Buhlmann (SREL), and Jeff Camper (Francis Marion University) DESCRIPTION Taxonomy and Basic Descriptions This guild contains 4 primary species: the flatwoods salamander, Carolina gopher frog, dwarf siren, and tiger salamander; and 2 secondary species: upland chorus frog and northern cricket frog. Primary species are high priority species that are directly tied to a unifying feature or habitat. Secondary species are priority species that may occur in, or be related to, the unifying feature at some time in their life. The flatwoods salamander—in particular, the frosted flatwoods salamander— and tiger salamander are members of the family Ambystomatidae, the mole salamanders. Both species are large; the tiger salamander is the largest terrestrial salamander in the eastern United States. The Photo by SC DNR flatwoods salamander can reach lengths of 9 to 12 cm (3.5 to 4.7 in.) as an adult. This species is dark, ranging from black to dark brown with silver-white reticulated markings (Conant and Collins 1991; Martof et al. 1980). The tiger salamander can reach lengths of 18 to 20 cm (7.1 to 7.9 in.) as an adult; maximum size is approximately 30 cm (11.8 in.). -

Tribological Analysis of Ventral Scale Structure in a Python Regius in Relation to Laser Textured Surfaces H. A. El Mansori Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Arts et Métiers, 151 Boulevard de l'Hôpital, 75013 PARIS, France ABSTRACT Laser Texturing is one of the leading technologies applied to modify surface topography. To date, however, a standardized procedure to generate deterministic textures is virtually non- existent. In nature, especially in squamata, there are many examples of deterministic structured textures that allow species to control friction and condition their tribological response for efficient function. In this work, we draw a comparison between industrial surfaces and reptilian surfaces. We chose the python regius species as a bio-analogue with a deterministic surface. We first study the structural make up of the ventral scales of the snake (both construction and metrology). We further compare the metrological features of the ventral scales to experimentally recommended performance indicators of industrial surfaces extracted from open literature. The results indicate the feasibility of engineering a Laser Textured Surface based on the reptilian ornamentation constructs. It is shown that the metrological features, key to efficient function of a rubbing deterministic surface, are already optimized in the reptile. We further show that optimization in reptilian surfaces is based on synchronizing surface form, textures and aspects to condition the frictional response. Mimicking reptilian surfaces, we argue, may form a design methodology potentially capable of generating advanced deterministic surface constructs capable of efficient tribological function. -

Region 2 Other Emphasis Species List Lined Snake (Tropidoclonion lineatum) Recommendation Rationale: Not R2 SS, But Should Be Considered For Other Emphasis Species Lists This prairie species is considered secure within the heart of its range, including eastern Nebraska (could extend to Samuel R. McKelvie and Halsey units) and Kansas. Its imperiled ranking in South Dakota is no doubt due to its very limited distribution in the extreme southeast corner of the state. In Colorado, the species has been found in the Denver-Boulder area, out into the central and southeastern plains. Because of its secretive habits, it is anticipated that it may be even more widely spread in eastern Colorado. It is known from the Comanche National Grasslands and could ultimately be found on or near the Pawnee. While populations may have suffered along the rapidly developing Front Range in Colorado, and as a consequence of riparian habitat degradation, the species seems generally tolerant of habitat modification, and remains at least locally common. Consequently, at this time we see no compelling reason to put on the list. However, the species has several life history characteristics that could put it at risk. Therefore, we recommend that the status of the species be monitored by our Plains units and treated as a species of local management concern where problems are identified. When properly prepared and identified, a shed snake skin can be used as an important voucher; the morphological descriptions of the shed skins may be critical for taxonomic research, as well as studies of snake ecology and conservation. However, few convenient/ expeditious methods or techniques to identify shed snake skins in specific areas have been developed. In this study, we collected and examined a total of 1,260 shed skin samples - including 322 samples from neonates/ juveniles and 938 from subadults/adults - from 53 snake species in Taiwan and adjacent islands, and developed the first guide to identify them. To the naked eye or from scanned images, the sheds of almost all species could be identified if most of the shed was collected. The key features that aided in identification included the patterns on the sheds and scale morphology. -

BULLETIN INFORMATION Catesbeiana is published twice a year by the Virginia Herpetological Society. Membership is open to all individuals interested in the study of amphibians and reptiles and includes a subscription to Catesbeiana, two newsletters, and admission to all meetings. Annual dues for regular membership are $15.00 (see application form on last page for other membership categories). Payments received after September 1 of any given year will apply to membership for the following calendar year. HERPETOLOGICAL ARTWORK Herpetological artwork is welcomed for publication in Catesbeiana. We need drawings and encourage members to send us anything appropriate, especially their own work.
