The Conference of European Justice and Peace Commissions is a network of 31 national Justice and Peace Commissions, which are mandated by their bishops' conferences. The gathering, which is themed “On Spiritual Roots and Political Fruits,” is a pilgrimage for justice and peace and care of Creation, 22-25 September. It took place at the Taizé monastic community. Cardinal Peter Turkson, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Promotion of Integral Human Development, attended the first two days of the gathering, and Rev. Claire Sixte-Gateuille, National Secretary for International relations of The United Protestant Church in France and delegate of CEC adressed the audience as well. Cecilia Dall’Oglio, Italian Justice and Peace Commission and GCCM European Manger, introduced the symbolic action for Season of Creation and delegates of National commissions of Justice and Peace, the attending bishops and the brothers of Taizé physically enacted their commitment to care for Creation. All removed their shoes, standing barefoot on Earth to demonstrate radical renewal of a connection with Creation. Participants then placed soil taken from wounded sites in their countries into a container, symbolizing unity in the face of common social and environmental devastation. On the very first day of the year, the Church celebrates the solemnity of Mary Mother of God, a title given to the Virgin Mary during the Council of Ephesus in 431, entrusting the entire year to the motherly care of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pope Francis says that the love of the mothers is the foundation of humanity and the cure for a world often divided and filled with bitterness. He praises mothers for the “heroism” they show in self-giving, strength in compassion, wisdom in meekness and for the loving accompaniment of their children. A world that looks to the future without a mother’s gaze is shortsighted. It may well increase its profits but it will no longer see others as brothers and sisters. He is indeed amazed by the Mother of God who was deeply united with her son Jesus and journeyed with Him throughout His life on earth and beyond with her admirable motherly qualities. He recommends us to ask Mary for “the grace to be amazed at the God of surprises” as 2020 gets started. May she bless the path of every man and woman in this year that is just beginning. It will be good precisely in the measure in which each person welcomes God’s goodness which Jesus came to bring into the world.

I extend my prayers and blessings that the Good Lord may continue to bless all of us, lead us and make us ready to surrender to His will throughout this year. Stepping into another year, should call us to introspect our past, take stock of our present and march ahead with a new hope of growing closer to HIM, the source of our true joy and peace. On the first day of the year we celebrate our Blessed Mother as the ‘Mother of God.’ She becomes our Mother who is tender and lowly, poor in material goods and rich in love, free of sin and united to Jesus, surrendered her entire self to God and pondered everything in Silence. As her children, we look at her on the first day of the year to begin anew and to march ahead with her motherly protection.     “Certificates” for Auschwitz Yehoshua Büchler Introduction In the spring of 1944, Yaakov (Benito) Rosenberg and Moshe Weiss, activists in the He-Halutz (Zionist-pioneer) underground in Slovakia, managed to reach Palestine via Hungary. After a brief stay at Kibbutz Haogen, the two immigrants gave the Yishuv leadership and Ha-Kibbutz ha-Artzi a detailed report about the plight of the Jews in Slovakia and other countries. They reported about the deportations and presented information that had accumulated in Slovakia about the extermination camps. Rosenberg also gave Jewish Agency officials a list of fifty-one names, mainly prisoners in Auschwitz-Birkenau and several prisoners in Majdanek and Theresienstadt. His request was unusual. He asked that these officials urgently issue “certificates” - immigration visas to mandatory Palestine - to the Jews on the list, foremost those interned in Auschwitz.1 The list that Rosenberg gave the Jewish Agency Immigration Department - which included personal details (names, serial numbers, residential blocks, etc.) - had been composed on the basis of addresses that the deportees had written in letters they had sent from the camps to Slovakia from late August 1942 on. At that time these addresses had been used for the shipments of parcels from Portugal and other countries to prisoners in Auschwitz-Birkenau and other camps.2 When youth-movement activists discovered that visas previously sent to various locations, such as Bergen-Belsen, had been quite 1 Yaakov Rosenberg debarked in Haifa on March 5, 1944. Ale Čulenovo srdce, horiace vždy toľkou láskou k svojmu národu, už dávno prestalo biť a nemohlo sa dožiť tejto ra­ dosti! Yy však, ktorí teraz opúšťate túto školu a prekračujete prah nového života, nesmiete nikdy zabudnúť, že boli ste žiakmi toho ústavu, posväteného bolestnou tradícou našej ná­ rodnej minulosti, toho starého slovenského katolíckeho ústa­ vu, v ktorom i dnes žije nesmrteľný duch Martina Čulena. Vy všetci vyrástli ste už ako slobodní synovia oslobode­ nej vlasti a vari ste ani nevedeli dobre precítiť a jasne chápať krutosť osudu a trpkosť utrpenia, ktoré národ náš znášal ešte v nedávnej minulosti. I toto Vaše vykročenie z ústavu môže byť smelé a nebojácne, lebo veď prichádzate medzi svojich, ku ktorým hlásiť sa môžete hrdo, a ktorí Yás s láskou uvíta­ jú ako svojich. Jednako malý náš ústav, v skromných múroch ktorého ste vyrástli, a jeho bohaté slovenské tradície nech Vám vždy pripomínajú ťažké chvíle poroby, ktoré národ náš pozbavený všetkých svojich práv prežíval.
