After taking time to raise her family and being out of practice for a period of time, Susan enrolled and completed Brookdale’s Refresher Course for RN’s/LPN’s.

Our professor “ covered all areas of the profession in a knowledgeable way that gave me the confidence to work.”

Within a week of attending Brookdale’s Healthcare Opportunities Day Job Fair, Susan had an offer from Community Medical Center in Toms River, NJ, where she’s now an ER Nurse and just received the Patient Recognition Award. “My husband and kids were really proud of that. I want to be a good role model. I want them to see that all the work they put into their education can build into doing a job they love.”

40 CENTER FOR CAREER DEVELOPMENT SPRING 2019 n NEW PATHWAYS TO TEACHING Make A Difference And Change Your Life! Become A Teacher! New Pathways To Teaching In New Jersey (NPTNJ) New Pathways to Teaching in New Jersey (NPTNJ) offers an alternate route teacher preparation program for candidates who already possess a Bachelor’s Degree and Certificate of Eligibility. New Pathways to Teaching in New Jersey (NPTNJ) is a partnership between New Jersey City University and many of the New Jersey Community Colleges, including Brookdale Community College. NPTNJ offers an alternate route teacher preparation program designed to provide candidates with the skills and strategies necessary to become excellent, successful teachers. Candidates can take NPTNJ 50 hour Introduction to Teaching Pre-Service course at Brookdale Community College, primarily in a hybrid program. The program provides a process for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree (or higher) to become licensed teachers without having to complete a traditional teacher training program. The NPTNJ program is regulated and approved by the N.J. Department of Education. Candidates will submit all of the appropriate documentation to the N.J. Department of Education demonstrating that the requirements have been met to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (CE) in the content area in which the candidate wishes to teach. The requirements for a CE include: College transcripts indicating a Bachelor’s Degree with a GPA of 3.0 or above; successful Praxis II exam score in the content area in which the candidate will teach; and a successful score on the Core Academic Skills test. The CE will allow the candidate to immediately seek employment as a teacher in a public, private, or parochial school. Candidates must complete the 50 hour Introduction to Teaching course, accept an offer of employment as a teacher,* subsequently enroll in the New Pathway’s additional 350-hour program which will be offered in an online format over two years while the candidate is working as a teacher,* and enroll in the school district’s mentoring program. The N.J. Department of Education will provide the candidates with a provisional teaching certificate while they complete the 400 hour program. *It is preferable to get a job as soon as you can since you will also need to complete two full years in the Provisional Teacher Program in order to apply for your Standard Certificate. For additional information about the New Pathways to Teaching program at Brookdale Community College, please contact Amy Yates at [email protected] or phone 732-224-2158.

Introduction To Teaching: The 50-Hour Pre-Service Course This pre-service course is framed around two critical areas: (1) an overview of and preparation for the skills and tools needed for the teaching profession; and (2) essential attitudes and dispositions needed to maintain poise as novice teachers in diverse communities. The course’s primary intention is to provide a snapshot of teaching. For instance, it addresses concerns related to personal expectations and actualities. Moreover, the course prepares participants to begin their search for a new job. For many, this means understanding what schools are looking for in teachers, recognizing education buzzwords and preparing demonstration lessons. This course is comprised of 50 hours including 30 hours of instruction, 8 hours of classroom observation, and 12 hours of clinical experience. The course will provide the participant with a “clinical” opportunity through structured observations in a school setting. Collaboration with school districts will provide both a window of opportunity for the candidate and a potential recruitment tool for the district. In addition, 12 hours of clinical work such as tutoring or substitute teaching will offer candidates the opportunity to work with students in an authentic environment. Sec 1: Sat, Jan 5-Feb 23, online and face to face Face to face sessions: Sat, Jan 5 (9:30 am-noon), Jan 26 & Feb 23, (9:30-11:30 am) Sec 2: Sat, Mar 2-Apr 20, online and face to face Face to face sessions: Sat, Mar 2 (9:30 am-noon), Mar 23 & Apr 20, (9:30-11:30 am) Fee and Code: $295, XNPTN 004

New Jersey's Career and Technical Education Certificate of Eligibility Educator Preparation Program (CTE CE EPP) provides an opportunity for individuals with diverse educational, training, and employment backgrounds to become Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers. Brookdale Community College is New Jersey's sole-provider of the 400-hour CTE CE EPP. The program is delivered in a hybrid format: most of the coursework is delivered online with the exception of mandatory face-to-face meetings designed as "Cohort Saturdays." The program is a statewide alternate route teacher preparation program specifically designed for CTE candidates who are new to the world of education.

Getting Started The program consists of 7 stages delivered over the course of approximately 2 years. All teacher candidates begin the CTE CE EP Program with Stage I, the 50-Hour Pre-Professional Experience. While candidates do not need a CTE Certificate of Eligibility (CE) or employment to enroll in Stage I, they will need both to advance to the later stages of the program. Stage I introduces candidates to the demands of the teaching profession and is open to anyone who is seeking or has been issued a CTE CE. This first stage provides teacher candidates with an insight into the skills, tools, methods, and strategies necessary for a career in education. Upon successful completion of Stage I, candidates will be provided with information on their next steps. Stage I sessions will be offered throughout the spring.
