schools and 6 primary schools within Devon. In addition to Teign School, Education South West (ESW) schools include Coombeshead Academy, Rydon Primary School and Christow Community Primary School. Slightly further afield, within the South Hams, the other ESW schools include two secondary schools: Kingsbridge Community College and Dartmouth Academy and four other primary schools. The schools within the ESW family share a common desire to give our children the education, opportunities and confidence that will enable them to lead great lives. Teign School was recognised by Ofsted in January 2019 for having “raised expectations”, the staff “lead by example”, have “created a culture of respect and tolerance where there are positive relationships between leaders, staff and pupils”. The behaviour is “good” and the school is a “calm and orderly place where pupils are ready to learn. Leaders at all levels are ambitious for the school.” A new leadership team has been in place since September 2017 and the School has embarked upon an ambitious Improvement Plan. This plan places student progress and achievement at the heart of all we do. At Teign we share a common vision where student achievement is at the core, where we build a love of learning, where we support one another, where we ensure we all have the best mind-set and we are getting students ready for the world. All members of staff are fully committed in moving the school forward. We are delighted that we are seeing the impact of our improvement strategy with a significant uplift in our student outcomes at both GCSE and A Level.
