After the company closed, he established and ran the Pacific Coast News Bureau for the dissemination of Negro news of national importance (1923-27). He started the Negro in film collection about the time he started working for Lincoln. The collection consists of newspaper clippings, photographs, publicity material, posters, correspondence, and business records related to early Black film companies, Black films, films with Black casts, and Black musicians, sports figures and entertainers. Oscar Micheaux, Film Pioneer is one of seven filmsin the "Were You There" series produced by Carol Lawrence (the others include The Black We st, The Cotton Club, The Facts of Life, Portrait of Two Artists, Sports Profile, and When the Animals Talked). This film's story revolves around Bee Freeman's (the Sepia Mae West) and Lorenzo Tucker's (the black Valentino) recollections of their relationships with Micheaux and their perceptions of his character. Danny Glover plays the role of Oscar Micheaux, Richard Harder is shown as the young Lorenzo Tucker, and Janice Morgan portrays the vamp that was Bee Freeman in Shuffle Along. The fi lm is technologically superior-better than anything that Micheaux ever produced between 1918 and 1948-and visually pleasing. The only significantproblem with Oscar Micheaux, Film Pioneer is the overall veracity of the information provided by Freeman and Tucker. Three examples will suffice: Freeman says that "In South America they went crazy over all [of Micheaux's] pictures"; what she probably meant was the Southern United States, which is the truth. Tucker says that Paul Robeson was in the Homesteader (19 18); Robeson was in only one Micheaux film and that was Body and Soul (1925). He also says that God's Step Children (1938) was Micheaux's fi nal fi lm, but there were at least three others after God's Step Children, including Th e No torious Elinor Lee (1940), Lying Lips (1940), and The Betrayal (1948), which was a flop. -

Today, he is probably best-known for his short story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and his satirical lexicon The Devil's Dictionary. His vehemence as a critic, his motto "Nothing matters" and the sardonic view of human nature that informed his work all earned him the nickname "Bitter Bierce". Despite his reputation as a searing critic, Bierce was known to encourage younger writers, including poet George Sterling and fiction writer W. C. Morrow. Bierce employed a distinctive style of writing, especially in his stories. His style often embraces an abrupt beginning, dark imagery, vague references to time, limited descriptions, impossible events and the theme of war. In 1913, Bierce traveled to Mexico to gain first-hand experience of the Mexican Revolution. While traveling with rebel troops, he disappeared without a trace. <b>Biography</b> Bierce was born at Horse Cave Creek in Meigs County, Ohio to Marcus Aurelius Bierce (1799–1876) and Laura Sherwood Bierce. His mother was a descendant of William Bradford. His parents were a poor but literary couple who instilled in him a deep love for books and writing. The boy grew up in Kosciusko County, Indiana, attending high school at the county seat, Warsaw. He was the tenth of thirteen children whose father gave all of them names beginning with the letter "A". In order of birth, the Bierce siblings were Abigail, Amelia, Ann, Addison, Aurelius, Augustus, Almeda, Andrew, Albert, Ambrose, Arthur, Adelia, and Aurelia. -

Her critically acclaimed drama The Ballad of Emmett Till premiered at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago and was awarded a Eugene O'Neill National Playwrights Conference fellowship and the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Award for Best Play. The Ballad made its West Coast premiere at the Fountain Theatre in Los Angeles, garnering six Ovation Awards, including Best Production; four Drama Desk Critics' Circle Awards, including Best Production; and the Backstage Garland Award for Best Playwriting. After numerous critically acclaimed regional productions, Bayeza expanded The Ballad into The Till Trilogy, recounting the epic Civil Rights saga in three distinct dramas. Running Head: ADJUSTING THE COLOR: THE SHATTERING OF BLACKNESS 1 Adjusting the Color: The Shattering of Blackness through Race Films 1916-1929 Paul Grammatico San Jose State University ADJUSTING THE COLOR: THE SHATTERING OF BLACKNESS 2 Abstract This paper examines the Race film genre from 1916 through 1929. This paper also examines the early motion pictures of Thomas Edison and the introduction of racial stereotypes of African –Americans, how D.W. Griffith’s film Birth of a Nation caused outrage in the black community with its racist agenda, the rise of Race films to show a more accurate representation of black life, the reasons for its decline, and how we must obtain and preserve the “lost” films and the films we have already discovered in order to preserve this part of American history. Keywords: film, race, stereotype, director, producer, cinema, theatre, preservation ADJUSTING THE COLOR: THE SHATTERING OF BLACKNESS 3 Introduction Since the first motion picture created by Thomas Edison in 1894, African-Americans bared the brunt of stereotypes in various nickelodeons displaying short films created by different white directors as film aesthetics continued to grow. When director D.W. Griffith released the first epic motion picture The Birth of a Nation, he showed African-Americans (portrayed by white actors in blackface) as the following stereotypes: The Coon, the Mammy, the Tom, and his own creation, the brutal Buck. These hurtful and degrading stereotypes gave rise to African- Americans creating a more realistic version of black life through “Race” films. The term “Race films” as scholar Pearl Bowser states in the 2006 commentary track on the Oscar Micheaux DVD Body and Soul (1925): “The term Race film comes from the Chicago Defender – an African-American newspaper at the time. -
