In these series are published original articles and monographs dealing with the collections and work of the Museum and setting forth newly acquired facts in the fields of anthropology, biology, geology, history, and technology. Copies of each publication are dis- tributed to libraries and scientific organizations and to specialists and others interested in the various subjects. The Proceedings, begun in 1878, are intended for the publication, in separate form, of shorter papers. These are gathered in volumes, octavo in size, with the publi- cation date of each paper recorded in the table of con- tents of the volume. In the Bulletin series, the first of which was issued in 1875, a,ppear longer, separate publications consisting of monographs (occasionally in several parts) and vol- umes in which are collected works on related subjects. Bulletins are either octavo or quarto in size, depending on the needs of the presentation. Since 1902, papers re- lating to the botanical collections of the Museum have been published in the Bulletin series under the head- ing Contributions from the united States National Herbarium. This work forms number 297 of the Bulletin series. Frank A. This study investigates morphometric and genetic differentiation in the T. graeca complex in Turkey using the densest sampling to date. We sequenced two mt-DNA loci (ND4 and cyt b) of 199 samples and combined them with previously published data. Bayesian analysis yielded six well-supported clades, four of which occur in Turkey (ibera, terrestris, armeniaca and buxtoni). The armeniaca mtDNA clade locally represents a morphometrically distinct burrowing ecomorph. However, previous studies have shown that individuals outside Turkey possessing armeniaca mtDNA lack the distinctive armeniaca morphotype we observed, precluding taxonomic conclusions.

Despite recent phylogenetic studies, the species diversity of this family is unknown and thus, its phylogenetic relationships remain unclear and its taxonomy unstable. We analyzed four mitochondrial (12S, 16S, Cytb, ND4) and one nuclear (c-mos) DNA sequences of Pholidobolus anomalus, Cercosaura manicata boliviana and Cercosaura sp., using the maximum likelihood method to give insights into the phylogenetic relationships of these taxa within Cercosaurinae.

We present an inventory list of the herpetofauna of the Araripe bioregion by compiling data from zoological col- lections and available literature. We found 31 species of anurans of which nine are new records for the study area. Regard- ing reptiles, we found 78 species of which 14 are new records for the study area. Mabuya frenata was recorded for the first time in the State of Ceará. Our results show a higher diversity of reptiles and amphibians for the Araripe bioregion than previously supposed, reinforcing the need for establishing a new protected area in the region.

  • Evolution and Ecology of Lizard Body Sizes PAPER Shai Meiri
Global Ecology and Biogeography, (Global Ecol. Biogeogr.) (2008) 17, 724–734 Blackwell Publishing Ltd RESEARCH Evolution and ecology of lizard body sizes PAPER Shai Meiri NERC Centre for Population Biology, Imperial ABSTRACT College London, Silwood Park, Ascot, Berkshire Aim Body size is instrumental in influencing animal physiology, morphology, SL5 7PY, UK ecology and evolution, as well as extinction risk. I examine several hypotheses regarding the influence of body size on lizard evolution and extinction risk, assessing whether body size influences, or is influenced by, species richness, herbivory, island dwelling and extinction risk. Location World-wide. Methods I used literature data and measurements of museum and live specimens to estimate lizard body size distributions. Results I obtained body size data for 99% of the world’s lizard species. The body size–frequency distribution is highly modal and right skewed and similar distributions characterize most lizard families and lizard assemblages across biogeographical realms. There is a strong negative correlation between mean body size within families and species richness. Herbivorous lizards are larger than omnivorous and carnivorous ones, and aquatic lizards are larger than non-aquatic species. Diurnal activity is associated with small body size. Insular lizards tend towards both extremes of the size spectrum. Extinction risk increases with body size of species for which risk has been assessed. Main conclusions Small size seems to promote fast diversification of disparate body plans. The absence of mammalian predators allows insular lizards to attain larger body sizes by means of release from predation and allows them to evolve into the top predator niche. Island living also promotes a high frequency of herbivory, which is also associated with large size.
