Insights on the Torah Gem of the Week By Haham Amram Assayag äøåúä ìò úåðåéòø "Whether on the road or in an argument, when a Shabat Shemot person sees red, it's time to stop" When Yosef, and his brothers and their entire generation passed away, the Jews numbered an abundant and strong population. Nevertheless, the galut started with a new King who would not remember Yosef, the benefactor of Egypt. This Par’oh feels threatened by the Jewish nation and decides to enslave the Jews and to embitter their lives with hard labour, to break any possible resistance. Realizing that the more he afflicted them the more they multiplied, Par’oh calls on the Jewish midwives commanding them to kill any boy that is born. The midwives obviously refused, giving as a justification the fact that Jewish women deliver their own babies even before the midwife arrives. Par’oh, finding no acceptable solution, charges all his people that every son that is born must be cast to the river. – Yochebed, married to Amram, becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son at the beginning of the seventh month of her pregnancy, whom she hides for three months. Unable to keep hidden any longer, she puts him in an ark of bulrushes and placed it in the reeds by the river’s bank. Par’oh’s daughter, on her way to bathe, sees the ark and immediately knowing that he belongs to the Jews. Miriam, the baby’s sister, who had kept watch all along, offers to find a nursing woman from the Jews who would nurse the child. Miriam runs home and gets her mother who accepts Par’oh’s daughter’s proposition. Yochebed takes the baby to her own home to nurse him and care for him and when the child is weaned and grown she brings him back to the Princess’s home. Par’oh’s daughter takes him as a son into the palace and names him Moshe. –Moshe grows up, and deciding one day to go out to his brothers and see their burden, he sees and Egyptian hitting a Jew. Moshe looks around and finding nobody in the vicinity, kills the Egyptian and hides him in the sand. The second day he goes out and sees two Jews fighting and rebuking the wrong one. Moshe learns from the latter that people knew that he killed the Egyptian. Par’oh finds out and wants to kill Moshe, who flees from Par’oh to the land of Midyan. –The priest of Midyan has seven daughters who shepherd their father’s flock. One day when Moshe was sitting by a well, he sees the other shepherds driving away the women who he immediately helps. The women tell their father who proceeds to invite Moshe to live with them, and gives him his daughter Tzipora as a wife, who bears him two sons. One day, when Moshe was shepherding the flock of Yitro, he sees a fire burning out of the midst of a thorn bush and the bush was not being consumed. Moshe turns aside to see the great sight and G-d calls him telling him to take his shoes off as he is standing on holy ground. Hashem tells him that he is the G-d of his forefathers, and He has seen the wretchedness and sufferings of the Jews in Egypt. He proceeds to inform Moshe that He wants to redeem them and bring them into the land of Canaan and it is His wish that Moshe to be His messenger to Par’oh. adaptations from daily shiurim given by Rabbi Azoulay and Rabbi Kadoch at the SKC וַיְהִי בַיָּמִיםהָּרַ בִים הָּהֵם,וַיָּמָּת מֶלְֶךמִצְרַ יִם, וַיֵָאנְחּו בְנֵי-יִשְרָּ אֵל מִן-הָּעֲבֹדָּה, :Rabbi Azoulay: This week we learned the importance of one of Rabbi Kadoch וַיִזְעָּקּו; וַתַעַלשַוְעָּתָּם אֶל-הָּאֱֹלהִים, מִן-הָּעֲבֹדָּ ה our core Mitzvot and that is Hilchot Nidah, Family Purity.
