UK Chief of the Air Staff Makes Introductory Visit to Singapore 09 Oct 2018 Chief of the Air Staff of the Royal Air Force Air Chief Marshal (ACM) Sir Stephen Hillier reviewing a Guard of Honour at the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF). The Chief of the Air Staff of the Royal Air Force Air Chief Marshal (ACM) Sir Stephen Hillier called on Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen this morning. During their meeting, Dr Ng and ACM Hillier reaffirmed the long-standing bilateral defence relationship and discussed efforts to enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest. This builds on the positive bilateral defence relations following the signing of the UK-Singapore Defence 1 Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (DCMOU) by Dr Ng and UK Secretary of State for Defence Gavin Williamson on the sidelines of the 17th Shangri-La Dialogue in June 2018. The DCMOU captures existing bilateral defence relations and cooperation, as well as provides a foundation for future defence cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Prior to the meeting with Dr Ng, ACM Hillier also called on Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant-General Melvyn Ong and Chief of Air Force Major-General Mervyn Tan, and reviewed a Guard of Honour at the Ministry of Defence. ACM Hillier is on his introductory visit to Singapore from 7 to 9 October 2018. As part of his programme, ACM Hillier visited the Republic of Singapore Air Force's Air Combat Command and Air Power Generation Command at Paya Lebar Air Base (PLAB). He also viewed a static display of the F-15SG at PLAB. -

I go to encounter for the millionth time the reality of experience. — James Joyce, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man In the early 1340s, in Vintry Ward, London— the time and place of Chaucer’s birth— a book went missing. It wasn’t a very important book. Known as a ‘portifory,’ or breviary, it was a small volume containing a variety of excerpted religious texts, such as psalms and prayers, designed to be carried about easily (as the name demonstrates, it was portable).1 It was worth about 20 shillings, the price of two cows, or almost three months’ pay for a carpenter, or half of the ransom of an archer captured by the French.2 The very presence of this book in the home of a mer- chant opens up a window for us on life in the privileged homes of the richer London wards at this time: their inhabitants valued books, ob- jects of beauty, learning, and devotion, and some recognized that books could be utilized as commodities. Sir Mark Sedwill, Acting Cabinet Secretary and National Security Adviser 5 October 2018, Institute for Government The Public Chairs’ Forum welcomed Sir Mark Sedwill, Acting Cabinet Secretary and National Security Adviser to discuss the current priorities within government and to give members the opportunity to raise any issues of relevance to Arms’-Length Bodies. Sir Mark opened the seminar by emphasising how pleased he was to engage with the Forum and passed on best wishes from Sir Jeremy Heywood. EU exit continues to be the priority in Government. Sir Mark explained that there remains a good chance of a deal being secured, and one which is in the interests of the EU both in terms of goods and services as well as global security. Sir Mark acknowledged the parliamentary challenges ahead. Once the Meaningful Vote is passed, Parliament will have to introduce the EU Withdrawal Agreement Bill swiftly to ensure Royal Assent by 29 March 2019; the next six months are likely to be intense. The next challenge will be how the UK negotiates the implementation phase and future relationship. The pages within the ‘political declaration’ document will need to be transposed into lengthy legal text, and the timetable will be further affected by the European elections in June and the appointment of a new Commission, which would not be in place until the autumn 2019. In the event that a deal is not secured, Sir Mark anticipated that Europe and the UK would be able to establish a good relationship against the wider backdrop of global uncertainty. He touched on US/China relations, challenges with Russia and the ongoing terrorist threat. -

Fitted with Merlin XX engine. 19 Mar 44 To No.22 MU RAF Silloth, Cumbria, for storage. 10 Apr 44 To No.1682 BDTF (Bomber Defence Training Flight) RAF Enstone, Oxon carrying the codes UH - This unit was tasked with Fighter affiliation - `bouncing' bombers from local OTU's to train their gunners. LF738 was one of a number of Hurricanes delivered April 44 to replace the units' Curtiss Tomahawk aircraft. 21 Aug 44 No.1682 BDTF Disbanded. 23 Aug 44 To No.22 OTU, RAF Wellesbourne Mountford, Warwickshire. This was a night bomber-training unit and LF738 may have been used for further fighter affiliation work, carrying the unit codes LT - By December 1944 the unit had on strength 6 Hurricanes, including LF738, 54 Wellingtons and two Miles Masters. 01 Jul 45 Final course at No.22 OTU completed and all flying ceased. Unit disbanded 24 Jul 45. 16 Jul 45 Allotted instructional serial 5405M as one of five Hurricanes sent from Wellesbourne to No.12 School of Technical Training at RAF Melksham, Wilts. 6 Sep 54 Allotted to RAF Biggin Hill, Kent. 19 Sep 54 Dedicated by the Bishop of Rochester, together with Spitfire LF16 SL674 at a drumhead Sunday service at Biggin Hill as a permanent memorial and gate guard to St Georges' Chapel of Remembrance - the BoB Chapel at the station, and moved into place in front of the newly completed chapel the following year. -
