Making her cabaret debut, Malone will salute 14 of her favorite Broadway actresses who have been an influence on her during her musical theatre career. The audience will hear selections made famous by Fanny Brice, Carol Burnett, Betty Buckley, Carol Channing, Judy Holliday, Angela Lansbury, Patti LuPone, Mary Martin, Ethel Merman, Liza Minnelli, Bernadette Peters, Barbra Streisand, Elaine Stritch, and Nancy Walker. On making her cabaret debut: “The idea of putting together an original cabaret act where you’re standing on stage for ninety minutes straight has always sounded daunting to me,” Malone said. “I’ve had the idea for this particular cabaret format for a few years. I felt the time was right to challenge myself, and I couldn’t be more proud to debut this cabaret on the very stage that offered me my first musical theatre experience as a nine-year-old in the Moonlight’s very first musical Oliver! directed by Kathy Brombacher.” Malone can relate to the fact that the leading ladies she has chosen to celebrate are all attached to iconic comedic roles. “I learned at a very young age that getting laughs is golden,” she said. -

humanities Article The American Film Musical and the Place(less)ness of Entertainment: Cabaret’s “International Sensation” and American Identity in Crisis Florian Zitzelsberger English and American Literary Studies, Universität Passau, 94032 Passau, Germany; fl[email protected] Received: 20 March 2019; Accepted: 14 May 2019; Published: 19 May 2019 Abstract: This article looks at cosmopolitanism in the American film musical through the lens of the genre’s self-reflexivity. By incorporating musical numbers into its narrative, the musical mirrors the entertainment industry mise en abyme, and establishes an intrinsic link to America through the act of (cultural) performance. Drawing on Mikhail Bakhtin’s notion of the chronotope and its recent application to the genre of the musical, I read the implicitly spatial backstage/stage duality overlaying narrative and number—the musical’s dual registers—as a means of challenging representations of Americanness, nationhood, and belonging. The incongruities arising from the segmentation into dual registers, realms complying with their own rules, destabilize the narrative structure of the musical and, as such, put the semantic differences between narrative and number into critical focus. A close reading of the 1972 film Cabaret, whose narrative is set in 1931 Berlin, shows that the cosmopolitanism of the American film musical lies in this juxtaposition of non-American and American (at least connotatively) spaces and the self-reflexive interweaving of their associated registers and narrative levels. If metalepsis designates the transgression of (onto)logically separate syntactic units of film, then it also symbolically constitutes a transgression and rejection of national boundaries. In the case of Cabaret, such incongruities and transgressions eventually undermine the notion of a stable American identity, exposing the American Dream as an illusion produced by the inherent heteronormativity of the entertainment industry. -

‘LOVE, AGAIN’ CAST BIOS TERI POLO (Chloe Baker) – Teri Polo is best known for her role as Robert De Niro’s daughter, Pam Byrnes, in the “Meet the Parents” feature films. She recently starred in “The Little Fockers,” the third installment of the movie franchise and completed production on the feature “Beyond” opposite Jon Voight. Polo has also recently filmed the Lifetime movie “We Have Your Husband” and had a recurring role on “Law & Order: Los Angeles.” She played the character of Casey Winters, wife of Detective Rex Winters, played by Skeet Ulrich. In 2011, Polo starred in the ABC series “Man Up.” Polo’s other recent credits include the feature film “The Hole,” directed by Joe Dante and the NBC miniseries “The Storm,” both released in 2010. Polo’s film credits include “Beyond Borders” co-starring Angelina Jolie, the suspense thriller “The Unsaid” opposite Andy Garcia and “Domestic Disturbance” opposite John Travolta and Vince Vaughn. She co-starred opposite De Niro and Stiller in “Meet the Parents,” for which she won a People’s Choice Award and its sequel “Meet the Fockers.” Originally from Dover, Delaware, Polo began her performing career as a dancer. By age 13, she was attending New York’s School of Ballet. “Something’s happening here”: Bonnie and Clyde and the Sixties Bruce Campbell Something’s happening here What it is ain’t exactly clear (Buffalo Springfield) It was a tumultuous time; 1967, the Age of Aquarius, the time of Flower Power, free love, and hippies.1 There were “Be-Ins” on both coasts. In the Haight-Ashbury section of San Francisco, there was a celebration called the “Summer of Love,” and a top-ten song advised “if you’re going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair” (McKenzie). Young people were encouraged to “turn on, tune in, drop out,” and the nation suddenly learned about LSD.2 A generation just coming of age called for “peace and love.” Others wanted quicker, more violent change. Young men were being sent to Vietnam to fight what many considered an unjust war. Figures from the US National Archives show that more than eleven thousand young Americans died in Vietnam in 1967. The next year, the number would rise to more than eighteen thousand. The war was costing taxpayers billions of dollars a year, and each month, thousands of young men were being drafted into military service.3 When there were demonstrations against the draft and the war, protestors were met by police and National Guard troops. Groups like the Weathermen began using bombs to strike at “the system.”4 Blacks seeking equality grew frustrated with the slow progress of Martin Luther King’s nonviolent approach to achieving racial equality. In the summer of 1967, race riots plagued Newark, Detroit, and other cities. -

CHAPTER 11.19 ART Garth Evans But, Hands Have Eyes: Six decades of sculpture Until 26.01.20 ‘But, Hands Have Eyes’ is a solo exhibition featuring six decades of sculpture. Alongside works produced in the UK in the 1960s and 70s, Evans also presents a body of work for their UK premiere, that he has produced in the United States since his move there in 1981. The work of Garth Evans is integral to the history of British sculpture. Experimenting with the potential of scale, weight, medium and form, Evans’ work comprises both a formal and conceptual approach. He is always interested in interrogating established boundaries and, as a result, his sculptures are made from a diverse range of materials including ceramics, steel, leather and fibreglass. Evans states that many of his works, even when most abstract, are “triggers for, and containers of, particular identifiable memories”.
