Tandis qu’un nombre grandissant d’auteurs, y compris juifs, traitent de la question israélo-palestinienne comme d’un colonialisme de peuplement, et non plus comme d’un conflit ethnique entre groupes nationaux, se pose la question : comment une telle domination est-elle possible à l’ère des médias de masse ? Plus précisément, pourquoi cette domination est-elle si peu contestée de l’intérieur de la société israélienne alors même qu’elle contredit le discours public de l’État qui tente, par tous les moyens, de se faire accepter comme étant démocratique et éclairé ? Pour y répondre, cette thèse procède à une analyse de la connaissance de sens commun israélienne afin de détecter à la fois le mode de connaissance, issu des relations sociales, privilégié pour faire sens des rapports ethnonationaux, mais aussi la manière dont cette doxa vient légitimer la domination des Palestiniens. Empiriquement, cette sociologie de la connaissance se fonde sur un corpus de huit autobiographies de politiciens et d’activistes juifs israéliens, sionistes (Ḥaïm Herzog, Michael Oren, Shimon Peres et Lea Rabin) comme antisionistes (Susan Nathan, Ilan Pappé, Miko Peled et Nissim Rejwan), parues en langue originale anglaise ces vingt dernières années. Leur analyse met en lumière la définition dominante de l’identité nationale israélienne — laquelle pose la Palestine comme propriété juive exclusive, le génocide nazi comme danger récurrent qui justifie toute réponse militaire et l’appartenance occidentale comme garantie de supériorité morale — et combien elle favorise un rapport au monde centré sur la solidarité ethnique intrajuive qui empêche toute identification à l’arabité. Plus encore, s’y manifeste à même le rapport hégémonique à l’altérité, tel que ces autobiographies le reproduisent ou le contestent, une double dynamique de dépossession coloniale consistant à discréditer et effacer le rapport à l’espace, au temps et à la culture tant des Arabes palestiniens que des juifs n’adhérant pas à une définition sioniste de la judaïté. Mots-clés : sociologie de la connaissance, colonialisme de peuplement, sionisme, identité nationale, mémoire sociale, autobiographies, analyse structurale de discours. iii Abstract In a predominantly postcolonial world, Israel sets itself apart as its domination of another people, the Palestinian Arabs, is still ongoing. While a growing number of scholars, including Jews, address the Israeli-Palestinian issue as settler colonialism rather than an ethnic conflict between national groups, the question arises: how is such domination still possible in this mass media era? More specifically, why are there so few Israelis challenging this rule from within, especially considering that it contradicts the public discourse of their state’s manifold attempts to be acknowledged as democratic and enlightened? To answer this question, this thesis proceeds to analyze Israeli common sense knowledge in order to detect the mode of knowledge, embedded in social relations, used to comprehend ethnonational relationships, but also how this doxa legitimizes the domination over the Palestinians. Empirically, this sociology of knowledge is based on a corpus of eight autobiographies written in English by Jewish Israeli politicians and activists, some Zionist (Chaim Herzog, Michael Oren, Shimon Peres and Lea Rabin) and some anti-Zionist (Susan Nathan, Ilan Pappé, Miko Peled and Nissim Rejwan), and published over the last twenty years. Their analysis highlights the mainstream definition of Israeliness—which stresses Palestine as an exclusive Jewish property, the Nazi genocide as a recurrent threat that justifies any military response, and affiliation to the West as a guarantee of moral superiority—and how it fosters a relationship to the world centered on intra-Jewish ethnic solidarity that excludes any identification with Arabness. Moreover, a careful look at the hegemonic relationship to otherness, as reproduced or challenged by these autobiographies, reveals a twofold dynamic of colonial dispossession aimed at discrediting and erasing the relationship to space, time and culture of both the Palestinian Arabs and the Jews who do not abide by a Zionist definition of Judaism. I will not con- sider questions of right and justice or the merits of conflicting claims, but will concentrate on the likely consequences of proposed policies and programs. Secondly, I will limit attention to only one of the many problems of the region, the Israeli-Arab conflict. For some time, the United States government has been commit- ted to an "incremental" approach that seeks to reduce the short-run likelihood of conflict between the major military powers: primarily, Israel and Egypt; secondarily, Israel and Syria. Within this frame- work, priority is assigned to separation-of-forces agreements and other measures to reduce tension. The approach has had some limited success and may lead to more far-reaching arrangements, despite the present stalemate, since it conforms to the immediate needs of the belligerent states and the United States.

Israel-Palestine through the lens of game theory Amal Ahmad∗ February 2021 Abstract Why have Israel and the Palestinians failed to implement a \land for peace" solution, along the lines of the Oslo Accords? This paper studies the applica- tion of game theory to this question. I show that existing models of the conflict largely rely on unrealistic assumptions about what the main actors are trying to achieve. Specifically, they assume that Israel is strategically interested in withdrawing from the occupied territories pending resolvable security concerns but that it is obstructed from doing so by violent Palestinians with other objec- tives. I use historical analysis along with bargaining theory to shed doubt on this assumption, and to argue that the persistence of conflict has been aligned with, not contrary to, the interests of the militarily powerful party, Israel.

    Intercultural Communication Studies XIV: 4 2005 Said Faiq CULTURAL DISLOCATION THROUGH TRANSLATION Said Faiq American University of Sharjah Introduction Translation, in its academic, professional and anthropological meanings, remains one of the main means through which texts of one culture are made available in another. It should, in theory, be the site of a potentially fruitful clash of different cultures and particularly vital in the case of translation from those supposedly weaker and subordinate cultures into dominant ones, as in the case of translation from Arabic into English and French, for example (cf. Faiq, 2004). This notion of translating not only covers the traditional definition of translation, transfer of texts from one language to another, but also, and more importantly, texts written in one language but which originate in or concern cultures other than that of the language in which they are written. Over the last two decades or so, many translation scholars have stressed that translation, by necessity, involves manipulation and subversion of linguistic and cultural traditions, particularly those emanating from the so- called third world. Of course, within translation studies this shift of focus, from issues of fidelity and equivalence still shocks traditionalists who persist in their belief in value-free translation, as well as in the fact that translation cannot but refer to the transfer of texts from one language to another, rather than subsuming representation of others without any actual transfer of texts. This is more ideologically relevant particularly to post-colonial contexts. Referring to Venuti’s (1995) notions of transparency, invisibility and fluency, Susan Bassnett (1998) appropriately argues that such a translation project always favours the target readers, so much so that the source text, its culture and readers become insignificant.

    On Understanding Syrian Diasporic Identities through a Selection of Syrian Literary Works Ghada Alatrash Mount Royal University [email protected] Najat Abed Alsamad [email protected] Abstract As of late August 2018, a total of 58,600 Syrian refugees have arrived in Canada (Government of Canada, 2019). The Syrian Diaspora today is a complex topic that speaks to issues of dislocation, displacement, loss, exile, identity, a desire for belonging, and resilience. The aim of this paper is to offer a better understanding of the Syrian peoples who have become, within the past four years, part of our Canadian citizenry, local communities, and members of our schools and workforce. By engaging the voices of Syrians through their literary works, this essay seeks to challenge some of the ontological and epistemological underpinnings that have historically defined Syrians and to offer alternate ways in which we may better know and understand what it means to be Syrian today. Historically Syrians have written and spoken about exile in their literature, long before the the Syrian war began in March of 2011. To deliver a sense of Syrian identities, a selected number of pre-Syrian-war writers and poets are engaged in this essay, including Nizar Kabbani, Muhammad al-Maghut, Zakaria Tamer, Mamduh Adwan, Adonis and Nasib Arida; furthermore, to capture a glimpse of a post-war sentiment, the voice of Syrian novelist Najat Abdul Samad, whose work was written from within the national borders of a war- torn Syria, is brought into the discussion. While it would be mistaken to reduce the entire Israeli-Palestinian conflict to a single factor, the territorial question is arguably the determinative cause underlying the intractability of the conflict. The territorial question, in turn, is inextricably tied to Israel’s establishment of settlements – i.e., civilian communities - beyond the Green Line. Yet despite the conflict’s influence on Israel’s security, and even though the settlements will play a crucial role in determining the future of the conflict, public debate has sorely lacked serious discussion of the settlements’ impact on Israel’s national security. This paper attempts to fill the void by providing a comprehensive, fact-based analysis of the implications of the settlement enterprise on Israeli security. The analysis is backed by data and by input from Israel’s leading security professionals. The goal of this paper is not to end the debate but rather to spark it – in the hope that, even in the current muddy political climate, it will be possible to responsibly discuss a matter vital to the future of all Israelis.
