Motorists (from north or south) should leave the Motorway at this Junction and turn west towards Carlisle on the A69. The Mart is within1/4 mile of the Motorway (filter left at the traffic lights) on the Rosehill Industrial Estate. Timetable of Events: Tuesday 13th April Arrival of Stock 4pm - 6pm Timetable of Events: Wednesday 14th April Arrival of Stock 7am onwards Sale 11.30am Method and Order of Sale: All animals will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order unless any alteration is authorised and announced by the Auctioneers. A commission of 5.25% will be charged on all sales. Conditions Of Sale: The Sale is held subject to the Auctioneers General Terms and Conditions of Sale (printed in this catalogue) and to the Auction Rules and Conditions of Sale from respective Breed Societies. The latter Conditions are not so printed but will be displayed in the Sale Premises and available to those purchasers who require them, in booklet form. Settlement And Clearance Of Stock: Settlement in full is due to the Auctioneers immediately at the conclusion of the Sale. No animal may leave the Sale Premises without an official PASS, obtainable only from the Auctioneers upon settlement and all stock should be cleared from the sale premises on the day of the sale. Pedigree Transfers: Cattle in the sale are registered with the respective breed societies and will be officially transferred and pedigrees for all these animals will be effected by the Auctioneers and the Society as soon as possible after the sale - free of expense to the Purchasers. Commissions: The Auctioneers will faithfully execute commissions to purchase on behalf of buyers unable to attend the sale in person upon receipt of written notice and instructions received in their office not later than 48 hours before commencement of sale. Given the same notice telephone bids can be accommodated. Insurance: Facilities will be available (through H&H Insurance Brokers Ltd.) for buyers to insure their animals for transit and other risks, from the fall of the hammer.     FOLK SONG IN CUMBRIA: A DISTINCTIVE REGIONAL REPERTOIRE? A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Susan Margaret Allan, MA (Lancaster), BEd (London) University of Lancaster, November 2016 ABSTRACT One of the lacunae of traditional music scholarship in England has been the lack of systematic study of folk song and its performance in discrete geographical areas. This thesis endeavours to address this gap in knowledge for one region through a study of Cumbrian folk song and its performance over the past two hundred years. Although primarily a social history of popular culture, with some elements of ethnography and a little musicology, it is also a participant-observer study from the personal perspective of one who has performed and collected Cumbrian folk songs for some forty years. The principal task has been to research and present the folk songs known to have been published or performed in Cumbria since circa 1900, designated as the Cumbrian Folk Song Corpus: a body of 515 songs from 1010 different sources, including manuscripts, print, recordings and broadcasts. The thesis begins with the history of the best-known Cumbrian folk song, ‘D’Ye Ken John Peel’ from its date of composition around 1830 through to the late twentieth century. From this narrative the main themes of the thesis are drawn out: the problem of defining ‘folk song’, given its eclectic nature; the role of the various collectors, mediators and performers of folk songs over the years, including myself; the range of different contexts in which the songs have been performed, and by whom; the vexed questions of ‘authenticity’ and ‘invented tradition’, and the extent to which this repertoire is a distinctive regional one.

Many airports in the UK are transitioning from conventional navigation equipment, to newer satellite based approaches which use Global Positioning Satellites (GPS) similar to those used for car navigation systems. Approaches using GPS are referred to Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) or ‘aRea Navigation’ (RNAV). These approaches allow airports to design special procedures for helicopters as well as fixed wing aircraft. Whilst this technology is relatively new, more and more aircraft are becoming RNAV equipped and more pilots are becoming qualified to fly RNAV approaches.

Executive Summary We have decided to refuse this application based on all information provided. 1. Summary of the proposal Application for a new full abstraction licence for low-head hydropower electric power generation (~40kW) on the existing Buckabank weir. Buckabank Weir is a ca. 30 m wide curved stone weir located 1.5 km south of Dalston, Cumbria on the River Caldew. The weir was constructed in the 1920s after a large flood event to provide flows to a mill via a leat. The water no longer serves the mill for any practical reasons and is used only for visual amenity. Figure 1: photograph of Buckabank weir Figure 2: scheme layout Water is to be abstracted from the River Caldew to a Venturi-Enhanced Turbine Technology (VETT) turbine – See figures 2 and 3 for scheme layout and turbine design. The primary flow through the hydropower scheme would feature a 50mm debris screen and the secondary flow through the turbine would be fitted with 2mm in-take screen. No screen would be installed on the outflow. Water is taken out of the main body of the river, dropping into a stilling chamber before going through the VETT system. 20% of the water goes through the turbine, and this would be screened at 2mm.

    Mapping the Late Medieval and Post Medieval Landscape of Cumbria Two Volumes Volume 1: Text Caron Egerton Newman Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of History, Classics and Archaeology Newcastle University Submitted: June 2014 Abstract This study is an analysis of the development of rural settlement patterns and field systems in Cumbria from the later medieval period through to the late eighteenth century. It uses documentary, cartographic and archaeological evidence. This evidence is interpreted utilising the techniques of historic landscape characterisation (HLC), map regression and maps created by the author, summarising and synthesising historical and archaeological data. The mapped settlement data, in particular, has been manipulated using tools of graphic analysis available within a Graphical Information System (GIS). The initial product is a digital map of Cumbria in the late eighteenth century, based on the county-scale maps of that period, enhanced with information taken from enclosure maps and awards, and other post medieval cartographic sources. From this baseline, an interpretation of the late medieval landscape was developed by adding information from other data sources, such as place names and documentary evidence. The approach was necessarily top-down and broad brush, in order to provide a landscape-scale, sub-regional view. This both addresses the deficiencies within the standard historical approach to landscape development, and complements such approaches. Standard historical approaches are strong on detail, but can be weak when conclusions based on localised examples are extrapolated and attributed to the wider landscape. The methodology adopted by this study allows those local analyses to be set within a broader landscape context, providing another tool to use alongside more traditional approaches to historic landscape studies.
