Harry Diary Final
Personal Diary 1944 Flying Officer / Navigator James Harrington (Harry) Doe (Born 20 December 1922 – Missing in action 29 July 1944) Introduction The following is a transcript from the 1944 diary of James Harrington (Harry) Doe, a young Flying Officer and Navigator with the Royal Canadian Air Force (#622 Squadron, RAF Mildenhall), whose Lancaster bomber was shot down over eastern France in July 1944. Harry, along with friend and fellow RCAF Flying Officer Harold Sherman (Al) Peabody, was thought to have survived the crash. Harry was my uncle. His older brother, my father Robert Eldon (Bob) Doe, was in Britain at the same time as Harry, serving in the Royal Navy. He and Harry coordinated leave periods to see each whenever possible. Yet, because my dad was reluctant to talk about the loss of his brother, the details of Harry’s life during the war were largely unknown to me. Upon my father’s passing in 2005, I was given a shoe box containing Harry’s effects – including this diary, his address book, two scrapbooks from my grandmother, squadron photos, and his official RCAF log books. Also included were accounts of the crash from the mayor of Petitmont (a town near the crash site), a local forester, and a local catholic priest. Slessor, 1936 ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ Ȃȱ work, Air Power and Armies, the published version of lectures he presented to his army brethren at the Staff College, Camberley in the mid-ŗşřŖǯȱ ȱ Ȃȱ ǰȱ ȱ paper is focused historically on an air effort to defeat an enemy army, or in this case an army groupȯField Marshal ȱȂȱ¢ȱ ȱǰȱȱȱȱ to which Adolf Hitler entrusted his last, desperate gamble to win World War IIȯa campaign that became known in history as the Battle of the Bulge. But in keeping with ȱ ȱ ȱ ȃ ȱ ǰȄȱ t will relate the course and consequences of that campaign to an ongoing doctrinal debate in the American armed forces over a concept known as Effects-Based Operations, or EBO. BEDE’S SCHOOL, BROMHAM ROAD Former St. Bede’s School, Bromham Road, Bedford: Archaeological Trial Trenching Gregson, R Bedford : Albion Archaeology, Report: SB1352 2008, 26pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Albion Archaeology An evaluation at the site of a proposed residential development at the former St. Bede’s School site was undertaken. The site was located within an area of archaeological potential and was nearby to the site of Greyfriars Friary and to the south, a possible medieval moated site. Archaeological features were found in three of the four trial trenches comprising several post holes, pits, linear features and structural remains. All features were dated by artefact or circumstantial evidence to the post-medieval or modern periods. The evidence from the trial trenching suggested that the site of the proposed housing development area contained little or no significant archaeological remains. One of 2,395 B-17Gs built by Douglas. 04 Jul 45 First Flight - 1¼-hour test flight by Douglas test pilot Wally Tower. 05 Jul 45 50-minute test flight by Tower since the previous flight had been less than the statutory 1½ hours. 06 Jul 45 Accepted at factory by USAAF as 44-83868. 08 Jul 45 Departed Long Beach en route to Syracuse Army Air Base, NY, via Chanute Field IL - arrived 09 Jul. 14 Jul 45 Transferred from USAAF supply pool to US Navy as Bu No. 77233. With the advent of the Cadillac II programme (land- based long-range Airborne Early Warning, command and control system) the USAAF set aside 20 brand new Douglas built B-17Gs serialled between 44-83855 and 44-83884, including 44-83868, forming the nucleus of the US Navy radar equipped PB-IW programme as US Navy serials 77225 to 77244.
