===== RABBINIC REFLECTIONS =====

I am not much of a bike rider. From time to time I do attempt to ride but, thankfully, not too often. After a long ride, which I define as half an hour, my legs begin to hurt and I get winded. Also, the bicycle seat seems to be a bit too small for my posterior. Yet, bicycle riding is probably one of the simplest motions in all of sports. Basically, all you have to do is pedal, steer and make sure you don't fall down. Bike riding generally does not involve the same skill level as basketball, foot ball, tennis, baseball, and other competitive sports, which require not only a sim ple motion, but also dexterity and some athletic ability. Even track and field 8:00pm events involve a certain amount of physical aptitude. In track and field, timing is important as well as the ability to precisely sense the movements of your body in juxtaposition to everyone else. Friday, SepteIDber 16 8:00pm Bike riding not only involves the simplest of motions, but you also have tPe 8BABBAT SERvo AND advantage of the bike to help you succeed, whereas in walking and running it is BoAIDAlLATION INsT you against the world with nothing in between to negotiate gravity. Even though competitive biking could be considered somewhat boring, tens Saturday, September 17 10:30 am of millions of people across the world took tremendous delight in Lance Bat Mitzvah Armstrong's winning of his seventh To ur De France. This accomplishment is con NatalieBernstein sidered one of the greatest in all recorded sports ... especially because Lance Armstrong's personal story is so compelling. His name has become synonymous with courage and July, August, September superhuman effort. BirthdayBlessings So even though bicycle riding requires the simplest of movements, attaining simplicity in many of life's pursuits is often difficult. Lance Armstrong proved that Friday, September 30 8:00 pm simple is not so simple. With the simplest of movements, he was able to rivet the SHABBAT SERVICE attention of the entire world to a sport that is often relegated to the back burner of the sports page. He overcame the complex vicissitudes of life by mastering the rudimentary rotation of his legs. also encourages the simple path in life. Even though Judaism can be a highly intricate faith, especially when considering its dauntingly intellectual demands, still the actual practice of the tradition, and what the tradition demands of the adherent, can be quite simple. Two thousand years ago, Rabbi Ta rton stat ed that to teach someone a complex task might be easier than teaching some one simply how to relate to others. In the book of Deuteronomy, which we are reading this month, we find this quotation, "For this commandment which I com mand thee this day, it is not too hard for thee, neither is it far off. It is not in heav en that thou shouldest say, 'Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, and make us to hear it, that we may do it?' Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, 'Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, and make us to hear it, that we may do it?' But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it."

The brief service is meaningful to the residents, many of whom are still members of our Congregation. They enjoy even a brief visit with other members of Har Sinai.

LUNCH AND lEARN

Tuesdays at 12 noon (BeginningSeptember 13) This year, the group and Rabbi Pollack will be studying one of the greatest and most controversial works of litera ture, the Biblical book, The Song of Songs. Known in Hebrew as Shir HaShirim, it is a biblical collection of erotic love poetry, a dialogue between two lovers. It was seen by the Rabbis, however, as a metaphor for the greatest love story of all, that between God and the people Israel. We will be using the text from the Union of Reform Judaism Press which includes both modern and ancient commentaries. There will be lively discussion as we plum met the depths of this masterpiece. Bring your own lunch; we provide the dessert.

HOME STuDY GROUP

(Beginning Wednesday, September28, at 8:00 pm) Home of Rita Allen The Home Study Group, which meets in congregants' homes, USUALLY on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, has been a staple of Har Sinai for close to forty years and has proven to be one of the most enduring adult education experiences in Te mple life. Please join us for faSCinating discussions on current events with a Jewish twist. The topics range from politics to legal decisions that affect our daily lives. There is rarely a dull moment when we dis cuss everything from privacy issues to the separation of Church and State. We often review the latest news stories as we try to give many contemporary issues perspective and meaning. The September/October meeting will be held at the home of Rita Allen in Yardley. To RSVP, for directions, or more infor mation, call Rita at 215-295-0115.

ExTREME STuDY Saturdays from 9:15 to 10:15 am (BeginningSeptember 10) There is no To rah Study group of this kind anywhere. Rabbi Pollack will be giving his utterly unique view of the Torah portion relying on just about all of the ancient and modern commentaries. These fascinating discussions get to the heart of the Torah portions and beyond. This is truly the essence of studying the Bible as adults because no topic or opinion is off limits. If you want to be exposed to a view of the Bible and Judaism that you can't get any where else, this class is the place to be.

SPECIAL -vEAR OF SHABBAr SERVICES TO BEGIN SEPTEMBER 23rd

The Long Range Advisory Committee of our congregation has designated this year '7he Year of Shabbat. /I Towards the goal of increasing the spirituality and meaning of Shabbat, a number of unique services will be presented to the congre gation. Some of these services are entied Kehilat Shabbat or services that encourage greater involvement from the wor shipper. The first of these services will be held on Friday, September 23, at 8:00 PM. The theme of this first Kehilat serv ice will be "Shabbat." As in all Kehilat services, a number of members of our Congregation will help lead the service with contemporary Jewish music mixed in with the traditional favorites. We hope the relaxed atmosphere of this style of worship will encourage the congregation's participotion in the service.

Other services are also planned for the "Year of Shabbat" emphasizing educational and musical themes. We know that everyone will want to join us in this wonderful experience which will help to transform the spiritual landscape of our con gregation.

As we now begin to think more seriously about our relocation, I have to think about the library's holdings. Many books have been discarded for various reasons; these are being donated to institutions for their research collections. Four boxes were sent to Harvard, and we have received an appreciative letter from Elizabeth Vernon, of the Judaica Division of Harvard College Library. In the near future, books will also be going to San Diego State University and the University of Arizona at Tempe, Arizona. It is my responsibility to work through these discarded books, just as, elsewhere, in our building, others will be examining and inventorying everything that we have acquired in over 70 years on Bellevue Avenue.
