Bets Malone Makes Cabaret Debut at ClubM at the Moonlight Amphitheatre on Jan. 13 with One-Woman Show “Broadway the BROAD Way”

Vista, CA (January 4, 2018) – Moonlight Amphitheatre’s ClubM opens its 2018 series of cabaret concerts at its intimate indoor venue on Sat., Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. with Bets Malone: Broadway the BROAD Way. Making her cabaret debut, Malone will salute 14 of her favorite Broadway actresses who have been an influence on her during her musical theatre career. The audience will hear selections made famous by Fanny Brice, Carol Burnett, Betty Buckley, Carol Channing, Judy Holliday, Angela Lansbury, Patti LuPone, Mary Martin, Ethel Merman, Liza Minnelli, Bernadette Peters, Barbra Streisand, Elaine Stritch, and Nancy Walker.
On making her cabaret debut: “The idea of putting together an original cabaret act where you’re standing on stage for ninety minutes straight has always sounded daunting to me,” Malone said. “I’ve had the idea for this particular cabaret format for a few years. I felt the time was right to challenge myself, and I couldn’t be more proud to debut this cabaret on the very stage that offered me my first musical theatre experience as a nine-year-old in the Moonlight’s very first musical Oliver! directed by Kathy Brombacher.”
Malone can relate to the fact that the leading ladies she has chosen to celebrate are all attached to iconic comedic roles. “I learned at a very young age that getting laughs is golden,” she said. “The best way to connect as people is through laughter. If you can make them laugh, you get their attention, and then you can make them cry.”
Collaborating with Malone is Elan McMahan, musical director and pianist. The two have enjoyed a long association as performing partners at the Moonlight and other stages.
Tickets for the cabaret are $60 which includes reserved table seating, tray-passed appetizers, and meet and greet; $30 for reserved seating; and $20 for standing-room only at a belly bar. Tickets are on sale through VisTix at (760) 724-2110 and online at moonlightstage.com.
Remaining ClubM performances are “An Intimate Evening with Lucie Arnaz” on Feb. 10, and Daebreon Poiema’s cabaret debut in “The Reason Why I Sing” on March 3. Colleen Kollar Smith, Moonlight’s Managing Director, commented, “We are thrilled to develop new cabarets with two of the region’s favorite performers while also welcoming a seasoned cabaret veteran to the ClubM stage. Bets’ esteemed national career combined with her history at the Moonlight are going to make for a one-of-a-kind event. ABOUT BETS MALONE This concert marks Bets Malone’s cabaret debut. Bets literally grew up on the Moonlight stage with her entire family working onstage and behind the scenes for much of the Moonlight’s life. After high school, she ventured out and has performed all over the United States, in Europe, and on the high seas. She originated the role of Suzy Simpson in The Marvelous Wonderettes in New York and can be heard on three Wonderette cast recordings. Additionally, she can be heard on the cast recording of Honky Tonk Laundry. She just completed her fifth year as Mama Who in Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas at the Old Globe Theatre. ABOUT ELAN McMAHAN Elan works in the arts community as a pianist, musical director, and conductor. She is resident musical director for Moonlight Stage Productions, having provided musical direction for over 50 productions. Elan also works for The Old Globe; her most recent project: Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Elan’s work at Moonlight and the Globe has received critical acclaim, including the San Diego Critics Circle Craig Noel Award for Outstanding Musical Direction in both 2012 and 2015. Elan holds music degrees from BYU and the St. Louis Conservatory of Music, has performed as soloist with several orchestras, and is an associate faculty member at MiraCosta College. She is grateful for a lifelong friendship with the incredible Bets Malone.
