Well, as we approach the start of a new school year, I’ve been thinking a lot about that phrase and how it applies to education. Put another way, a little learning can take you unexpected places – maybe even from an academic to a career track and back again, or vice versa. There’s no either/or about it since one often leads to and supplements the other. That’s certainly been true for Interpreting student Isabelle De Breu, who started her Brookdale studies on the credit side, studying math and science while working as a server. Though she didn’t know yet what she wanted to do professionally, Isabelle did know she wanted to use her talent to help people in her native Brazil. When she heard about our Interpreting program, she saw it as a possible way to achieve her goal. Not only did she sign on for the class, she so impressed her instructor that she was selected to speak at the CPS Spring 2017 Completion Ceremony. I am still inspired recalling her words about the importance of persistence, and of faith and family, and of knowing that, no matter what challenges you face, help is available if you’ll only ask. I remembered those words when she applied for the scholarship my family started in my dad’s memory. In 2018, Isabelle became the first recipient of the Paul Ali Memorial Scholarship. Since then she’s become, more than that, a friend – someone I check in with regularly and whose progress I look forward to following for years to come. Where will she go from here? Possibly, after finishing up her Brookdale associate degree on to Rutgers for her bachelor degree. Then again, having seen the impact breaking the language barrier can have, says Isabelle, she may apply for a Brazilian work-study grant that would allow her to teach English in exchange for free tuition. Given the way one thing leads to another, her opportunities are boundless. What is sure is that with every new course Isabelle takes, career or credit – she’ll come away with new knowledge, new skills, new connections, new options. This fall, why not see where a class at Brookdale can take you? Sincerely,

Joan Ali Scocco Dean, Continuing & Professional Studies

After 19 years in the banking and mortgage industry, Joe was ready for a change. When someone at the local SPCA where he’d been volunteering told him about Brook- dale’s Veterinary Assistant program, he decided to give it a try. He’s rarely made a better decision, he says. The course puts you on a fast track to any veterinary “ career. The teachers are highly experienced and credentialed, and the 96 hours of clinical allows you a chance to immerse yourself in various areas and see which you want to focus on.” Like the rest of his class, Joe got a job almost immediately upon completing. As a Vet Tech in Red Bank Veterinary Hospital’s internal medicine department, he assists with procedures from endoscopy to ultrasound to bone-marrow biopsy. And yes, he loves what he does, all right. “Obviously I enjoy working with animals. I also enjoy the fact that in medicine, you’re always learning. And my schedule is more flexible now; I work four days a week instead of five.” Best of all, though, is making a positive difference in pets’ and their owners’ lives. “So at the end of the day, I just like myself and my colleagues a lot more.”

Sandra Carr, Certified Horticulturist

You just have to take “ that small step, take that class, and believe you can make that change. Because you can.”

Growing up, getting her hands dirty was Sandra’s favorite thing. “My grandfather was a passionate gardener, and I loved gardening with him.” She never dreamed she could make a living that way, instead drifting from one unsatisfying office job to another. Then in 2015 she took our Introduction to Horticulture class “just for fun” and was offered a farm stand job by a visiting speaker who noticed her passion. Two years later, enrolling in BCC’s Certified Horticulturist program seemed like the natural next step.

“The course covers everything from plant propagation to proper watering technique in depth, and was exactly what I needed to take my skills up a notch.” By the end, Sandra was fully certified by the American Society of Horticultural Science. “And a career in horti- culture/agriculture had become an attainable goal for me – without the four-year degree I’d always thought I’d need!"

Today, Sandra manages a plot for a local farming operation. And she’s still amazed by how easy it was to turn her passion into a profession.

34 CENTER FOR CAREER DEVELOPMENT FALL 2019 Jazmine Elliott, certified in Microsoft Business Office Skills Jazmine was cashiering at a local supermarket when she heard about Brookdale’s BOSS program. “I thought I was already pretty good at using an office computer, but I also thought the certification would be helpful, because often, knowledge isn’t enough; employers want to see a credential.” Turns out she was half right.

The wonderful “ instructors taught us all sorts of unexpected new ways to use Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel. And the accounting program QuickBooks was entirely new!”

In fact, as big a plus as the certificate was, she says, it was largely due to her new improved skills that she landed a great new job just four days after completing. Now an Obituary Advisor for a local newspaper, she helps family members and funeral homes format and price obituaries before bill- ing them – a slot that might once have seemed the perfect stepping- stone to her dream career. “As a kid I wanted to be a journalist.” Today, though, Jazmine’s Plan A is to return to Brookdale to get her associate’s degree in Computer Science – a goal that, thanks to her new improved salary, finally seems within reach, she says. “A high school diploma didn’t get me where I needed to be. It was the BOSS program that opened the door for me!”
