The mission of that commission is “to encour- age preservation, restoration, rehabilitation, and adaptation of structures, landscapes and areas repre- senting the city’s heritage for the present and future citizens of McHenry,” according to the city web- site. Landmark commissioner Patrick Wirtz, a parishioner at St. Patrick Parish since 1948, called it “a special honor” to be part of the ceremony. They were among 149 students and 22 area high school coaches at the conference, which was designed to help students become leaders within their teams and school. The con- ference presented an opportunity for youth to develop lasting rela- tionships with students from a variety of schools and backgrounds. It presented an opportunity for youth to leave the athletic field of competition and collaborate with others in developing strategies that build strong assets among youth. Paul Perrone, Red Ribbon chairman and Boylan’s varsity girls basketball coach, was the coordinator of the conference, which he started in 1996. Since then, more than 50 confer- ences have been held, training 5,500 who have attended. (Photo provided)
