In acknowledging the imperfect nature of this research, we are able to maximize its utility and extend further dialogue and inquiry. viii ABSTRACT Much of the current literature about sexual minorities examines the experiences of lesbian- and gay-identified individuals. The current study was designed to facilitate increased understanding of sexuality for people who have multi-gendered attractions and sexual identities (e.g., bisexual, queer). This work extends beyond discrete binary categories and labels for sexual orientation, such as straight, gay, and lesbian. In the current examination of this expanded category, labeled as multisexual, it becomes important to shift not only the conceptualization of sexual orientation but also the nature of minority stress, from examining homophobia and heterosexism, to biphobia and monosexism. Under circumstances when an individual may have very little control over the stressor, such as prejudicial attitudes and discrimination, there is research to suggest that emotion-focused coping (specifically forgiveness) mitigates harmful mental health outcomes. The current study sought to address gaps in the current literature on LGB identities, including clearly assessing sexual identity, increased specificity in defining the population of study, and examining multidimensional relationships between variables (Diamond, 2003a). This study sought to estimate the fit of self-report data to a model of minority stress adapted from Meyer (2003), examining the interplay of minority stress, coping, and consequent health outcomes of people who are identify between and beyond the heterosexual and homosexual. Additionally, the study examined the ability of forgiveness and other styles of coping, including individual and LGBTQ community social support, to mitigate the expected negative association between minority stress and ix mental health and well-being. Participants (N = 207) identified with labels that embrace a more fluid concept of emotional, romantic, or sexual relationships (e.g., bisexual, pansexual, omnisexual, PoMoSexual, questioning, unlabeled) and provided self-report data online. While the observed data did not provide a strong statistical fit with the hypothesized model of minority stress (Meyer, 2003), supplementary multiple regression analyses suggested a unique contribution of forgiveness in mitigating the detrimental relationship between

Insomuch as nonmonosexual women (i.e., women with non-exclusive sexual orientations) experience unique challenges due to monosexism, relationship quality may be influenced by whether partners share a monosexual or nonmonosexual identity. The current study is a longitudinal, dyadic analysis of 118 female parents within 63 same-sex couples whose relationship quality (relationship maintenance, conflict, love, ambivalence) was assessed at five time points across the first 5 years of adoptive parenthood.

Dolan Students who are attracted to more than one gender, referred to as nonmonosexual students, face many barriers in synthesizing their sexual orientation identities (Weinberg, Williams, & Pryor, 1994). Monosexism, a form of oppression that promotes exclusive heterosexual, lesbian, or gay behaviors as the only legitimate concepts of sexual orientation, inhibits the thriving of nonmonosexual students and fogs true understanding of nonmonosexuality (Rust, 2000a). Ross University of Toronto Drawing from queer and communication privacy management frameworks, this study exami- nes the narratives of 22 bisexual, male-partnered women who were interviewed during the perinatal period and one year postnatally about their disclosures of sexual identity to family of origin. Most women rarely discussed their sexual identity with family; participants who had disclosed described such disclosures as provoking discomfort. Some women stated that their parental status seemed to invalidate the need to talk about their sexual history or iden- tity with family, due its declining salience and increased concerns about judgment. This study reveals how partnership and parenthood statuses contribute to the intensification of heteronormative pressures in relation to family. Therapists should attend to the role of heteronormative values regarding partnering, family-building, and parenting.     Ways To Be An Ally to Nonmonosexual / Bi People The ideas in this pamphlet were generated during a discussion at a UC Davis Bi Visibility Project group meeting and were compiled Winter quarter, 2009. Nonmonosexual / bisexual individuals self-identify in a variety of different ways – please keep in mind that though this pamphlet gives suggestions about how to be a good ally, one of the most important aspects of being an ally is respecting individual’s decisions about self-identification. There are hundreds of ways to be a good ally – Please use these suggestions as a starting point, and seek additional resources!
