CAPITOL AND GROGXDS. The Capito-l building is in good condition. The driveways treated with the Tarvia process last year are showing good re sults. The walk along Capitol Avenue is being replaC'cd with new material and neC'essary repairs are being made npon the others. The Commission of Sculpture, in furtherance of their plan for completing the ornamentation of the north front of the Capi tol, have already placed in position two statues, one of Gov ernor .Tohn Haynes, by Richard E . Brooks, sculptor, and one of Governor ,Tohn ·winthrop, by Paul ·wayland Bartlett, sculp tor, at a cost of $7,000 each. A scene "An Attack on Indian Fort," by Bartlett, is being cut on the northeast tympanum, and two other statues, one of Deputy Governor Roger Ludlow, by Brooks, and one of Theophilus Eaton, Governor of , by Bartlett, arc to be placed in position soon. J\iemorials to our late United Sbates Senators, ,Toseph R. Haw ly and Orville H . Plrrtt, were authorized hy the last legislatnre. This work, which is in the hands of sculptors to whom the con tracts were awarded by the special commission having the mat ter in charge, is progressing satisfactorily. The State Arsenal and Armory upon the western addition to the Capitol grounds has the walls completed and the roof is being put on . The State Librm·y and Supreme Court building Col\fPTROLLER's RRPORT, 1908. 5 on the south side of Capitol avenue, another addition to the Capitol grounds, has excavations and foundations well started. Thus our beautiful Capitol becomes the center of a well planned group of public buildings.

Respcctfnlly submitted,

.. 'Ud~ Comptroller.
